How do you let go of bitterness? What's your favorite Christmas/holiday movie?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright wish you a happy festive season with a highly requested holiday episode on Klaus! They talk about the concept of the reframe when Jesper, Klaus, and the townspeople have perspective shifts that bring them to a better place. Jonathan explains why Klaus is a blueprint for how to get out of the misery and loneliness that some experience around the holidays. Alan dives into the technical mastery of Klaus's hand-drawn animation - they invented new technology! And Alan's tears have finally dried up... it's a Christmas miracle?

Hello! Just a little technical clarification. I am the person who supervised the lighting in Klaus and we never used machine learning to do it, it is actually a team of 30 artists who made it by hand with the help of a tracking system from an in-house software. If you are curious to see how it is actually made go check the youtube channel of The SPA Studios, we released bunch of timelapse videos with me voicing over them to explain the process. Thank you and glad lots of you love Klaus ! Merry Christmas !

One small detail that I still like is that, when Jesper's father comes to retrieve him, he notices that his son is looking sad, he sits down in front of him before leaving and inquires what the situation is. His father genuinely cares and is attentive and I like that.
@juliebogen1797
@juliebogen1797 5 месяцев назад
Yeah!! It’s really nice to have confirmation that his dad’s only true concern wasn’t to punish Jesper or get him out of the way, but to push him toward finally achieving some sort of self-actualization (he probably didn’t expect his tactic to be as successful as it ended up being though lol)
@kingskelett6265
@kingskelett6265 5 месяцев назад
@@juliebogen1797 You could say it was a bit of a punishment to go to Smeerensberg, but yeah, he probably expected it to be a humbling defeat. Instead it was a victory and growing experience for Jesper, which is also good. He just didn't expect the way Jesper would develop and how could he, but he didn't seem like he was against it either.

Honestly, I think they missed an opportunity there to have a good reconciliation between the father and the son and to kind of close the emotional arc that was established in the beginning of the movie for Jesper. It was something that they sacrificed in order to have the fake departure followed by the reveal that he stayed behind, but I can't shake the feeling that they could have figured out a way to work that in instead of just having him talk about it after the fact. You lose that emotional anchor.

Yea my gotos since its release are Klaus, Krampus, and The Hogfather. Sometimes Its a Wonderful Life but honestly thats never specific to christmas for me. (And when i was younger got played all year round all the time for me). These three are all new to me and i enjoy both the familiarity of it, and being able to let the details unfold in ways some of my older christmas gotos cant anymore. Its a delight to have that fresh perspective and animation directed at a holiday i have had 33 years of experience with, and only have a nephew to look at it like that.

Alva had initially been planning to leave the town for years, and was generally apathetic about her job, only to change her tune when the illiterate children ask her to help them to write their names. The children go from attending school just to write Klaus for a toy, to attending because they genuinely want to learn.

Honestly, her arc kinda gets me. Here's someone who tried to do the same thing as Jesper, except she came in with genuinely good intentions and it all got beaten out of her by the nature of the island. Then this whiny, stuck-up prick shows up and stumbles his way into success. Except, it's not just success for him. He drives the kids her way, too. It takes a minute, but the kids start to learn. They whet their appetites for knowledge and become driven to seek out more. Jesper's accidental good deed changed her life, so, in return, she shows him the purpose and neighborly love he inspired throughout the whole community, eventually changing his for the better.

My favorite part about this movie is how each detail of todays Christmas is slowly revealed. And overall, i love that theres this relationship between the post and santa. Like a human element, the way parents and older family give kids gifts, and play santa, that even national post offices do this magical thing to maintain this beautiful white lie for children and foster belief. (Where the rising ape meets the falling angel). That theres a necessity for not just children to believe, but the everyday adult. We say the words and step into them. It really feels like a spiritual extension/precursor of the hogfather (then a ball of gas would take the place of the sun, we need to believe the little lies, to believe the big ones- justice, hope, etc). The postman is this go between of the mystical and those who believe, they lend weight to the lie, and in doing so, make it true. Especially in this day and age, they really are the people who deliver the gifts, and its Klaus who gets the credit. Its not a selfless act on their part. They are just trying to do their job. But they deserve proper appreciation, wages, breaks, treatment, all of it, even admidst the christmas season.

I love this movie so much!! My favorite scene is when the kids go to school for the first time and Alva thinks that if she just teaches them one thing they’ll leave her alone, but then they actually get really excited and inspired at the idea of learning more. Modern schooling has turned education into grueling competitive labor, but deep down human beings really are curious creatures with the desire to always want to know more. And that scene is a reminder that learning can be a joyous activity.

What I also love about the montage is that the parents start to do nice things because of the kids. The kids don't see the difference between the two groups and don't understand why they hate each other. And by doing good deeds they show the adults that their near sighted few may be not the right way to live life. We can all learn something from a kids view on this world. Differences may be smaller/less important than we may first seem to think :)

honestly, I think that's what so great about this movie. I was raised Christian but have since left the church, and Christmastime often leaves me sad as a result. This is a genuine question. Why don’t Muslims celebrate Christmas. Jesus is a major figure in Islam to the degree that he’s called the Messiah and is said to be coming back on judgment day much like in Christianity. Even if Muslims don’t believe that he is God incarnate wouldn’t it still make sense to celebrate his birth? Again I’m not trying to start an argument I’m just genuinely curious.

@@thedukeofchutney468 Islam doesn't recognize Jesus as the son of God, because in its view God cannot even have children in the first place, metaphysical or otherwise. Instead, Jesus is recognized and highly respected as a prophet of God who did hugely profound and important things in his life, but that's pretty much it, more or less. Islam also forbids idolatry, so a Muslim celebrating the birth of a man who is supposed to represent The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost (and has been visually depicted with varying degrees of accuracy more times than most people) would probably be looked down upon, to say the least lol.

Well, sort of. There *is* that swirly wind effect, that we're strongly encouraged to think is a hint being given by Klaus's wife's spirit. And then there's the little bit at the ending -- both when it's made clear that Klaus just disapppears, and when Jesper says that once a year, on Christmas, he gets to see his friend. But it's very subtly done, and doesn't overshadow the rest of the film at all, which is nice.

The music in the frog scene always gets me within seconds and I think that's mostly due to its timing: it doesn't properly start when the toy is revealed, because it's not about the toy. Like the boy it's hesitant at first, then it's filled with surprise and amusement and only when the boy actually gives in to the joy of the moment, the music goes big while the camera takes us from the kid to Klaus. The music is not about what a great present the frog is but about how great the kid's joy is and how THAT is the gift that Klaus needed.

At the time, it was mindblowing to me that 2D animation could finally achieve this stage of polish, and I knew that a full film of this would be the start of something amazing. Like being one of the first to see a lightsaber before the creation of Star Wars. I had my eye on the project because Pablos was the animator for Treasure Planet's Dr. Doppler, another film I revere. His character animation style is very recognizable in Jesper.

Klaus is personally my favorite Christmas Movie, and might also be the only Christmas Movie I like. I love the story, of how someone so selfish can bring so much joy, and eventually even enjoy spreading it. How kindness spreads just like hate, and how sometimes all you need is to be kind to make the world a better place. The animation as well is just, top notch. I genuinely didn't know this was 2D until a year or so ago, the shading & lighting is immaculate. And most of all, I appreciate how grounded it feels. It has its moments of magical whimsy, but they're subtle, and could be easily seen as interpretations. The building of the myth, how this wonderful man probably became a Saint, Saint Klaus if you will. The Sami people and their colorful clothes being the origins of his iconic red suit. There's so much I love about this movie, I watch it every Christmas.

Thank you! 🙏 If you are looking for another hidden gem like Klaus, then please have a look at *“Tokyo Godfathers”.* It is another Christmas classic, and one of my top five must-watch movies from Japan (besides everything from Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli). Everyone can watch this movie, it is easy to understand. - However, if you are looking for an expert about Japanese animation who gives you more context, then STEVEM on youtube comes to mind. And if you want some comments with a bit of (dark) British humor about things that are different in Japan, then Chris Broad comes to mind, from the “Abroad in Japan” channel. There is a line that hit me very hard in this movie, when the kids tell the teacher "could you teach us more?" I am a science teacher, during my first job I tried to tell how interesting science could be to 6th grade students, so I told them cool facts about sponge bob or finding nemo, even capitan america and how some seeds can be frozen and then come again to life, one boy looked at me and said "wow teacher, could you teach us more?" and I thought "well, this is my life purpose". When I heard that like in Klaus I almost cried, to be able to put that spark in someone else, gives you a feeling of fullfilment I wish everyone could feel. Such a beautiful movie indeed.

The key to the conveying feelings of a character is not through their mouth, but their eyes. Those subtle shifts in them and the face without speech can make such an impact on the audience. Jesper when he is watching Margu on her boat/sled. He doesn't say anything, he just smiles and his eyes widen and light up, and you can see in that moment he realizes what Klaus saw when he gave the little boy his toy frog. The joy it brought is what mattered, not getting rid of things collecting dust on a shelf. Yes, an underrated gem.

With the families hanging on to the feud, I think there's also something to be said for those elders and family leaders getting power from it. When the battle lines are drawn you get to tell younger kids don't go to these neighborhoods, do go over here, we're at war, you just have to listen to me. They get to treat their families like they're all enlisted into their cause and it makes the patriarchs and matriarchs of these clans very powerful people. If everybody's going to book clubs and chatting politely with their neighbors and nobody's fighting this war then nobody cares about what grandma says about who you should and shouldn't talk to.

This movie was a revelation when I saw it on Netflix at release. I went in expecting nothing, and I got EVERYTHING!!! All christmas feeling aside though, that gets me tearyeyed everyitime I watch this movie, for me there is another aspect to it: as a lover of Mythology, I always love clever, interesting takes on old stories. And Klaus just delivers this on a whole different level. The scene, where the boy wakes up at night, to see Klaus and Jasper's sled "flying" by his window, and his reaction with his friends the day after is just priceless. And is also a very realistic way, in which Legends are born. This movie for me was an instant classic, and I am yet to miss a year rewatching it.

I do love the idea that “a good act done for selfish reasons is still good” because I feel like so many good acts nowadays are dismissed as unworthy because someone did it for clicks, views, to get their name in the paper, to win an award, to get a gift, etc. and while it would be nice for things to be purely unselfish, I guarantee the people benefitting from those positive acts are not complaining about the results.
