He would need to convince three psychiatrists that he was no longer a risk to society in order to be released, which would never ever happen, given the nature of his crimes. If he continued to be dangerously violent in said secure mental hospital, he would be a candidate for psychosurgery, and likely would have received a psychosurgery, the modern equivalent of a lobotomy, to protect the staff & other patients. [ They still have to do this if a patient's violence can not be controlled by medication, as they can't humanly keep patients restrained 24-7. The surgery involved smaller portions of the frontal lobes in increments, so the patients don't end up like poor Rosalyn Kennedy did.] Instead, this violently mental man will likely end up being kept in solitary confinement for the rest of his life, with brief periods of him being transferred into the general prison until he maims or kills other prisoners, and then placed back in solitary again. With nothing being learned on how to prevent another horrible tragedy by the next Mr. Alemary...

I once saw a documentary about a bank robbery during which the robber wanted to take a young woman with him after he got the money from the teller. She said no even when he threatened her with a gun. She sat on the floor and said, "I don't care, I am not going with you." He finally gave up and left. We could actually see it happen because there was footage of it through the bank's security cameras. When the reporter showed the footage to an FBI expert on kidnapping, he said that is exactly what you should do, do NOT ever get in a car with a kidnapper because chances are you will be badly harmed if not ki!!ed.

Oh, one more point, if someone is trying to kidnap you, yell FIRE, FIRE because sometimes when people hear "help", they think it is a family dispute etc. But, people will pay attention to fire because it might affect them.

Silent grainy video footage is not usually known to be a good indicator of whether someone is mentally ill or not

Most of them do. Even 'psychotic' people most attack women, children, frail old people, people they know they can overpower. They rarely ever attack large, fit young men who can beat them senseless. They know what they are doing and certainly if they can plan and evade, they know what's right and wrong and that's the basis of prosecuting them normally. If you know what you did was wrong, you're culpable. This guy was worthless, shame he was allowed to grow up that way, but the end product was disposable, about as much worth as a paper cup, in the end. Mental issues aren't a card you can play for sympathy and benefits endlessly. In the end, if you're worthless to society and become a menace to people who are useful to society, society will dispose of you.

yep and again and again and again....no telling how many people he'd already badly attacked, injured, threatened and scared crapless in his life. I'm sure if we saw his lifelong records we'd all be very angry that he was still on the streets back then, to hurt 3 more people in that 1 day; because I guarantee you he'd been arrested, charged with so many other crimes & should've already been behind bars. But our penal code, the justice system's sentences are so inadequate even when they're found guilty of assault, with or without a deadly weapon. Even when a criminal has done their BEST to MURDER a person, if the person manages to escape before their attacker finishes killing them, the system treats it like a victim was smacked once. A guy held a deer knife ( big long sharp knife) on my hroat when I was 15 yrs. old, he beat the he%%out of me, bite mark scars are still on my cheeks from that nut, my face slammed down into the gravel road as he tackled me from behind about 20 times all cause he was determined to ra%e me & this went on for over SIX hours! He was crazy blacked out on moonshine (I found out later). Finally, thank God, he passed out & I escaped. He got 2 years suspended sentence, which meant that he had to serve NO jail time (aside from the 5 days he'd spent in the county jail right after he was found there & arrested) as long as he didn't get arrested for 2 years ! They caught him pants down, passed out, weapon there, the stolen car he'd abducted me in there too, saw my bloody face, body, the deep bites & 3 people had seen him steal the car I was in the back seat of, they saw him abduct me....still that was his punishment for scarring me for life when he dang near DID kill me, easily could've.. .... do you see why the violence does not stop?

U know what this just happened to me a day ago some guy was having a mental problem and started cursing at me then rushed on me luckily another shopper saw him and the cashier called the cops right in front of him but thank God I WILL ALWAYS GET SOMEONE ELSE'S ATTENTION R.I.P.AMY

*His primary goal was killing them.* The fact he got money from one was just a bonus for him. The first victim he just hit in the face, dragged her into a parking lot and then started choking her. The second victim he fought with for 15 minutes before she convinced him that she could get him money, then he killed her anyways. Then just a couple hours later he went after a third victim, stabbing her for no reason, other than he wanted to kill her. Nobody truly knows why, but his goal that day was to kill young women (that were all similar age and build to his girlfriend who he was arguing with)

I can't believe shorty did not run when she went in to the ATM walked out and a pedestrian walk right by her. I know a girl that jumped out of a car going 40 miles per hour because she was afraid.

Please do check on her when you think of it, just let her know that you care and hate what she's been through & that she should call you if ever she needs you, to walk her to her car or she gets caught out with a flat tire etc. I've been through like trauma & it helps just to know others do care & to havesomeone for help if I need it, if I get scared of noises or something.

@@ekbanks One thing I've noticed from a lot of stories is that fear is debilitating to a majority of victims who are being held under duress, or who have been attacked - particularly if they have not experienced extreme violence before. It's a normal human reaction to a substantial and very real threat to life. She would have been on a kind of terrified auto-pilot, and just hoping for the best outcome.

She knew what she was doing as she remembered her PIN number and walked easily without stumbling etc to the banks. She was obviously terrified of the man and too scared to run, which is understandable .

Head injuries aren’t always visible in a person’s gait or in their ability to recall old/rote info such as bank PINs. Making a plan, remembering it, and executing it are all functions which can be affected when other functions are not impaired at all. Also, the video in which Amy is walking is very brief and tells us nothing about how stable she FELT on her feet. Our observations and her experience are possibly two drastically different things.

As someone who has lived through an ex breaking into my apartment and attacking me it's _vastly_ different to live through something like that in real time compared to just watching it in a calm environment after the fact. My head injury and fear impacted by ability to think on the fly, but it didn't impact my ability to remember names/numbers etc. (those are vastly different avenues of thought). No sense putting intention behind what she did or didn't do when she's no longer here to refute it, I don't think that's fair to her.

Even with the risk of it being misread it's probably always worth repeating on the off chance that it sticks in someone's mind and maybe even helps them survive. While you can never know for sure (in the moment) whether you just happen to be dealing with someone who would be more or less likely to harm you if you comply, I have always heard that overall your best chance at survival is to fight/run/never let someone take you to a secondary location (or somewhere isolated). That said, as someone who has twice been in a situation where I had to agonize over choices like that (with a violent ex rather than a stranger though) I know how difficult it is to think clearly in the midst of that level of terror and violence. That's why thinking of her going over that exact thing in the midst of what she was going through is so heartbreaking. The level of cruelty he put her through is unfathomable.

Absolutely. I had to pause the video and just sit there for a moment. When I saw her on the CCTV my heart broke. She must of been so utterly froze with fear she couldn't even run. Ive never wanted to give someone a hug so much. 😢❤

Its crazy, the fact she had the chance to escape multiple times makes me cringe. It reminds me of another story of a mother and father with two kids, someone on the run breaks into the house and holds them hostage. The woman was sent on multiple trips and was allowed to take one of her children even. She decided she would not try and escape even though she was sent to firstly the shop, then a different time to the post office. Cut the story short they all ended up perishing, it is common knowledge that you have to do everything to escape so their is something phycological going on like stockholm syndrome.

He probably lied that he was apart of a gang that even if he is not around they will come after her if she does not cooperate. Some people can be so self sacrificing for friend or family. I honestly think she thought she was keeping him away and became task oriented. She was trying to finish whatever it was he wanted so she could just go home but that never happened…

I saw the episode on the ID channel and they did an incredible job. One thing left out was one of the girl's who was attacked (not the one in the video) was a very, very strong young lady that laid into him on the witness stand. She embarrassed the a-hole.

Many crime programs covered this. I like to watch them due to content. We often hear tidbits others may not mention.

Before he turned eighteen he should have been indefinitely committed to a secure mental hospital. Granted most people in his situation who go off their medications only harm themselves, but in his case there would have been many signs that he was violently aggressive. A kinder & more effective society would have placed him in a secure mental hospital to study why he became so violent, what should have happened to prevent this tragedy, and also used interviews with him to train forensic psychiatrists in law enforcement. He would need to convince three psychiatrists that he was no longer a risk to society in order to be released, which would never ever happen, given the nature of his crimes. If he continued to be dangerously violent in said secure mental hospital, he would be a candidate for psychosurgery, and likely would have received a psychosurgery, the modern equivalent of a lobotomy, to protect the staff & other patients. [ They still have to do this if a patient's violence can not be controlled by medication, as they can't humanly keep patients restrained 24-7. The surgery involved smaller portions of the frontal lobes in increments, so the patients don't end up like poor Rosalyn Kennedy did.] Instead, this violently mental man will likely end up being kept in solitary confinement for the rest of his life, with brief periods of him being transferred into the general prison until he maims or kills other prisoners, and then placed back in solitary again. With nothing being learned on how to prevent another horrible tragedy by the next Mr. Alemary...

I'm from Boston and this case was all over the news, as it should be b/c a crime this bad hadn't happened since the 50's when the Boston strangler was killing women. One thing Mike left out was that the Death penalty was an option, despite Mass. not having the Death Penalty. But, his mother got on the witness stand and broke down in tears talking about how this POS came from a broken home, etc. Apparently, the jurors felt it was too harsh to put a needle in his arm in 20 years and have him gone from the world. Instead, he gets to live, and Amy will forever be 24. Life can be cruel.

A lot of people live double lives, and it's extremely difficult to accept a family member who you thought you knew, could do this.

Sure we doubt our family could be monsters, but can't you tell between relatives who are decent, and those who aren't? I have family that I love but know not to trust, or at least recognize the sleaziness. How are people do blind to it?

Yea it sucks because you think if you do what they say they’ll let you go , but that isn’t always the case. I’ve been carjacked before by an ex friend and you do kind of freeze and not want to do anything fast incase they hurt you . But in this case he already had hurt her so I’m not sure why she didn’t get that boost of adrenaline to boost it but idk .

I am very familiar with this case b/c I'm from the same area. I can't understand why she didn't run, or flag someone down b/c it happened in busy downtown Boston and not some rural area. I guess she was scared and he probably convinced her that he only wanted money.

She also looked pretty dumb when she was getting back in the car from that atm on the busy street

Did you know that the SSRI drug class does not only fail to do what it claims, but that a lack of serotonin is believed to not even be the cause of depression? Not saying je was prescribed SSRIs, but to pretend we even know enough about the brain to confidently take drugs designed to screw up the chemistry might not always be such a great idea. Especially since side effects of this drug class include suicidal (yes, what most patients are trying to prevent by consuming these) and homicidal ideations.

And it is one of the MOST prescribed drug classes. Completely useless. Zero medical indication. Crazy.

Not all mentally ill people kill agree the meds are not a panacea.

@@readilium3432 I know way more about this then you will ever know. I had a family member just like him and the medications were tossed out by my family member as well. People think they know how well they do or don't work but, this guy had no issues while he was under watch by the state. As soon as he aged out and made his own choices he tossed his meds and look what he does. Depression was the most minor thing in the long list of issues he has wrong with him. Clearly I'm not a doctor but I'm going to say from personal experience and 17yrs in Healthcare that he's bipolar, manic depressive, dissacositative disorder, paranoia, schizophrenic, ptsd and a few others in the mix. He made the choice to knowingly throw out meds that were working when taken properly and instead self medicated, the worst choice ever! Most often it's a mix of alcohol, weed or other street drugs and once in awhile they toss in the actual meds they should be taking but without alcohol and that turns into a violent mess. I have many scars to prove it! What's often written up about the medication reactions in patients is from the perfect reacting ones (99 of 100 in the program) and use the negative of (1 person left that the meds didn't work all that great with)... I've been in a few of the study programs for experimental chemo meds and I saw how it was decided. If this guy would had stayed on the meds I don't think he would have hurt anyone, or killed anyone.

This is why I wish we learnt more about fear responses because some people just freeze or go along with their attacker's demands (friend/fawn) in the hopes of surviving that way. As someone who's been in the friend/fawn response before, it's just as confusing for us. Our brain just shuts off and we just do as we're told. If we just knew more about that we'd have more compassion for each other and themselves

I dont think its meant as victim blaming, but as trying to understand what happened within this crime; if theres something to learn, some way to stop it from happening again. If we dont try to find answers, understand and discuss them, the crime doesnt bring any good in its wake. Im sure even Amy wouldnt want that.

Teach her a few sign language signs! Look up videos here on YT, learn the alphabet and "help me". Then you/she could fingerspell the person's name or any other relevant information along with "help" into the camera. Also in a position where the man doesn't have a gun, I would just try to run away into that traffic screaming like a crazy person the first chance I got! Seeing all those cars drive by right behind Amy at the ATMs broke my heart. I also saw a show once where the victim spit all over the backseat she was tied up in to leave her DNA everywhere. I hate that we're even having this conversation, it's extremely sad that as women we have to actively think about this shit and plan for it, but I guess it's never bad to be prepared for the worst this world could have to offer

@@deadendqueen5886 my daughter is 14 and like myself into true crime, we’ve already since she was young had very open discussions and I’ve always taught her about how to get away safely from bad situations, use safe words when texting or phoning me , how to leave as much dna as possible plus other clues. I’ve taught her secret hand signals already but to just mouth words as clues to a cash machine only occurred to me watching this. Someone watching can see sign language being used but from behind they can’t see the mouthing of words for lip reading. This case was beyond heartbreaking, she was obviously so scared it left her frozen and compliant hoping she could get out of it by following his rules. God bless her family

I understand what you want to say, but in a situation like this it probably would be more helpful to stay in the room where the ATM is located. You know there is a camera, so if the perp comes after you, it'll all be on video. There's at least a 50 : 50 chance that the perp will leave you alone and not enter the room to avoid being caught on video. You also could combine the two strategies: mouth as much information to the camera as possible and then stay in the room afterwards. Perhaps it would help if every ATM had some kind of "get help!"-button. Connected to the nearest police and only usable after you identified yourself by inserting your card, so it couldn't be missused for prank calls. In Amy's this could have worked. She had the chance to run multiple times .. he wouldn't have come after her with others around. You allow a violent man to move you around, he will eventually move you to the killing site and end you. They aren't normal, they don't look at you as a human with rights or feelings, they just want to see your fear and get hard on it, take your stuff and likely see killing you as an extra fun thrill or as necessary because you can identify them later. Never ever cooperate with violent men and allow them to transport you around with some promise to release you later. They won't. Amy was smart enough to bargain him into letting her live once .. it's a shame she was likely so terrified that she didn't use the opportunity the moron gave her to escape into a place with people around, yell and make a fuss and call the police.

It's tragic. You must never, under any circumstances leave with someone to another location. You might as well fight or die where you are because stats show you get killed, or worse if you head to secondary location. That's where the bad stuff begins. Look into it. It's true.....
