In this Physics video lecture in Hindi for class 11 we explained thermal stress and strain due to temperature change. We also derived the formula for thermal stress. During the derivation of the equation for thermal stress we found that it is the product of Young's modulus of the material, the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of the material and the change in temperature. If a bar is fixed rigidly at both ends and the temperature is increased, due to the increment in temperature the bar tends to expand. But as it is fixed rigidly the walls do not allow it to expand. That means, the walls exert stress on the bar. That stress is known as the thermal stress of that bar due to the change in temperature.
To find out the thermal stress we used two formulas, one, the formula for coefficient of linear expansion and, two, The Hooke's law which is stress is proportional to strain, in this case, longitudinal stress is proportional to the longitudinal strain.
