I was given the opportunity to use 7Artisans first auto focus lens, a 50mm ƒ1.8.... It's quite big.

I made the same assessment. Looked at the Sony FE and it just didnt sound like the bees knees. The 7artisans is a bit big and heavy for what it is but the image quality really is stellar. F1.8 is slightly soft and dreamy which makes amazing portraits. By F2 its ~80% max sharpness in the center. At F2.2 its ~90% as sharp as can be in the center. F2.8 is max center sharpness and by ~F3.2 the entire frame is razer sharp. Probably the single biggest downside is the sensitivity to flares when shooting into direct light or if theres a backlight on your subject. I decided to keep the lens as my only 50mm because of the phenomenal image quality. It's on par with the sony zeiss 50mm that's 4-5x the price except for the flare. A minor thing to look out for

The sony 50mm 1.8 FE is pretty decent when you update the firmware to version 0.3 and you can pick one up for between £100 and £120.

Can't help but think that 7Artisans is planning on using the housing for something else, that size is ridiculous for a 50mm 1.8... it ain't no "nifty fifty". Pictures came out quite nice though.

It’s weird that we expect 50mm f1.8 lenses to be so small. The “nifty fifties” are pretty remarkable for what they offer.

I prefer native lense vs using an adapter

Considered the Samyang 45mm? Got the 35 and 135mm ... great Lenses 🤓

No. I've got a canon 40mm pancake which is less than 1/4 the size, seems to do the job okay for £80 used.

Just got it today and everyone is right about that af/mf switch its so light and clicks just if you tap it , so stupid

I just put a strip of black electrical tape over it. It's a non-issue now. Very odd for it to be so delicate to flip. The lens is wicked sharp and super dreamy at 1.8. Big and heavy but stellar image quality.

@@SenorWhyME right. If I was using it for regular work I'd want something better too. It's a hobby/semi-work lens. The AF is okay, not great. That's probably the most annoying part if I was using it for work.

@@Kabab I used it for 2 weeks it was good but the af/me was really the issue ; plus adding anything on top my lens like tape has affected my work at least on how people see you. I once had electric tape on a old zoom lens so it wouldn’t creep and that had some clients questioning if they would affect my photo quality lol

@@SenorWhyME when I was choosing my wedding photographer, I regularly asked what camera and lenses they use as their primary and with their secondary shooting assistant. Out of maybe 20 photographers, only two shared this information with me. These were people charging well over $30,000 just for pictures for one day and I was willing to pay for the right person. They were insulted that I asked such a question. I was way more insulted that they couldn't answer such a basic question and had zero interest in working with them. I assumed they were going to be using random cameras with basic kit lenses which is why they couldn't answer. The guy I ended up going with happened to prefer the Fuji medium format camera and had an array of antique lenses that he personally rebuilt. As soon as he told me that I was completely sold. Someone that puts that much effort into their equipment is pretty much guaranteed to do a stellar job. Ended up being a husband wife team and they do 6-10 weddings per month at $8-15k per wedding. They did an absolutely stellar job. For a client to care about a bit of tape on your equipment is blasphemy to me. I occasionally do production FPV drone work and I always bring my personal craft that I designed and developed and try the shot with a basic GoPro because the smaller craft flight dynamics are so much better. The DP ends up going with the GoPro shot almost all the time despite it coming from a random home brew setup. Any artwork has little to do with the equipment but the attention and effort that went into the creators equipment tells much of the story of the skill. It's sad that this logical concept is almost completely lost in this random computational photography IG world.
