Everything you need to know about the magnetic compass as a pilot! In this video, I discuss turning errors and acceleration errors caused by magnetic dip. I also explain variation and deviation. This information will help you study for the Private Pilot written exam and the oral exam for your check ride. This training is intended to follow the aeronautical knowledge areas in Part 61.105 section b for single engine aircraft.

Hey pal, absolutely love your videos. Thank you! ... I'm really having trouble understanding what you said, though, about these turning errors. I actually looked in the PHAK and it's seems you've described UNOS backwards. They way I see it; turning to north, the compass lags so you need to do the same in order for it to catch up/so that you don't fly beyond your intended heading. Turning south, again, the compass jumps ahead so you should go past the intended heading to compensate because the compass is way ahead of you. I have a few different sources of material laying in front of me that all seem to be agreeing with what I'm thinking. Unless, I'm truly out to lunch. I appreciate your time, bud.
@flygy481
@flygy481 11 месяцев назад
'If a turn is made to a northerly heading from any direction, the compass indication when approaching north lags behind the turn. Therefore, the rollout of the turn is made before the desired heading is reached' - PHAK
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 11 месяцев назад
Thank you! It looks like I did make a mistake here. All the examples are correct, BUT when I said that the compass will undershoot turns TO the north. That is wrong. It will undershoot turns FROM the north. It will overshoot turns FROM the south. Because of that YOU should Undershoot turns TO the North and Overshoot turns TO the south. I can’t believe I messed that up. Sorry about that. I need to get that fixed as soon as I can

Great video, thank you. The part towards the end of the video discussing magnetic deviation. When working on your flight plan, the Deviation only applies when flying using the magnetic compass correct? It would not apply when calculating the needed magnetic heading to use with an HSI in a glass cockpit, correct?
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining 2 года назад
No problem! It applies when you use the compass and an analog Heading Indicator because you use the magnetic compass to set the HI. Digital HSIs use magnetometers

🚨 3:30 gotto play physics police: it can't be more weight on the left side because the right side is heavier as it is being pulled down more by gravity. However the blue side is likely to have a higher moment of inertia (calculated by integrating mass over distance to the rotation point. This relationship is to the power of three!). Due to the higher moment of inertia the compass can sway more in a turn (moment of inertia is conserved or lost due to friction or conversion to other moment of inertia planes).
@FreePilotTraining
@FreePilotTraining Год назад
Dude, that is the whole premise in dip error. Try reading the Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. I’m not beyond making a mistake, but I didn’t just pull this concept out of my butt. It’s a proven concept that’s been around for years
