In our current national and global climate, each individual, organization, and sector plays a vital role in ensuring justice, equity, and inclusion within our communities. It is well known that language and cultural education builds cross-cultural competencies and supports creativity, critical thinking, and global citizenship. With this in mind, the world language classroom is uniquely suited to challenge bias, stereotypes, and nurture student voice and agency.
On August 5, 2020, the CIUS Center welcomed Dr. Cassandra Glynn, Director of the Master of Education in World Language Instruction Program at Concordia College, Amani Core, Chinese Language Instructor at Phillips Academy, and Dr. Yu Jiang, Director of the Confucius Institute at the Xavier University of New Orleans for a virtual panel discussion exploring the role of the language classroom in addressing racial inequality, particularly here in the United States, while also highlighting steps being taken specifically within the Chinese language education community.
