In her blue jeans video she meets this man (who is her age at the time), in her born to die video he's the cause of her death, and in this video her memory is haunting him in his older age (she has the same bathing suit on as when she meets him in blue jeans) (the older and younger version of him are both in the west coast video too!)
It's a dark theory but it's just a reference, Because the two songs talk about heartbreak, it's just a theory the songs don't relate like that and talk about other topics.
There's a theory that this older man is actually the same guy from when they were young... but Lana's character "died" and the ghost of her haunts him. I recommend watching the music videos for Blue Jeans, Born To Die and West Coast. They are connected.
This literally makes sense cause she cut off a scene of her drowning like in the blue jeans music video and also the guy is doing the cross sign when he’s seing her swimming
Back at the UV era there was a theory on tumblr that Lana is actually a ghost in this MV. THere was a whole debate about why she died and why she continues to haunt him, one of them being that he was responsible for her death. As I recall, the scene where he sees her swimming and makes the sign of the cross was one of the main points that gave birth to this theory.
One of her best videos is Chemtrails Over The Country Club. I think you'd enjoy that, has a "women who run with the wolves" feel to it. The song is excellent too, finding peace in the mundane with your girl friends. There's a clear distinction between Lana's earlier work (focused a lot on provoking issues, substance/sexual abuse, daddy issues etc.) and her later work... I think a lot of the comments suggest you go explore her earlier work because it has a stronger sound but I think her later work is where you'll fully enjoy and embrace her due to the lyrical content and her insane self-awareness and clever writing.
@@mendwithmere on beautiful which is a song in blue banisters lana says let me run with the wolves let me do what i do you can check it out this song it is really inspiring
The manny bullets "crossing" her holographic image (which looks like a ghost), him making the holy trinity sign/prayer when he sees her swimming (as if he's just seen something supernatural), plus him completely petrified when she gets out of the pool bathed in light really supports that theory
This old man is an American tattoo artist, Lana has another clip with him of the song "West Coast", please review this music video too, it's very good, has many references to a documentary about jazz singer Chet Baker and it's in black and white, a masterpiece. This song is amazing by the way, her voice is sublime! Love your reactions and all your eye rolls hahahah 💙
I believe its part of a story about when she was dating this (here portrayed as) older man. He used to be in West Coast video. West Coast lyrics said "I'm leaving You for the moment, boy blue" and that she "sees him swingin'" what is a metaphor for cheating. So chronically Shades of Cool says how she can't change her gloomy (blue) lover, telling about him dating other women, him being a drug addict. Then we got West Coast where she tells she is actually leaving him for the same actor portrayed in Born to Die and Blue Jeans. I believe she comes back to East Coast and New York because she said she's leaving the older lover "for the music" and in Brooklyn Baby we can hear her singing that she came back to singing jazz with her boyfriend that plays in the band. Then, next song on album is still about being cheated on, and it's Sad Girl. May be meaning that she believed she will be happy leaving him, but she feels like no one can replace him. "His Bonnie on the side makes me a sad sad girl" Then we got Pretty When You Cry, in which she says "All those special times I spent with you, my love" still thinking about how the past lover hurt her and lyrics: Don't say you need me when, You leave and you leave again. I'm stronger than all my men except for you" I believe it's a whole story. In Honeymoon album she seems like trying to heal from this era and this toxic relationship but she is still hurt. That's how I see it at least. You guys can correct me if my interpretation of the plot is wrong
The song is about loving a cool dude . Now we know lots of interesting , cool dudes aint your average pretty boy . It’s an energy . Mark Maloney depicts someone that’s complex been around the block many times, has a stories to tell , wisdom ,kinda like Keith Richard’s . Lana loves the complicated , old soul and will take that over a pretty innocent boy anyday. I. Love how she makes this known in the video and song , she’s not your basic chick .
I believe he's representing an old man who never got over his dead lover & sees her ghost everywhere, thus the drinking & the mournful blue vibe. The last scene, he has to get drunk to still be able to feel her dancing with him for a brief moment until she literally slips through his fingers...
Not, Mere, sitting her roasting Lana's lover for several minutes straight. I'm lmao. But I think you get the type of guy that Lana was attracted too or is attracted too - don't know if its still, yet the description that you grasped is what we know of men that have come through her life. This song I think fits in lot with Lana having both types of "parent holes" and in trying to fix it in lovers while also some point realising that she can't and leaving him (them) which we see in later songs. I want to say that this might be another clear mention of the "Bill" who is the unconfirmed person from Lana's past with whom she was romantically involved, who was also the subject of "Black Beauty" and "Hundred Dollar Bill" along with other a few other songs. Anyways, great interpretation, Mere.
The man is Mark Mahoney, a legendary tattoo artist. He’s also in the West Coast video of Lana’s. I wouldn’t read into it too much. They were just acting out a story, plus some women dig older guys.
I dig older guys. If you know my background, my husband cheated on me with a much younger woman so it has nothing to do with Mark and everything to do with me. Kinda embarrassing now that I’ve healed. He didn’t deserve it.
The lyrics "and when he calls, he calls for me not for you" could also very well be a reference to when she said that same line in her cover of a Nina Simone song titled "the other woman" (from her "ultraviolence" album)
singing "all I wanna do is get high by the beach" for 4 minutes straight is not creative, nor empowering... one of her worst singles ever. super generic and boring.
You've given me happiness. Can you please do Violets For Roses? Then I saw a comment for If You Lie Down With Me... please do them both....pretty please.
i think the bonnie’s blue line is a double entendre because what u said makes sense relating to history which lana has an interest in but also i think she’s just saying she’s one of the many girls (bonnies) that are sad (blue) now because of this man
Can you please do Lana's short movie Tropico (it contains of 3 Lana songs: Body electric, Gods and monsters and finally my favorite Lana's song Bel Air) Also few great unreleased songs: fine china, your girl, kinda outta luck, Pawn shop blues... Thanks in advance🥹💝
Also Because of you Tired of singing the blues Pink champagne ( this is demo version of her COTCC song Let me love you like a woman and honestly I prefer the demo version even though they're both great) 1949 Big eyes (she did this and I can fly for the movie Big eyes) Serial killer She's not me Queen of disaster TV in black and white Hollywood's dead Smarty Yayo
everytime i feel like 'hating' for Lana loving an old men, it also reminds me to her song that said "but you haven't see my man". and i was like ok then🤣
at the risk of coming off ageist, which i am not at all. i totally empathize and relate to your feelings towards these older men that she has in these videos. it definitely makes me uncomfortable and get the ick just from my own personal experiences and feelings. and i have a feeling lana does that purposefully, which i haven’t thought about til now.
June 28th?? My favourite day because ever since I was 5, I've watched Pretty Little Liars and it became my basic need ever since and June 28th was the last day the last episode aired.
You saying that she's a goddess and wanting this old man who really doesn't care about her, it's amazing hahahah it's exactly what I always feel watching it 🫠
I'm late but may i suggest "dark but just a game" for a future react? I think it has a little bit of connection w/ change and the concept of the "candy necklace" mv
It makes me sad that you get so hung up on the men in her videos being old instead or seeing how honest her artistry is and how beautiful this video and ride are
The old dude is mark Mahoney , quite a famous tattoo artist . Love mark Mahoney and Bradley soileau her younger love interest in west coast . Check it out Mere.
@@lakesbarbara8776 I hear you both. I’m really looking at it within myself bc I think if it was a lyric video, I’d probably be able to focus on the artistry. Hearing that this may be about a lover years after her death makes me love it now and feel really bad that I didn’t get past it with the old guy. For context, this past year, my husband, who is older than me, cheated on me with a young woman. It has affected me so much and this is where it’s really showing.
Hi Mere, thanks so much for replying❤ , love your show. I totally understand . Sometimes it’s best if we listen to the music , lyrics and not see the video , totally agree . I’m a massive Lana fan and I have never seen this video until your show , I’ve hardly seen any of her videos to be honest . I recognised Mark from West Coast years ago and was intrigued by this older man and googled him . The visual content can definitely change one’s perception , because it’s a visual concept fed to us that adds yet another layer of interpretation , that sometimes kinda stuffs up .
@@mendwithmere I think that might change the perspective a little bit. Thank you. Love your videos. Sorry if I can’t explain myself very well, english is my L2.
Mere, you've got to react to the West Coast video. I think you would just love the song sonically overall, it's my second favorite song of hers. I think we would love to share that experience with you. 😊 The mobster reference, yes! Tony Soprano has entered the chat hahaha and he always had side chicks while he was married hmmm you may be on to something. And Lana's favorite movie is The Godfather and she's said in interviews that it heavily inspired her early work. So I can certainly see her romanticizing that type of man. Lol the deep "gangly" omg I love it. I think "Cruel World" would also be a fun one for you to analyze too.
I don’t think it’s wrong. It’s triggering for me bc I relate so much and yes, it happens to most women. It’s complex. I explain more in other videos ❤️
You're hot hot, weather in the summer, high high, neglecful lover, hot hot, weather in the summer, high, neglecful lover, you're crumbling sadly, you're sadly crumbling. It's the lyrics of the bridge.
i love when you upload ❤️ can you do some of her unreleased music? like be my daddy, you can be the boss , velvet crowbar , tired of singing the blues , beautiful player , breaking my heart. stuff like that? i’d love to see your take on them
