Norway doesn't seem to have any problem with charging electric or running them in extreme cold weather In Norway, electric vehicles accounted for 79% of new passenger car registrations in 2022, according to latest data. It's streaks ahead of other nations because Norway waives import duties and car registration taxes for electric vehicles. The country's electricity comes almost exclusively from hydropower, making electric car use in Norway particularly clean.

aluminum ions have a greater energy capacity than sodium, because despite being slightly denser they provide three times more electrons than sodium, aluminum has a greater energy density than sodium and is slightly lower than lithium, but due to its abundance and cost is better.

Na-ion batteries have about half of the li-ion energy density. So it means less range unless you double the battery pack. Not very practical (too much weight) ! Sodium will be a good solution to replace lithium in the Li-O2 batteries. This technology has a very high energy density.

@adr2t
@adr2t 4 месяца назад
@@plasticjock1090 Not fully true - the real goal is just how much power dens do we need to hit before they're "Good enough" is the true line to either cross or not. Its one of hte reasons we're using LFP vs just a raw Li battery. NA still has a few gens to go through just from current research and whats hitting the real world. For example, Solid state, Si and S improvements, and M for NAM. Those improvements alone offer around 4-10x improvement going from 150 -> 600 making it more than enough for todays need and better than current gen batteries. Granted, some of those will also come to Li type batteries as well allowing them to increase more for less Li, but still, its more of a supply issue currently than it is a just raw performance once we hit those power dens. The world will need a lot of batteries lol.

Newer tech for lithium production is in the works. In the next five years the USA will become the largest producer of lithium in the world. Tesla is building a lithium refinery near Corpus Christi Texas. It'll probably go into production in 2024. With their new patent, Tesla will drill lithium wells, similar to an oil well, and the refinery will remove lithium from salt water. The only waste produced is clean water. The governor of Arkansas recently announced that Exxon Mobile will begin drilling lithium wells in southern Arkansas in 2024. This may be a huge boom like the oil boom years in the past. Petroleum isn't going away either. I think the future will be graphene batteries.
@robertkubrick3738
@robertkubrick3738 3 месяца назад
They don't even have to drill Lithium wells, it's already in oil well brine. It's a byproduct. It could be virtually free...because the oil company wouldn't then have to pay someone to truck the brine away and pay to pump it down someone's old dry well.

Finding a non-Li battery for static applications would free up a lot of Li for mobile applications. Here there are some interesting possibilities when weight is no longer an important consideration. There are a couple of ZnBr batteries, a SbCa battery and a whole bunch based on Fe and V. What is great is that they all have characteristics that make them superior to Li batteries if you are no longer concerned with weight. They last far longer than Li batteries, pose no danger of spontaneous ignition, can be shipped fully discharged, are from elements which are readily and cheaply sourced from multiple suppliers. All they need is market share to become less expensive than Li batteries.

The newer lithium iron phosphate batteries don't use cobalt or manganese. The 4680 battery is a lithium iron phosphate battery. Tesla does not import lithium from China. The largest Lithium reserves in the world are 1. Bolivia, 2. Argentina, 3. Chile, 4. USA, 5. Australia, 6. China. You can look it up on the internet. The USA will become the largest producer of Lithium within 3 to 5 years. Tesla has a patent to remove lithium from salt.

Why don't they use a combination of two batteries. Based on the average amount of KM driven in one day. Have the first battery responsible for that. And a secondary batter in the car designed to be trickle charged from home. Then you can get the best of two worlds of battery tech. The first designed for low charge times, and the second designed for the environment. With an idea like this, weight is nigh on irrelevant, but space is the big issue.

Sodium Ion will be half the power of Lithium ion. I think it would work well in the discontinued Nissan Leaf that only had 198 cells to begin with as it would be easy to just double them. I don't think sodium ion would work in a tesla anything unless they introduce a motorcycle. Tesla already crams as many cells as the car will hold into them.
