Daniel Chu, licensed therapist, reacts to Mike Tyson and his childhood. What we experience in childhood is undoubtedly critical to who we become as an adult. Will we be able to explain this man’s wild life based on what he experienced in his childhood? Of course we will! Enjoy!

@@danielchu While your analysis is spot-on as relates to Tyson, the larger social implications of continuing to broadcast Tyson's particular narrative, replete with its white saviors and horrific black people, so widely is really troubling. I would’ve not been scared to be Mike’s friend in those childhood years. I’ve been friends with a lot of messed up people, who had the same issues he did, though, arguably, they were more malicious. I would’ve just chilled with him at my place, working out and eating some good food on the house, given that he’s a very well articulated and intelligent, I’d have some enlightening conversations with him. There’s a difference between someone who’s evil and someone who needed a friend. Mike is the latter.

@@danielchu I guess I miss the American gene. My Europeen gene has a Q: How the F is it good and badass that he enjoys hurting bad people? In core, he's the same as the bad people, but fighting on the "right" side. You could argue he's worse than many of them, since whoever is in battle is most probably forced, and don't get any joy out of it. They do it for their cause, not out of joy. @redwood1133 I love that you overcame bullying, but getting joy out of hurting people is bad. If it's the case, you've become what you once fought. A typical nerd, who's been bullied his whole life - trains, get dangerous and use it to hurt people. Then says he's fixed. I pray for you!

@redwood1133 there is a defense mechanism called sublimation where you take out your negative feelings in a socially appropriate way. If someone has anger and aggression they play football instead of physically abusing their spouse. It is a good thing to do but as you say they best thing would to n angry at all. You recognize that there is probably an issue but you are on your path and I am hopeful that in time you will be free of it.

another interesting fighter to look into would be sonny liston. the man who partially inspired young foreman and later tyson's persona. a man who came from the very bottom as a child cotton field worker, all the way to heavyweight champion of the world.

When I was young and wrestled heavyweight in university, I used to bar fight and destroy 3 to 5 people in twenty seconds. I had to quit because I was afraid that I would kill someone. I had about 15 to 20 pounds more muscle than Mike and a completely different skill set. I had the same terrible rage in the back of my mind waiting to be let out to play. From wrestling heavyweight in college, I believe I was in as good if not better physical shape than him. We ran hard in the morning finishing ten miles in under an hour occasionally, then lifted for about 1.5 hours and then in the afternoon had wrestling practice. There is nothing more fierce than college wrestling in the early seventies. I had my nose broken seven times hyper-extended joints so many times, broke knuckles, got cut from butting heads, etc. In some big open wrestling tournaments, I had five or six matches in a day. A match is three rounds of three minutes for a total of nine minutes of pushing, pulling, shooting takedowns, etc. After the sixth match in a day, you were slugging down orange juice, gulping unprocessed honey, anything to get a sugar high to compete at such an elite level. At 5 % bodyfat, I used to have a 54 inch chest, 39 inch waist and a thigh circumference of 32 inches. They did a water tank test on me and I tested out at 239 pounds with just under 5.0 % bodyfat. I used to bench press 450 pounds and run ten sub-six minute miles in a row. I think that it would be a matter of avoiding the first couple of Mike's punches and then get your hands on him and take him down. At that point hyper-extend a joint, and he would tap out. He can't beat me with rage, muscle, quickness or fitness. Would be a fun experiment. - The retired accountant

Wow that was very interesting. I would agree Curly that a trained wrestler would take a trained boxer. I'm a big mma fan and right now wrestling is what seems to win fights these days. Curly if you were born later you might have been heavy weight champ with those metrics!!

@@danielchu Regretfully, I have really thin skin and cut easily. Don't worry about my psyche; I am no longer a rage monster. I became a born-again, spirit-filled child of God and follower of Jesus at the age of 23 years old. At that point the Lord God removed the ever-present rage lurking in the back of my mind. I am so mild, calm and placating now, that people frequently assume that I am a weakling. I would only use my talents to get out of a death-threatening event. I am here to be a witness for the Lord. - The born-again child of God, and retired accountant

I get why you're assuming a lot of this stuff given the way Mike is saying it, not really going into too much detail. You should watch the show "Mike" on Hulu. Does a way better job explaining everything. Like the fact that his mom beating him was her way of trying to save him and show him what he's doing was wrong because that's all she knew how to do given Mike was in and out of jail 30ish times by the time he was 13.
@danielchu
@danielchu Год назад
Sounds like it would give me a lot more context. I don't want to demonize his mom. I do believe that she was doing the best she could. There is undoubtedly a generational pattern of abuse and neglect. Thanks for the recommendation and for watching Tristan!

Michael Jordan might be the Greatest in Basketball or in Sports in general of all time… but Mike’s character or personality is better than Jordan no doubt… Jordan as a popular person became somewhat of a di*khead… while Mike is brutally honest… like a Charles Barkley with knockout punching💁🏻‍♀️💯so for me personally i admire Mike Tyson more than i admire Jordan
