_"In light of numerous legendary stories about disappearing bodies in antiquity, such as the ascensions of Enoch (Gen. 5.24; Heb. 11.5; 1 En. 70.1-3; 3 En. 6.1; 7.1) and Elijah (2 Kgs 2.11-12, 15-18; Josephus, Ant. 9.28), the disappearance of Moses (Josephus, Ant. 4.323-326), the unsuccessful search for the bodies of Job’s children (T. Job 39.8-40.4), the assumptions of Ezra (4 Ezra 14.9, 48 Syr) and Baruch (2 Bar. 76.1-5), and the disappearances of Romulus (Ovid, Metam. 14.805-851; Plutarch, Rom. 27.7-28.3), Aristeas of Proconnesus (Plutarch, Rom. 28.4; Herodotus, Hist. 4.14-15), and Cleomedes of Astypaleia (Plutarch, Rom. 28.4-5; Pausanias, Descr. 6.9.6-9), the possibility that Mark’s account could be a Christian legend cannot be easily dismissed. While many of these stories concern persons from the distant past or legendary figures, the Dialogues of Gregory the Great (540-640) contain an account about Gregory’s contemporary, a Roman craftsman, who died and was buried in the Church of St Januarius the Martyr. Gregory reports that on the first night after the burial the sacristan heard loud shouting from the burial place. When the dead men’s friends opened the grave, they found his clothes untouched but his body disappeared (Dial. 4.56). Pope Gregory assumes the accuracy of this story and even adds that anyone interested to check its veracity could do so, either by speaking with the witnesses or by examining the site of the burial. This is not just a medieval tale that could be simply brushed away. Matthew’s accounts of the resurrected saints who exited their graves and appeared in Jerusalem after Jesus’ resurrection (Mt. 27.52-53) or the guard at Jesus’ tomb (Mt. 27.62-66; 28.4, 11-15) show that early Christians were capable of inventing stories for theological and apologetic purposes."_ - Lidija Novakovic, Resurrection A Guide for the Perplexed, p. 138 _"The seventh argument impresses me as even more formidable. It will give skeptics some assurance. Some will indeed find it all by itself enough to brand Mark 16 and its parallels as probable fiction. Not only have people constructed fables about missing bodies, but the Greek and Roman legends, added together, establish that, before and after the turn of the era, a missing body was a not uncommon topos for gods and heroes in the Mediterranean world. Some of those myths, moreover, appear in the historiographical literature, where they are presented as worthy of belief. This undeniable fact merits much pondering."_ - Dale Allison, The Resurrection of Jesus Apologetics, Polemics, History p. 140 Compare Mark 16:6 "He is not here. See the place where they laid him." And Luke 24:3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. To Gen. 5:24 LXX "And Enoch was well-pleasing to God, and was not found, because God translated him." Hebrews 11:5 "By faith Enoch was taken so that he did not experience death; and “he was not found, because God had taken him.” Philo Questions and Answers on Genesis 1.86 'What is the meaning of the expression, "He was not found because God translated him?" (#Ge 5:24). In the first place, the end of virtuous and holy men is not death but a translation and migration, and an approach to some other place of abode.' A search party is sent for Elijah in 2 Kings 2:16-17 but they do not find him. "And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find him." "This passage from the novel Chaereas and Callirhoe, written by the Greek author Chariton of Aphrodisias sometime in the first half of the first century ce, describes the discovery of an empty tomb and illustrates how such a discovery would be interpreted....But Chaereas does not know Callirhoe is alive, so the religious conclusions he draws from the missing body are very important. In fact, Sjef van Tilborg has recently observed that this 'is a text which prototypically determines how . . . the disappearance of a body from a grave was interpreted religiously.'...The similarities between this story and the empty tomb stories in the canonical Gospels are immediately striking: an early morning visit to the tomb, a stone moved away from the mouth of the tomb, a reaction of fear, a hesitant entry, an unsuccessful search for the body, and a reason given for its absence.... In the Gospels, the reader is led to the conclusion that God has raised Jesus from the dead-led, of course, by Jesus’ own predictions and by the interpretive help of those encountered at the tomb. In Chariton’s novel, the conclusion is “assumption,” the bodily removal of a human being (living or dead) directly into the divine realm, as (or at) the end of that person’s earthly life." - Daniel Smith, Revisiting the Empty Tomb, pg. 47-48 Since there is no verifiable independent witness of the empty tomb (all gospels follow the same basic burial sequence and discovery that derives from the Markan narrative), it's just as likely that the gospels would be employing the theme of the "miraculous missing body" as it is that they are reporting a historical fact. Thus, the story by itself is not sufficient to serve as evidence for its own historicity.

Short highlights why the empty tomb story and surrounding details are probably works of fiction. 1. Most likely there would have been designated graves already prepared for crucifixion victims. The ludicrous scenario that Joseph was somehow in the position of scrambling on Passover for an available burial plot and the only option was to use his own family tomb, is historically implausible and violates practical sense. If crucifixion was a routine occurrence and burial was of the utmost importance then obviously this would have already been thought of and trench graves for crucifixion victims would have been ready to go. The Mishnah even states there were designated graves for criminals so, most likely, Jesus would have ended up in one of these graves since (if the story is true) he was convicted by the Sanhedrin of being a criminal blasphemer. Since Jesus had been "hung on a pole" then he would have been "cursed" (Deut. 21:23). It is unlikely that Joseph would defile his family tomb with the corpse of a cursed criminal blasphemer. Josephus says blasphemers should be buried "dishonorably and secretly." 2. There is an obvious reliance on the Old Testament for the Jesus stories beginning with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem (based on Zechariah), the trial and crucifixion (Psalms). What are the chances that they modeled the burial after Isa. 53:8-9 and have Jesus buried in a rich man's tomb? Gosh, we find exactly that don't we!? 3. Joseph, a rich man, would most likely not have personally taken part in burying Jesus. This grotesque task would have been someone else's job. 4. In Mark it says Joseph "bought" linen. Buying and selling items on a festival day was illegal - Exodus 12:16, Leviticus 23:6-7, Nehemiah 10:31. Notice how the other evangelists omit the part where Joseph "bought" linen. 5. The verb for the "rolling" stone apokulio was used to refer to round disc like objects. The archaeologist Amos Kloner found that rolling stone doors in the time of Jesus were ultra rare, reserved for the mega rich (kings and queens). However, after the year 70 CE, rolling stone doors became much more common so we have a likely anachronism here. It is unlikely that the word apokulio was used to refer to a square blocking stone. 6. The reason for going to the tomb in Mark's story was "to anoint the body." The problem with this is that there would be no reason to go anoint an already dead and buried body so it seems like a contrived plot device created in order for the women to "discover" Jesus' body went missing. Matthew alters the reason to "go see the tomb." John has Jesus correctly anointed *before* burial. 7. The question the women have in Mark _"Who will roll the stone away?"_ makes them look quite silly. Why would they head to the tomb without thinking of this in the first place? Makes very little sense as history but serves to create tension in the narrative which is released when they reach the tomb and find the door already rolled away. 8. The remark that the women are invited by the angel to "see where he was laid" (Mk. 16:6) sounds mundane at first but realize previously at 15:47 we are told specifically that _"they saw where he was laid."_ The redundancy sounds very suspicious as if it's been artificially set up. The author is informing the readers that the women see where he was laid *so they cannot be mistaken* that this was the place where Jesus was and is no longer there. See Adela Yarbro Collins' _Mark: A Commentary_ on this. 9. The description of the tomb and burial evolves more honorable over time as if they're either trying to cover up a dishonorable burial or make it seem like it *really was* empty or both. In Mark it's just a rock hewn tomb. In Matthew it's Joseph's own "new" tomb. In Luke it's a tomb where "no one had ever been laid." In John it's now a "garden tomb" and the burial is accompanied by 75 lbs of myrrh and aloes! 10. The description of Joseph also evolves. In Mark he is a "distinguished member of the council." Matthew omits this and instead calls him a "disciple" of Jesus. Luke says he was a "good and upright man who did not consent to the Sanhedrin's plan and action." John says he was a "secret disciple for fear of the Jews." In the gospel of Peter he's even called a friend of Pilate! His character is so fluid and the evolution of his character is so apparent that we are justified in questioning whether this figure has any basis in historical fact at all. If the story can evolve this much from 70-100 CE then how much did it evolve from 30-70 CE? 11. The location of gJohn's "garden tomb" seems to contradict it being Joseph's "own" tomb as in the synoptics. In gJohn the location was chosen out of haste due to the Sabbath fast approaching. It's unlikely the historical Joseph owned a tomb nearby the gruesome site of crucifixion. In gJohn Mary asks the gardener for the body as if it didn't belong there due to being someone else's property. So it seems we have contradictory locations of where Jesus was buried. 12. There isn't really any independent attestation of the empty tomb since all gospels follow the same burial sequence and discovery from Mark - burial by Joseph, discovery by women, missing body. We know for a fact that Matthew and Luke copied Mark, thus they're not independent and John was written so late that it becomes extremely unlikely that he hadn't ever heard the Markan narrative. 13. Lastly, the original story in Mark just has Jesus' body miraculously disappear without an appearance report since the original ends at 16:8. This is consistent with other "missing body" stories from antiquity that are employed to signal "this person was special" or that "a miracle has occurred." There were other stories of Jewish prophets and Greco-Roman gods/heroes whose bodies go missing so the Jesus story is just par for the course really. In Dale Allison's new book he even concedes this is the most "formidable" objection to the empty tomb. For more reasons see Matti Myllykoski, _'What Happened to the Body of Jesus?'_ in the book Fair Play.

There are some point I don't understand, the Passover was the day before, if the could execute a criminal the could very well buy stuff, so Friday would count as normal day, it's not like modern Jews don't buy stuff for a week. The tomb would had been a temporary tomb to make proper cleaning and burial inside the 24h before translating it to the definitive place. The garden tomb was not the tomb is several centuries earlier than the facts, if it was a tomb it was the one in the holy sepulcher church.

It looks like the writers of the Gospels were having a little fun with the "Empty Tomb" joke. Here's the jist. Mary, in the dark, stumbles upon the just emptied tomb of Lazarus, a parallel tomb, nearby and same linen left behind, because he was just "risen" (actually still dead and taken out and cannibalized, yep, right in the Gospels) and all the visits by the disciples in the book of John are mistaken for "angels" in the other Gospels, so "Jesus" never rose, Mary just went to the wrong tomb, Lazarus's emptied one and mistook it for Jesus'. Line up the Gospels in this order: John, Mathew, Mark and Luke (the position of the sun in the sky from no sun to increasing daylight) and all the disciple visits in John match the "angel" sightings in the above aligned Gospels. It was all meant as a joke to mock the defeated rebels of the 66AD - 73AD Roman-Jewish War for having eaten their Messiah. It's a satirical, logic, math puzzle. Extremely clever. Check out Caesar's Messiah by Joseph Atwill and the chapter The Puzzle of the Empty Tomb and test it for yourself. Atwill rules with this one! Everyone else is spinning their wheels.

Finally someone else who reads into the text that Jesus was cannibalized! It makes so much sense, think about how he taught his disciples that to eat of his flesh and body would grant eternal life. The disciples knew where the body was, and there were enough of them to move whatever door was in the way, and even if they didn't eat him in the end, they expected him to rise from the dead, and would want his body for safekeeping till then.

I find it rather peculiar that the tomb's location has been lost in time, that the early Christians didn't bother recording and passing on the knowledge of its whereabouts, considering how important the resurrection miracle is for the faith in Christ. One would think that the tomb would have been looked upon by the Jesus followers as the most holiest of places. It's almost as if there never really was a tomb to begin with. Or at least nothing out of the ordinary happened there.

Because the Gospels say so! They wouldn't have made it up! People don't ever make things up. It's in all four Gospels so it must be true. People don't just repeat false stories. Most New Testament scholars agree that the empty tomb is historical. Most of them also believe a guy rose from the dead 2000 years ago. NT scholars are very logical and smart. There's nothing legendary about a corpse getting up and leaving it's grave. This is a very realistic story. Jesus actually rising from the dead is much more logical and likely than his resurrection being a made up story like you find in other Greco-Roman texts. (/s in case you couldn't tell)

@@astrol4b The belief that Jesus’ tomb is located at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre dates back to the fourth century. Then, the emperor Constantine - a recent convert to Christianity - ordered his representatives to find Jesus’ tomb. Upon arrival in Jerusalem in 325 A.D, Constantine’s men were directed to a 200-year-old Roman temple built by Hadrian. Beneath, they found a tomb made from a limestone cave, including a shelf or burial bed. This fit the description of Jesus’ tomb in the Bible, convincing them that they’d found his burial site. Yeh! They found a tomb in Jerusalem 300 years after the supposed crucifixion of Jesus that was a cave that had a shelf or burial bed. Wow????? That's got to be it then so the big mystery is solved.

Exposition of the Oracles of the Lord Fragment 6 "Mark having become an interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatever he remembered... for he neither heard the LORD, or accompanied him" "Matthew put together the Oracles... in the Hebrew language" The Muratorian Canon Fragment I "Luke... when Paul had taken with him as one zealous for the law, composed it in his own name, according to belief. Yet he himself had not seen the LORD in the flesh; and therefore, as he was able to ascertain events" "The fourth of the Gospels is that of John, [one] of the disciples. To his fellow disciples and overseers, who had been urging him [to write]." The Jews essentially did what they always did, kill someone for not following commandments. End of story. Beyond that, it's all fiction. All made up by Paul. Paul authored the majority of the NT, trying to convince people that Jesus was the Mosiach, and the Jews somehow got it wrong. The Jews got it right. Mark was the first Gospel written... 40 years after the death of Jesus. The original account in Mark (Codex Sinaiticus) is virtually identical to the account in the Ethiopian NT. Mary went to the tomb, an angel told her that Christ had risen... THE END. The witnesses were added into later versions.. KJV. Then, Mary and the disciples were the only witnesses, AND none of them even recognized "Jesus"... he manifested in a different form. (Mark 16:12). Matthew was written two decades after Mark... Matthew 28:17 when they (11 disciples), they worshipped him: but some doubted. (Mary doesn't see Jesus, in the book of Matthew, just the 11 disciples). Luke was the next gospel after Matthew, then John. The accounts get embellished, as time goes by. Jesus eats ("proof" he physically resurrected, and the disciples didn't see a ghost/spirit), (doubting) Thomas touches his wounds (the gaslighting of the non believers). Paul goes on to say there were 500 witnesses. The resurrection is the foundation of Paul's religion, literally. I Corinthians 15:12-15 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; And if Christ not be raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised the Christ. 15:19 If for this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. Christians are followers of Paul and his gospel. Paul never met Jesus, unless you take his word for his encounters. Paul openly murdered the followers of Christ. He had very little association with the apostles or their teachings. In his own words. Galatians 1:11 But I make known to you, brethren, the gospel that was preached by me, that is not according to man; 1:12 for NEITHER RECEIVED I IT FROM MAN, NOR WAS I TAUGHT IT, BUT THROUGH A REVELATION OF CHRIST. Romans 3:7 for if the truth of God has, THROUGH MY LIE, become more abundant for his glory, why am I still judged as a sinner? 2 Corinthians 12:16... I am crafty, and caught you all by trickery Acts 12:23 and behold the hand of the LORD is upon thee, and thou SHALT BE BLIND, not seeing the sun for a season. YOU WILL KNOW THEM BY THEIR FRUITS. 24:45 For many will come in my name, saying "I am the messiah" and they will lead many astray. 24:23-26 if ANYONE says to you "look, here is the Messiah"... DO NOT BELIEVE IT.... For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear, producing great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the very elect. Take note, I have told you beforehand. So if they say to you "look here, he is in the wilderness" do not go out. If they say "look, he is in the inner rooms, DO NOT BELIEVE IT. John 16:10 I go to my father, and ye see me NO MORE. 16:28 I leave the world, and go to the father. 17:4 I have finished the work, which thou gavest me to do. 14:19 a little while, and the world seeth me NO MORE 18:36 My kingdom is not of this world 14:2 I go to prepare a place for you) Acts 9:3 suddenly there shined... a light from heaven 9:5 I am Jesus, whom thou prosecutest 9:9 and he was three days without sight. Acts 23:11 the LORD stood by him and said "Be of good cheer, Paul: as thou hast testified of me... And if you beLIEve Paul's encounter with Jesus, you have to subscribe to 'Jesus' causing Paul to go blind... the guy who healed blind people, and taught people to love their enemies, and turn the other cheek. Acts 20:9 and a young man... who sat in a window... as Paul discoursed...fell down from the third story, and was taken up dead🤔 20:10 but Paul went down, and fell upon him and embracing him said: be not troubled; for his life is in him. 20:12 and they brought the young man alive.(WOW, a convenient "accidental" death, and resurrection "miracle" at the hands of Paul) (Ye shall know them by their fruit) Acts 18:12-18 Paul's false teachings get questioned in a Synagogue, the gentiles (Greek), that accompany Paul, beat up the head of the Synagogue. Acts 22:3... being a zealot for God, as all of you are this day, Acts 22:24 I persecuted this way even to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women Acts 20:26 I solemnly affirm to you this day that I am clean from the blood of all. 1 Corinthians 9:20 I became to the Jews as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews, to those under law as under law, NOT BEING MYSELF UNDER LAW, that I might gain these under law. 9:21 to those without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain those without law. 9:22 to the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak: TO ALL I BECAME ALL THINGS, THAT BY ALL MEANS, I might save some. 20:23 AND ALL THINGS I DO FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL. Romans 3:7 for if the "truth" of God has, THROUGH MY LIE, become more abundant for his glory, why am I still judged a sinner? 2 Corinthians 12:16 NEVERTHELESS, I AM CRAFTY, AND CAUGHT YOU ALL BY TRICKERY. The guy is admittedly a murderer, liar, deceiver, telling people what they want to hear, causing harm to others, clean of the blood of any wrong doing, while preaching to everyone that are going to reap what they sow. Claiming his gospel is inspired by God, and not by those who were personally with Christ on a daily basis. PAUL'S GOSPEL CANNIBALISM FOR IMMORTALITY John 6:53 Jesus said.. Except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day. 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. CHILD SACRIFICE FOR IMMORTALITY John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Romans 3:25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of the blood-to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness. People are kinda funny. When a loved one dies they'll stand before the body and say, "He/She" is in a better place. Then later the body is buried, laid to rest. They don't expect any empty tomb or empty coffin and yet if you raise questions about Jesus's tomb and body they'll get quite upset, demanding an empty tomb. If the loved one's tomb doesn't have to be empty for the loved one to survive death, why does Jesus's tomb have to be empty for him to survive death?

Because their entire religion is centered around Jesus being unique. If Jesus is just like everyone else, they have nothing. Their religion could not exist. Thus, yarns are spun and get more spurious with each retelling, just like all the other mythological tales humans have created throughout history. It is through his super-naturalness that his deification can occur. It is rather a circular argument, but Christians are known to use every fallacy in the book to support their predetermined conclusions. That is why Christianity has a heavy reliance on gullible people usually indoctrinated at very young ages while they do not have fully developed cognitive abilities.

It's all about your relationships with The Creator and with other people. If those two things are out of kilter, you have some corrections to make on yourself. As for the Virgin Birth and baptism and the empty tomb.....no big deal.

@@grantsmythe8625 First, you have to show that there is a creator to have a relationship with before you can posit that you can have a relationship with it. Relationships require at least two parties. Where is the 2nd party in this relationship? People can delude themselves into believing they have an all powerful friend in the sky, but that does not make it true and it does not necessarily improve their lives, either. Delusions can actually be quite detrimental to human life and to human cognitive development. So, do you have a way to determine the distinction between this creator you are positing and a delusion? Is there a way for you to demonstrate that this creator actually exists? I understand the social club aspects of Christianity and how people can form valuable relationships with each other through it, but at the same time, I also see some of the negative consequences that come about from this belief system. Additionally, there are other ways to socialize and form relationships with people without all of the religious dogma and zeal and the in-group out-group connotations that come along with religion in general.

"First you have to......" Hombre, I don't have to do Jack Shytte. We're nothing but mammals that speak, read and write and make music. Like other mammals, we eat, we drink, we urinate, we defecate. We are nothing. When I hear a human being pompously pontificating about theism or atheism......and when I look at the recent photos from the James Webb telescope, i just laugh at us humans, especially those who think they know something, those who strut and brag about "critical thinking". They're like birds debating the existence of air: mindless. chatter.

Couldn't agree with Crossan's observations about the world more. Totally agree. But I have no idea what that has to do with the bible or religion or resurrection. You can read your own observations into any religious text in the world. Or any great poetry or literature. We humans are creative like that, and we're pattern seeking animals.

I'm glad Neal asked that question about how we get a message to churches - to the people that need to hear it. I realize you and Neal are doing your part of spreading a message and Crossan is as well, but this is still a question I worry and wonder about. If there's this number of us (minority? Majority?) Who are really trying to live good lives that allow others to do the same and trying to respect our world, we're in the species being lumped in with the rest. But if that 'rest' doesn't have empathy or respect for us or the planet they aren't inclined to change. I fear some days they have even engineered society so that people trying to be decent can't succeed and will die out. (Sorry I'm just a little stressed in my life right now. Didn't intend to get dark. Very grateful for videos like this.)

Consider how brutal life used to be. Plenty of ways to die young, or old. Extreme poverty. Wars and raids. Illnesses and hardly any medical care. Famine.Superstition. We have it easy now compared to even 100 years ago. But we have so much information messing us up, making us worry about thing we cant influence. Follow the advice of the stoics and focus on what you can control, your mind! Acceptance of everything, finding peace within. Read Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. All free online.

Most people aren't dyed in the wool ideologues. A lot of people pick up and hold really shitty positions because that's what the culture around them provides. As social creatures, we have a tendency towards going along with the group. But for the most part people aren't the apologists, or the fundamentalists, or anything of that sort. They have a worldview which is more of a loose patchwork of ideas they cobbled together haphazardly rather than anything coherent or strident. If you want to change people's minds, you need to be able to talk to them in a way which allows them to see the contradictions in some of their stated views. "Allows them to see" is doing a lot more work here than it might seem. There really is a right way and a wrong way to approach these kinds of conversations. If you go around telling people that their worldview is flimsy and riddled with contradiction, you're never going to get anywhere. It's all about asking questions and guiding the conversation "naturally" towards those conflicting ideas. As to empathy. Even psychopaths have empathy. For them the switch is just in the off position by default. But they can learn to turn it on. For neurotypical people, empathy is more like a muscle. You develop it through your experiences and learning. Some people are raised by people with weak, flabby empathy and thus develop their own weak empathetic tendencies. But this too can be addressed through the right kinds of conversations. Leading people to recognize themselves in the position of others. We have an innate tendency towards some conception of "fairness". When you can show how a persons ideas or actions are unfair and would be harmful if directed at themselves were their situation different, you can help other people begin to workout their weak empathy. The caveat to all of this is that it takes time and active effort. Sometimes it involves talking to people with calmness and respect whom you'd really rather just punch in the face. The only chance we have of wiping out caring, empathetic people is if the entire species is wiped out. We have a natural drive towards valuing society. It's just that culture has ways of creating pitfalls which reinforce trauma, which pushes people away from valuing society. I get that things have been dark for a long time and that the prospects for even darker days loom ahead. But that never stopped us in the past. If it had, you wouldn't be here to even consider these ideas. It wasn't too long ago that we didn't even have toilets. Something like covid would've wiped out even more people than it already has. We are improving. Slowly, painfully and sometimes some people try really hard to stop that forward momentum. But as long as you keep pushing ahead and show others why they should too, eventually we can get to a place where the people who want to tear everything down are few and far between.

Even in the 2nd century, when Hegesippus wrote his story about the martyrdom of James the Just, there is no mention of the resurrection. All James was asked about was "Is Jesus the Christ", and James answers "Why ask ye me concerning Jesus the Son of man? He Himself sitteth in heaven, at the right hand of the Great Power, and shall come on the clouds of heaven." Jesus is in heaven, but James/Hegesippus does not say Jesus was resurrected in his body leaving an empty tomb. I suspect Hegesippus hadn't heard Mark's story of the empty tomb.

The Resurrection story was "created, then "evolved" over the years. An interesting man and humorously verbose, as all Irishmen should be. But ultimately, his acceptance or rejection of specific parts of the Jesus story based on technical or linguistic criteria are only that, interesting. People either believe in the divinity of Jesus and are Christian or they don't. I think Jesus was probably just another itinerant Jewish preacher and that Saul/Paul invented a religion based, very loosely, around a man he never met. All the miracle tales were later additions to make Jesus appear more than a man. There are so many holes and contradictions in the gospels that it is necessary to be a believer before they can be accepted.

There were nay-sayers even at the time Jesus arose. Pilate put 100 soldiers at the entrance of the tomb, and they knew for sure which one it was - the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. Pilate wanted to make sure Jesus was still dead because he didn't have enough soldiers to stave off an insurrection. But the next morning, the head centurion reported to Pilate that a strange light appeared in the early morning before dawn, coming out of the tomb; and Jesus was gone. Pilate then informed Tiberias.

After introducing his Jesus character to his reader as the long awaited Messiah/Christ of Hebrew lore, the author of Mark goes out of his way to avoid providing reputable witnesses to support his claim. The genuine historical figure Mark uses to serve as harbinger to the Messiah's coming, regarding himself unworthy even of loosening his sandals, somehow fails to recognize him in Jesus at his baptism. It is Jesus alone who hears the voice from heaven "You are my beloved son . . ." and sees the Spirit descending in the form of a dove. (It should be noted here that Mark does not claim that there was an heavenly voice but that his Jesus heard one.). Madmen and demons immediately recognized him as the "Holy One of God" while his brothers and sisters who grew up with him remain clueless. It seems only fitting, then, that the author should continue his obfuscations to the end of his tale by providing his reader with only a third hand account of Jesus' expected resurrection: a total stranger in an empty tomb to three women who run off, passing it on to no one else. Despite including posthumous appearances and multiple witnesses in their own telling of the tale, subsequent evangelists evidently found the empty tomb venue too useful a literary device not to employ it themselves - each to his own conceit.

Magicians use props to do a disappearing act, to make money and get attention. In the real world people do this too. John Darwin used a canoe and a secret passage. Travis Walton used a fire tower and a spotlight. In the Jesus story, the tomb and the shroud are simply just magician’s props.

Per Mythicism, there was at least an empty ... grave ... of some kind, per Paul's very early statement in Philippians that Christ had suffered, been crucified, died ... was buried ... then raised back up. However, Paul is not thinking of the Gospels' empty tomb with a rolled-away stone discovered by a band of grieving women. For Paul, the emptiness of Jesus's celestial tomb. He never cites Mark's discovery of an empty tomb at the outskirts of Jerusalem, never mentions Pilate, Joseph of Arimathea, sleeping Roman guards, and earthquake, a race to the site between Peter and the Beloved Disciple, etc. For Paul, the emptiness of Jesus's ... grave ... in the lower heavens was just one step in a process of incarnation, persecution, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection undergone by Christ. Paul never uses Christ's empty grave-site as a token of proof of Jesus's resurrection. It is the later Gospels that attempt to enlist multiple witnesses of an empty tomb as "evidence" that God had raised up Jesus.

Or maybe Paul was making a reference to a burial in a criminal's pit, which is what the audience woukd exoect for a crucifixion victim. "Buried" doesn't have to mean in a tomb.

very interesting but I think this explanation is one of the material explanations. It does not include the spiritual aspect of existence. So, I think Rudolf Steiner who took both sides of existence, where the material side is the manifestation of the Spirit, has a more broadly, more realistic, and more inclusive and understandable explanation..

@Jesus Christ Is Lord Allah is fictional. Do you learn? Dear Muslims, please learn the origins of the fictional Abrahamic god. It all goes back to the fictional Canaanite god El. Also, keep in mind that the Israelites were worshipping this fictional god centuries before Islam came along. *El, Yahweh, or Jehovah* Christianity and Islam originated in the Middle East. Any Christian in this area when asked about the Name of God, he will say Allah! The English Bible starts with: "In the beginning God created the heaven and Earth." And the Arabic Bible starts with: "In the beginning Allah created the heaven and Earth." The western Christians are unaware of the Name of God of their eastern brothers. Some Christians think that Allah is the idol that the Islamic cult worships! The Office for the Non-Christian Affairs at the Vatican published a document under the title "Orientations for a Dialogue between Christians and Muslims. It is a very important document in that it shows the new position adopted towards Islam. In the third edition of this study (1970), the document stresses this fundamental point in the following terms: "It would seem pointless to maintain that Allah is not real God, as do certain people in the west!" The Conciliatory document has put the above assertion in its proper place. There is no better way of illustrating Islamic faith in God than by quoting the following extracts from Lumen Gentium, produced by the second Vatican Council (1962-1965): "The Muslims profess the faith of Abraham and worship with us the sole merciful God, who is the future judge of men on the Day of Reckoning." Google *"His Name is Allah, History of Truth"* (The fictional Canaanite god El that the Israelite patriarchs worshipped, later conflated with Yahweh, is the same fictional god of the Muslims) Watch Dr Christine Hayes who lectures on the Hebrew Bible at Yale University. Well . . . I tell this to my own subs in videos regarding apologists including Craig, Strobel and the rest. Here is the problem with the witnessed resurrection and empty tomb and the apologist. First and Christ in a go cart they need to stop with this constant "witnessed" resurrection. We have no texts prior to Mark which was at best 30 years after Yeshua died. We have no idea who wrote all the gospels. And they also keep pointing to the Holy Sepulchre as "the tomb of Christ"-----we don't know that, have any evidence of that--at all. It's a theory of an empty tomb established by Eusebius and the bishop of jerusalem with Constantine's mother who declared this the tomb of Christ. It is not archeological fact. What these apologists do is take something and try to twist and mold it as evidence when it is not. Cheers, DCF

The problem with most modern interpretations is they don't realize figure of speech and symbolic language is heavily involved in biblical and especially New Testament narratives. Resurrection also can mean symbolically going from one stage to another, death of the old self and rebirth of a new self, title or position. And in the case of the Jesus narratives it's heavily political. In the Codex Sinaiticus the oldest version of these stories Jesus of Nazareth before the crowd with Jesus Barabbas [Bar Abba "Son of the Father"] is an interesting focal point. Yes there are 2 Jesus characters in the Codex Sinaiticus which makes one question what does this really imply? Later versions dropped the name Jesus from Barabbas. From my point of view that was deliberately done to conceal the truth. What this scene is really implying before the crowd Pilate asks if this 1 man "Jesus of Nazareth" is a regular guy? Or if he is "Jesus Bar Abba" Son of the Father... they chose him as "Bar Abba". So they officiated him as King of the Jews and "Priest in the line of Melkizedek". Which now the Melkizedek priesthood was reestablished after the Maccabee revolt violently ousted them and installed the Hasmoneans who brought in the Pharisee priests which were foreigners and fraudulent. That is the entire point of the New Testament, which is absolutely against Pharisee and Sadducee religion, and to bring back the bread and wine oriented rites of Jerusalem, and stop the animal sacrifices which were not originally part of the Melkizedek religion, and reestablish a descendent of David and Solomon as king... and they did. Which the Pharisee and Sadducee sects have been at war covertly since because of it. Original Christianity did not accept the common Torah books nor it's animal sacrifice religion. The crucifixion narratives are ancient Mystery Rites of Kingship, and Jesus went through them. They were translated a certain way to appeal to sacrifice obsessed separatist racists so they can evolve and unite peacefully with others in the empire. The spiritual Christ-Logos [logia, logic, divine intelligence] "went up to heaven" figuratively because it's a supernatural being and concept and that is where it's from. The physical Jesus went on to be king literally. Jesus Christ is most likely a title, and the original person in the narratives had a different name. It's from here and this understanding where you get Islamic and other traditions that Jesus didn't literally die on a cross, or that he had children and descendants with royal families from him. Christianity or certain powers that be watered down and altered the details and meaning of these things, and with time people forgot the truth. To be "crucified" can also mean go through a trying time or difficult situation. People still use these terms as figures of speech, especially when dealing with authorities: "They tried to crucify me" or "They crucified him" etc. Cross in Greek is "Stauros" which also means "Star". And "Stau Ros" means "Red Star". So to put one "On a Star" or "Make Him a Star" is basically saying they're exalting him in status. Even "Putting over his head INRI" is saying they're giving him legal responsibility of Judea. These are figures of speech and symbolic language. The original 7 Stations of the Cross is a rite reenacting the ceremony of officiating Jesus. Yes there is a spiritual component to it because the spiritual Jesus-Yeshua [God's Salvation that Jews originally worshipped] goes through heaven, hell and the underworld is a very ancient understanding and tradition. Modern Judaism was invented from around 1100-1200 CE and did not exist prior the way it is now. Before Pharisees were just a separatist Adonis/Dionysian type barbecue cult favoring it's members and racist beliefs politically, that used in their own slanted ways the typical ancient stories, allegories histories and creation epic common to all in the mid-east, the levant and Mesopotamia. Essenes, Nazarenes and Sadducees were for Roman rule, Pharisees were not. So that is the key to making sense of all this. Christianity IS NOT an extension of Pharisee Judaism. Christianity is the original religion that existed in one form or another since the dawn of civilization with Assur, Asar, Ishu, Yeshua in Sumer, Armenia, Assyria and Europe, and then brought into Egypt by Moses. The Burning Bush "EHIE ASHR EHIE". Tradition has it that Jesus is the Burning Bush. EHIH is a vowel chant variation like JHWH is and used in many forms especially in Kabala, and common to many nations. ASHR is the actual name which is a variation of ASSUR in Assyria, and ASAR in Egypt which is the original way of spelling Osiris [Greek]. The bible directly tells you when translated correctly who the real God is.

You did not do your homework There was an empty Family Burial Monument: The Herod Monument, near to where was build the King David Hotel. That site became owned in AD 70 by Flavius Josephus in exchange for his family estate. Until then it had become Roman property seized as tetrach Archelaus, oldest son of Herod the Great, got expelled. Next time, prior to a planned interview, ask me to suggest some real questions. There was an empty, still unoccupied tomb monument, ONLY ONE, that alone and exclusively covered all necessary qualities. Now look at Vita 75-76: the story of a crucifixion survivor there in that text, in AD70, provided the details to fill in the vague hanging metaphor used by Paul, to refer to Acts 5 verdict by Sanhedrin of purest messiah doctrine as an ideal methodological management model concept to run society (solve problems, calm storms/debates, heal sick organisations etc), developed as the Supreme (Nazarene) Essene doctrine by Simon Cephas within Essenism, that became outlawed as heathen / pagan heresy instead of within hebreanic system. Hanging was then the perfect Deuteronomy derived metaphor to escape prosecution, as contribution by Paul to the Nazorenes. A doctrinal methodology (what the ideal Essene would do) was outlawed by Sanhedrin, in Acts 5. Paul replaced that by the application of same methodological framework onto itself to define the ideal teaching methodology. Only Spinoza fetched this properly. All have been lured into the trap recipe, that the methodology prescribed onto itself as the teaching wrapper formulas. If Spinoza could connect the basic dots several centuries ago, how on earth is it possible the envelope he opened was never push to open wider. All theologians, doctors and professors should be ashamed for their failures to let the gospels do the talking, provided by ears equiped to hear.

aBrahamic logic , Moses/Jesus/Mohammed believing. (Judaism Christianity Islam) is based on messiah hero worship. They constantly over hype their 'son of god ' to market themselves as they are Godless... Brahmic logic ,SELF believing (Sanaathan Dharma, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism) is based on Cosmic laws, Nature laws/worship, knowledge gathering, defining divinity as symbolism thru images, Stone dietes..etc Worshipping Nature's forces, elements, animals birds plants is a core part of Faith....combined with individual Self consciousness, self inquiry , self realization.

But they weren't eye- witnesses were they? The gospels were anonymous and do not even CLAIM to be written by eye- witnesses. Do some more research.
@henryschmit3340
@henryschmit3340 2 года назад
@@keithsmith3678 It's obvious that they are eyewitness accounts. Just saying "anonymous" means nothing, since they were obviously written by someone - and It's the message that is important not who wrote it. And that the Gospels "do not even CLAIM to be written by eyewitnesses" is an just argument from silence I.e., the obvious doesn't need to be stated to make it true. "Do some research". Translation: only listen to and believe what Bible hating atheists and critics say. No thanks. There are far better sources of information than the ones you might be referring to. "Do some research" yourself.

There was an empty tomb coz jewish priests had not a corpse to show, and they use some pagan romans to say that the disciples stole the corpse in silence (very ridiculous). So of course there was an empty tomb. In XXI you can not fill the tomb with a corpse hahaha.

This was a huge disappointment, not least because I love Crossan. The question that Derek asked was about the “empty tomb” and whether there even was such a thing. In the 20 minute answer/discussion, it would have been nice if Crossan would have been steered to talked about the empty tomb story and its invention by Mark, especially vis’a’vis the body of Jesus rotting away on the cross as carrion meal for crows and vultures and dogs, maybe with the scraps eventually taken down and tossed onto a smoldering trash heap somewhere, or tossed into a shallow (maybe with a handful of lime, if lucky) and along with the remains of the two brigands or bandits (not “thieves”). Wow…what a missed opportunity. Especially since James Tabor believes the tradition of an “empty tomb” may have a historical kernel or basis.

God so loved the world..... If the world hates you, it hated me before you. And John's epistles talk about hating the world. Kind of funny juxtapositions

We all have God and Satan within us in our DNA we just have to know the right path to take. If you listen to the devil on your shoulder then your feeding the evil within you. That’s why we should only feed the God within us by following Jesus’s example ❤️ Mother God Sophia is the feminine side of God and Christ returns is a female the begotten daughter Zion. When Elohim (Gods) made the universe he and she (wisdom the spirit that hoovered above the waters) created earth. This almighty God does not take human form and incorporates both gender traits, so it’s not father god. Then they made man and woman in THEIR image. Man wanted power and rejected the cornerstones (women) Elohim wanted us as equals not a patristical power. So what the churches hide this from you because they want power and money and control over people. There’s a male and female trinity. We as humans are supposed to emulate the merging of the two to unit soul and spirit and balance❤️the father god of the bible with his negative traits such as lying murdering punishing jealous vengeful god that instills fear is a lower demigod that thinks he is the highest of all but he is the blind god Samael aka Yaldabaoth aka Satan. True One is all loving patient kind and forgiving omnipresent God.🦄
