ABOUT THE WORDS
One of Burns’ Jacobite songs, first published in James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum in 1792.
The Jacobites sought to restore the deposed Stuart dynasty to the Scottish and English throne. 'Jamie' refers to Prince James Edward Stuart (1688-1766), son of the deposed King James VII of Scotland and II of England. It was Jamie who led the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1715, while his son, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) made another attempt with a second Jacobite rebellion in 1745.
It all ended when the Jacobites were defeated at the battle of Culloden in 1746, forcing Bonnie Prince Charlie, like his father, into exile in Europe.
In this song a Jacobite blames the absence of a Stuart monarch on the throne for all the world’s woes, lamenting, “There’ll never be peace, till Jamie comes hame”.
ABOUT THE MUSIC
Long ago, while looking for something else, I came across these words in a book of Burns poems. I was attracted to them but despite searching the library (as we did in pre-Internet days), couldn’t find a tune for it - so I wrote one.
In 2020, I remembered it, altered it slightly, and, despite having found the original tune in the meantime, enjoy singing this setting. I hope you might enjoy this fresh setting of Burns’ wonderful words, too. You’re welcome to sing it.
