Tip: I’ve found deflating the Xlite and Xtherm slightly significantly reduces the noise. Not sure why. Helps make those pads more comfortable and noise more bearable. It will likely reduce the R value slightly though. Having used all these pads (Tensor pre-2022, Tensor 2022, Xlite and Xtherm), got to agree the comfort and noise is much better on Tensor. The new 2022 is absolutely warmer than previous gen, and also agree it’s now a wash between it and Xlite. I’m concerned about the durability of thinner material on the Tensor, so I’m only reserving them for use on shorter trips.

Thanks Justin for the great comparison of the NEMO and Thermarest sleeping pads. I'm a side and light sleeper so I bought the NEMO Tensor Insulated Regular Wide pad and am extremely happy with it. I also noticed in your video that the Thermarest had a lot less surface area and for a side sleeper, that's a deal breaker. I have nothing against Thermarest because I slept on a self-inflating Thermarest for 20 years! I just sold it to get the NEMO Tensor and couldn't be more satisfied.

Neither of these two worked for me. I'm so glad I went to REI and tried out these any many more. In the end, the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Topo Luxe Sleeping Pad was way better. Maybe it's because i'm 205lb and 6'3, but these pads left me touching the ground in some spots. The NeoAir Topo is super confortable and only slightly bigger. Served me well ont he Inca Trail recently.

Great review / comparison. I too have used both and the Nemo is the most comfortable. That said, my Nemo developed a slow leak which I could not find to patch,. Nemo warranty and customer support was great, they sent me a replacement pad that was a new improved model. Tip: Put a light weight fleece blanket between the pad and tent floor to reduce noise.

Lifetime warranties are useless when the companies fail to honor them. I had a tensor fail five times with small leaks at the baffle welds(a know issue) so I reached out to Nemo asking why this was happening. Customer services response was that the leaks must be punctures and therefore would not be covered under warranty, end of conversation. I have since switched to a neoair xtherm after an amazing email conversation with Thermarest in which their CS team was able to address my concerns about delamination issues and provided me with a wealth of information on best practices when using air pads.

Sleeping pads are a lot like shoes...there’s a lot of subjectivity when it comes to comfort. I have both (2021 models). I find the Xlite is more comfortable than the Tensor. Also I’ve only ever had one pad get a hole in it (so far, knock on wood) and that was my Tensor. My Xlite is also pretty quiet. I use a Flextail Gear Mini Pump as my inflator. It only weighs about 1 ounce (about 28 grams) more than the pumpsack. Love the channel!

I ditched my very comfortable Tensor in favor of the X-lite. Unfortunately, I found the polyester material that the Tensor is made of to be extremely noisy against my Big Agnes tent floor - creaking and groaning with every movement. I inflate the X-Lite on the firm (but not too firm) side to help mitigate the infamous crinkly noise, which also decreased somewhat over time and with use. I agree that the Tensor is more comfortable, but it was so noisy I couldn’t stand it.
@Keillan5480
@Keillan5480 2 года назад
I'd definitely want to see a noise comparison of the pads when moving around in a tent. The previous generation of the Copper Spur HV UL (orange without the awning door) makes these pads both sound like a squeaking balloon against the tent floor whenever moving around. I've found this noise to be MUCH worse than the crinkly sound of the pads. I've been hunting for a quieter combination. Wondering if the current generation of the Big Agnes tents is quieter, when they updated in 2020 they claimed to be using a different fabric so maybe it's better now.

I choose the NEMO mainly because it's significantly less noisy then the Thermarest. My main complaint is that it requires being folded in 3ds length wise before rolling up to fit in the stuff sack, which is difficult to do in a small tent when it's raining.
@HuskyMike

Tried the X-Lite and couldn't deal with the noise. Sounded like I was sleeping on a bag of chips, while crunching corn nuts, all while floating on a lake full of coke and pop rocks.... but noisier. 😉

I haven't used either... I've had a Big Agnes Q-core Deluxe for a few years now. 4.5 R value...3.5" thick..soft material on the top of the pad... And I think it's super comfy! I get the long, wide, version since I'm 6' 215 lbs and love to sleep on my stomach. It's not the lightest pad...900+ grams (34 oz)... But it's worth every extra oz as I've never...ever... Complained about my sleep in the back country Oh, and it doesn't make noise!

I went with the Sea to Summit Ether Lite XT Insulated. It's more durable (30D and 40D nylon), has a lifetime warranty compared to Exped, has very strong valves compared to Thermarest, is very thick (10cm) and comfortable and still packs small (official packing size length can be reduced by over an inch with a little hack: cutting the internal separation band of the pouch and inverting the inflation bag). Moreover, it doesn't make me hungry by not sounding like a bag of Doritos. Yes, it only has R3.2 but in cold weather where I absolutely need warmth I'd never trust any air pad - so I always bring a foam pad for safety. That way I can still use the S2S sans foam pad in warmer seasons without sleeping too hot.
@Backpacksandtrails

We recently bought the S2S Ether Lite XT insulated pads and love them. We were thinking about buying a warmer pad for an up coming trip this late fall where temps could be in the low 20's. We do own a couple of the Decathalon Forclaz M100, Foam pads and we were wondering with that extra 1.2 R value if that would be enough.
@TheCarmacon
@TheCarmacon 2 года назад
@@Backpacksandtrails Before I got the S2S Ether Lite XT Insulated I used an Exped SIM Lite 3.8 self inflating mat with R3.2 (identical to the S2S). With the additional Forclaz/Decathlon folding pad (Thermarest clone) underneath the Exped I slept cozy warm at -10°C (using an Apex 200 g/m² quilt and wearing solely the merino base layer). Used a tarp overhead and a groundsheet unter the pads. You could also add reflective material.

slept on an xlite NXT and hated it. arm fell asleep multiple times. and that was just during a 4 hour at-home test. looking at the heavier Helix from REI, crappy weight penalty at +10 ounces in exchange for a 4.9 r-value (xlite NXT is 4.5) and WAY more comfort.

The Big Agnes Rapide SL seems like it could be a contender at this pricepoint as well. I don't have any experience with the Tensor or Xlite so I can't make any comparative statements, but the Rapide has been very quiet and comfortable for me thus far. Will be interested to see what people with more experience than myself think about its durability and whether the listed R value is accurate.

@@JustinOutdoors Thanks for the insight! I'll be cautious and bring extra layers as I get a feel for what the Rapide is capable of. Hey first time commenter! Love the videos man. For the Nemo Tensor, is it the orange insulated version that you're talking about that has the R value of 4.2 for 2022? Or the yellow standard version? (Been looking at the REI/Backcountry sales) And if I'm in between 6'1" / 6'2", would you recommend the long wide? Or just stick with the reg wide and deal with the less inch or two? Thanks!
@FrenchLeprechaun99
@FrenchLeprechaun99 2 года назад
Hey the new 2022 one is still yellow, the nemo tensor alpine is orange with a higher R value. (Personally) I’d suggest the long wide 2022 tensor or the long wide neo air xlite. Especially if you plan on sleeping in colder temps, I’d bite the bullet and take the extra weight for the few extra inches in length & not to mention feet off the pad (for me at least, feels weird). Hope this helps!

I also have the tensor insulated pad (prior to 2022). It sleeps quite cold with a 20 or 0 degree quilt. Under 50 degrees at night means I have cold spots under me. What change was made in 2022? For some videos, I will have a specific sponsor for that video (e.g., Garage Grown Gear). But I always disclose in the video whether it is sponsored or not. I don't receive any money from companies for showcasing their gear or reviewing. My approach right now is to not accept sponsorships from any companies whose gear I review - so no sponsorships from companies like Nemo or Thermarest.

Anecdotally, I've owned the last gen and loved it, and bought the newer generation for the upgraded R value. It's survived years of bikepacking, moto camping, backpacking, and dinghy camping without issue. You can't really compare pads that have a weight difference of 1lb+, they're for different purposes. For me, I camp down to about 25deg F, and it's been wonderful. Nobody shopping for a 3 season pad is going to compare it to a 7.8r value heavyweight
