Your persistence is amazing. Great video. So glad you got rid of that plastic bottle. Having worked on/raced older cars for many years, two things I go completely new is fuel tank/lines/hoses and brake cylinders/lines/hoses. They both corrode seals inside out. And both are under pressure. (Fuel sloshes around and builds pressure inside the tank).

@@Iliketomakestuff I second the replacing the fuel lines comment.
@jeanchapman1301
@jeanchapman1301 3 года назад
For me, it depends on the condition of the original tank. The quality of the new Chinese replacement tank has never been comparable to the original. Thus, I try to keep the original (with some restoration work) unless it has deteriorated too much.
@Figment078
@Figment078 3 года назад
Same here. It's taken me a lifetime of working on old boats and cars to learn it, but learn it I finally have.... I no longer hesitate to COMPLETELY replace the fuel system in its entirety. OK the steel fuel line on the Ghia is a real pain in the butt to replace, so maybe I'll wait and see how quickly it fouls filters first, but the tank and pump and hoses are just too easy to replace. I know the repop tanks are not as good as the OG were, but they're good enough to be the least-worrisome thing on a 50 year old car.
@VochoTalacha
@VochoTalacha 3 года назад
Recommendation: when the car is done, try as much to not leave kinks, loops and wrap arounds with the hoses. Don't leave long pieces like you did on the tank, because there it can rub with the steering tie rods and leak. Why is that? Well, if you're running the OE fuel pump on your aircooled VW, the fuel must get to the pump by gravity. The pump itself has a very weak suction force. So basically, you want a fuel line that is just as straight to the pump as possible. Even though the tank has a sock tipe filter element (the white thing you put on the tank's outlet) some guys install a fuel filter between the line that exits from the chassis and the engine. Fuel filters there sometimes cause hydraulic traps and keep the fuel from getting to the pump. So if you're installing a fuel filter, the best place is just below the tank. And to minimize the probability of leaks and thus fire hazards, try to run metal line (i.e. 6mm copper tube) from the chassis outlet to the pump at the engine. You can just connect the line coming from the chassis with a small piece of hose, then run the line all the way to the pump with another small piece of hose. Try to do the same for connecting the pump to the carburetor. This makes you to forget about the crappy fuel hoses sold these days that get all cracked and leaky within a couple of months, so if there IS a leak, you will know where is it, and it's cheaper to buy a couple of feet of hose to replace those little pieces than a couple of yards. If you run an electric pump, then you can dismiss what I said about the hoses and filter placement, but definitely go for the metal line
@Neonstacks
@Neonstacks 3 года назад
i've always seen fuel filters installed in the back where the engine is, because they're clear and you can see fuel running to the engine. i may be thinking about a different fuel filter tho

My favorite thing about this channel is the vulnerability shown on every project. It feels realistic and honest. Mistakes are made and the “best” outcomes aren’t always what happens, but we see how you deal with challenges in reality. Not just showing the perfect blemish-free video, but honest process of making something you need. I am digging this car series.

I know we're only a few episodes in but I am loving this series. I like how Bob is a little out of his depth (and openly admitting that), usually his projects are almost pro level quality with laser cutters, a full work shop etc, but for these videos he is like most people, google it, buy a product, read the instructions. Great stuff.

Hey Bob, in the future for paint removal I’d try “klean strip aircraft paint remover.” It’s a thick orange paste that you just brush on and let sit for a few minutes and the paint will crinkle up and nearly fall off, all you have to do is use that putty knife and it would strip it to bare metal in just a few minutes.

Long-time subscriber catching up on some videos I missed while on vacation. I have a Triumph TR6 and did a similar restoration on the gas tank about two years ago. The TR6 also has foam used to reduce noise (in the case of the TR6, large squares that attached to the side). Glad to see I am not the only person who has cut up a anti-fatigue foam pad for use on a gas tank!

Just remember that the American octane numbers are a bit different, they use AKI instead of RON octane numbers. 87 RON is low quality fuel that's not for sale anymore so no need to concern yourself with it. 91 RON is the same octane rating as 87 AKI.
