I've used HY-510 for years on multiple CPUs (R9-3900X, R7-5700X and R7-5800X3D), directly on an APU die (A8-3500M) and directly on a GPU die (RX 580 2048SP). The stuff just works and it's DIRT CHEAP. I just bought 300g of it for less than $25CAD. Tom's Hardware did a huge test of thermal pastes and the difference between what could be called "the best" and what could be called "the worst" was a paltry 7.2°C across 85 different pastes from 33°C to 40.2°C after 2 hours of running the Prime95 CPU torture test. This means that, for gaming, you can use anything because gaming isn't nearly as hard on a CPU as an all-core torture test like Prime95. Unless you're some extreme competitive overclocker, buying expensive thermal paste is about as smart and as useful as using a 36mm AIO on a 65W CPU for gaming (not in the least).

You're using fingers to spread a thermal compound.... Bruh!
@infinitestars394
@infinitestars394 2 года назад
Uhm, that's actually pretty common. It doesn't matter if you spread it with your fingers or with a scrap, as long as you washed your hands before. The most important part is to actually spread it over the whole CPU, and don't use too much. If you just put a dot on it, or a X, there is no guarantee it will flatten out 100%. And if you use too much, it will spill over, and thats not optimal. So, always spread it over the whole CPU ;)

@rubenmartin7759
@rubenmartin7759 Год назад
In most laptops the best you can do is try to find any aftermarket software or bios that allow you to modify fan speed curve. A cheap thermal paste is the same as toothpaste as you seen here, but you could try a top end one, polishing the heatsink, set fan speed faster with FanControl or just try to undervolt your cpu if possible maybe aftermarket bios to change voltage and fan speed curve. They cut down a lot of bios settings on laptops. Other thing that could work is lower down the mhz on boost mode, if boost to 3 for 2 seconds but goes down to 2.5 cause thermals is better to have a fix 2.7 stable boost, you know. Lot of work but you save your pc profile in Google Drive and you could format the pc and put your settings easy. But laptop manufacturers run a little hot most of the time, but if mhz and voltage gets down cause thermal protection you could improve settings for avoid it and even if you don't get faster your lower fps could improve a lot. Mosty if throttle serverly and sadly very expensive laptops do. Enjoy gaming!

@TheGreenMarksman

this is a test of thermal paste effectiveness to transfer heat not how hot will this cpu get. room temp is irrelevant so long as it is consistent.
@athrunzala5337
@athrunzala5337 Год назад
@@TheGreenMarksman nope . . the surrounding temperature directly affects CPUs . . your environment plays an essential role in either helping your cpu cooler or add to its agony between seasons (winter and summer) . . materials that transfer heat may also be affected just like what happens in your car radiator when using anti-freeze vs using water
@TheGreenMarksman
@TheGreenMarksman Год назад
@@athrunzala5337 Antifreeze is to prevent water from becoming ice not to help with thermal conductivity. I'm sure theoretically your right but at the ranges that thermal paste is applicable it's not going to matter. If you can find one test where 1 paste beats another just by changing ambient temps I would like to see.
@athrunzala5337
@athrunzala5337 Год назад
@@TheGreenMarksman Ambient temp differs greatly between winter and summer seasons. This might affect the thermal compound, the CPU and the cooler's behavior. I stated the ambient temp as an additional factor to the equation and not the only factor. Seeing how these elements chemically behave between seasons might be the reason you might choose a dedicated thermal compound over toothpaste or vice-versa. I used the anti-freeze vs water comparison is a car radiator to prove my theory and not to compare a car anti-freeze to CPU thermal paste ;-) . . Last;y anti-freeze isn't for winter only . . it also plays a role during a hot summer too.
@TheGreenMarksman
@TheGreenMarksman Год назад
@@athrunzala5337 I get what you are saying that's why i said theoretically yes it does matter but practically it doesn't matter. I would be more worried about toothpaste drying out as it is water based.(honestly didn't think anyone would seriously use toothpaste) it matters with water/antifreeze because they are trying to keep it in the liquid phase. preventing freezing in low temps and boiling at high. most CPU's thermal throttle at 100c so maybe you could get water based toothpaste to boil but if your producing that much heat you would want to use more efficient T. paste anyway. Therefore ambient temp is practically irrelevant.

Acording to the experiment: Toothpaste it's better than nothing, but also equals to "Cheap" thermal, however "expensive" it's just 10% better than Toothpaste/Cheap... provinding toothpaste and cheap thermal cost about same price (TP = USD$12/3pc = ~USD3.9) and the specific brand of "expensive" Thermal Paste is around $14.90 (~350% more), seems like a "no-brainer" to go cheap.. but no, cheap thermal will defeat toothpaste in maintenance requirement frecuency, and expensive will defeat cheap. So, in this use case seems “Cheaper” tends to come with a lower price and a higher cost.
@faisal3398
@faisal3398 2 года назад
That's a flawed way of thinking, degrees cannot be thought of as a percentage because it is not an absolute number, it's a representation of energy. So 6 degrees is not 10%, it is only 6 degrees and you interpret it as 6 degrees and never as a percentage. You should know 6°C is a massive temperature difference especially considering that it's only by applying a paste. People spend hundreds of dollars on liquid cooler over of air coolers for a couple of degrees difference. So yes, the price is 100% worth no matter what you're setup is IF you want to maximize cooling.
@AvroBellow
@AvroBellow 2 года назад
This test doesn't say that at all. This test says "It doesn't matter". Cheap thermal paste doesn't last a shorter amount of time than expensive stuff. Where did you come up with that bullshit, a Kryonaut marketing brochure? I've been building PCs since before CPUs needed coolers and sure, back in the day, when coolers were new, you wanted the expensive stuff because the cheap stuff really was terrible but that hasn't been true for well over 10 years now. Our tech is so advanced that you can't save much money in production costs by making a vastly inferior product so nobody bothers trying. Even "the worst" CPU paste, according to Tom's Hardware is only 6.5C hotter than using Kryonaut. That 6.5C won't do a thing to make a difference, it is a negligable difference at best.

@KillFrenzy96
@KillFrenzy96 2 года назад
6 degrees is not "10%". You do not compare it to freezing temperatures. The baseline should be the ambient temperature. If it was 20 degrees in his room, then it's more like a 15% improvement. Of course, this does not consider the cooler's ability to dissapate the heat as well, and other variables unaccounted for.
@imperialguardsman3556
@imperialguardsman3556 2 года назад
@@faisal3398 that's some "fuck the poor" type of bullshit. 6-10 degrees won't change much as well as water cooling isn't worth it's money. Just slap 200watt air cooler on your 95-125watt cpu, apply 5-10$ paste and that's it. You'll never be bothered by the cpu temp.

Oils and skin cells plus whatever dirt is on your finger mixes with the thermal paste and it will sooner or later degrade it's performance. 2- This test is useless if he didn't do multiple heat cycles before running his tests. 3- This test also says nothing for longevity.
