I live in Japan (which apparently makes me a unicorn), and the housing size data for Japan is definitely wrong. I looked up the data in Japanese because English language information about Japan is often a bit off, and the average housing size here is and it's 92.5 square meters (a little less than 1000 square feet). My guess is that the data you found may have only included stand-alone houses and not apartments and other housing.

Back in high school we had international students come all the time and in my grade 10 year we welcomed a Mexican student into the friend group and kept up with him after he went back... until military conscription. Apparently it's a lottery system whether or not you get conscripted (or was at the time, mid 2000s) and his name was drawn. I looked up his mother on Facebook a couple of years ago and found photos of him in uniform. He stuck with it, made it his career, and rose up through the ranks. I'm proud of him but also sad because he was writing fantasy novels (got top student for English for his grade level the year he was with us in a school of 2,000+ students) and wanted to be a doctor.

Vienna is its own state in Austria. In general I encounteted many mistakes in these maps. Austria and Switzerland have mandatory conscription. Cuba wasn't coloured for Spanish and so on

I feel that the language spheres map is largely wrong. English is an official or co-official language in many countries that are grey on the map (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Gambia, Philippines, India, Pakistan, Papua-New Guinea)

México is strange when talking about mandatory militar service. The law says that it is actually mandatory in a time between 52 Saturdays or something like that, but doing it isn't really necessary. Years ago you had to do it to get your passport, visa, drivers license, etc, but recent laws have erradicate this kind of "must-have documents to get this other document", and as far as I know doing military service is only useful to get a work in gubernamental jobs, as lawyer, senator or others like that. So yeah, mandatory militar service here in Mexico isn't really useful as I've heard. Sorry for poor grammar if the case

The map with English and Spanish, if French was to be added there would be a lot more countries and it would really show how important these 3 languages are for travelling.

I am from 🇧🇷 and I dont know a single person who can explain why Brazil has a mandatory military service.. we're pretty peacefull and there are enough people tha WANT to get in the military that they don't have to do this (because of the nice salaries)

As an American, I’ve noticed (both just online and visiting other countries) that American houses (primarily suburban and rural, but also urban in a way) are also just designed to look and feel more open on the interior, which might be one of the reasons house sizes are larger than average than other countries (also of course it’s the largest country in the world in terms of livable land area, as a huge portion of Russia’s size is Siberia and China the plateau and frontiers) as houses and neighborhoods are designed to accommodate the standard of open space. Also p.s., love your southern accent

Conscription is very different in each country. In some countries conscripts are randomly chosen, in some it applies to you only if you are 18 and do not work or study, universal conscription is pretty rare at this point. As for the autonomous cities, they also work very differently from country to country and this isn't shown in the map. In Spain you could say that Madrid has its own State being that its province became also a Comunidad Autónoma, but it includes the surrounding areas. Both Arg. and the USA are marked in the map but theiy work quite differently. In Argentina the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) used to be the Capital Federal (similar to the DC) so the National State had a lot of say in its municipal affairs and the election of its authorities. In the 90's this federalised territory also made its own constitution and branches of government adquiring a similar status to the rest of the provinces but as an Autonomous City (similar to what Washington DC asks for when they say the want to become a State). Germany works quite differently since many of its cities became Bundesländer due to historical reasons. In short, as I am sure many of you know, some maps misslead more than they illustrate without telling a single lie.

i love your channel because even though i am not interested in geography at all, one of my favroite past times is to just go on google maps and look at random things which is exactly what you do except u actually answer the questions that the map brings up

It was very interesting to see the different size of houses. I remember when I was a kid I grew up in a 1500 square foot house and that was considered small here in the US but whenever my German grandmother would come over she would be like “wow you guys have such a large house!” We later moved into a 2500 square foot home and it’s just average sized here.

Do remember though that "mandatory conscription" can mean many different things and take many different forms in the various countries that are marked as having it. As an example, no one has been conscripted to the danish military involuntarily since 2010, and this is then not even replaced with anything, like you see in other places where civil service is an alternative (which it can also be in Denmark). But the point it that currently the system in Denmark works in such a way that the draft finds out if you are simply eligible to server if you are ever needed, and as mentioned, no more than the people signing up voluntarily have been needed since 2010.

Approx. 60% of the maps are wrong for Switzerland, i.e. Switzerland HAS conscription and it has NO city that is its own political entity at a national level. Zürich is just the name of a city AS WELL AS a Canton. The CANTON of Zurich is the ONLY entirty at the national level, the city of Zurich is NOT.

I don't know about other countries, but most brazilians men don't went through military service. We (men) have to go to a place owned by the army, the navy or or the aeronautics in the year we turn 18 and usually, after some bureaucracy, most of us just make an oath to fight for Brazil if needed and you are free to go

7:41 Hey I am from India and my guess would be it has something to do with 'Age of Population' and the struggle to get 'stable in life'. India's population is young (youth) and during young age where you try to start business, work in some company or any other thing and due to lot of competition it results in many failure and ultimately makes many people unhappy and dissatisfied with life. (Also not forgetting other thing such as Overpopulation which means 'more competition' and low/average standard of living due to getting comparatively low salary)

Fun fact: The reason Bremen is a city state in Germany is because Bremen and Bremerhaven (coastal bremen) when germany was occupied between the allies and the soviets, Bremen was a city of the american part, along with Bavaria. When West Germany unified, Bremen remained a city state of Germany.

Watching these videos I sometimes wonder if toycat has brilliant edits/cuts that we don't notice or if he doesn't need to breathe to talk this fast and continues.

Speaking english and French I lived in Beijing even for 6 months as a college student with only ever minor problems and the few times I was stuck translate apps tended to sort it out enough, mainly around elderly population. From a lot of my travelling post then it’s really a case of English will get you by in most areas.

I think it is important to point out that your house size map was average and not median house size. This makes a huge difference in the US where there are outliers of people who own houses with 10000+ sq ft. My 800 sq ft apartment is pretty typical in the US.

A couple years ago Tokyo had a larger population than Canada but for the last 2 or so years Canada has been larger. Tokyo's population is below 38 million while Canada's population is above it though I can't remember the exact amount

Norway is an interesting one for military service. they call in everyone of a certain age each year (men and women since 2015) for an interview, but since the early 2000s, only those who really want to serve actually have to join up. And you certainly don't have to go into a front-line role. For many people, it's a good way into a career. but most just don't actually get recruited due to lack of interest.

Actually, in America many major hospitals have helicopter units called "Care Flights" that will land to help seriously injured or sick people to compensate for the sometimes vast distance to a hospital. If the situation is serious enough, care flights will come from much further away than the closest hospital just to give them care at a more advanced hospital.

With Australia it is because there are a lot of large farms that increase the average by a lot

3:07 Sweden may have mandatory military service but it's taken a bit out of context, the year you become 18 you fill out a form where one of the questions is also if you want to do the military service where you usually won't have to if you say no. If you get called in to do some tests you will have to go and if you get approved it is mandatory to do the military service.

Military conscription isn't mandatory in Mexico since 2000 iirc. It is still considered a civil duty, tho. But you're not enforced to do it anymore.

8:17 - The reason the American constitution hasn't changed is not because they are more conservative with it than other countries. It's because America's government has never been overthrown. Countries don't change it on a whim. In the rest of the world, countries have more recent constitutions because they've been overthrown by coups, Communists, Fascists, juntas, monarchies, colonialists and regional warlords. The US hasn't had that since its inception as an independent nation in 1776. It had a rebelion from the south, but it failed, thus the old government never lost power and the republic was never re-made.

Well, I live in Sweden and can tell you that there is not really any mandatory conscription into the army. It's a rather complex system that I won't go into right now. But in short, you get a letter in the mail, you reply with one of three options. I want to serve, I maybe want to serve or I don't want to serve. In Sweden, there are a lot of people that wish to serve so there is never anyone that gets forced into service. It used to be mandatory but now adays it is up to each individual.

On the having a car topic: The streets in the US are also just not usually conducive to walking. For example, I take the bus to work, but every day I have to run across a 3-lanes (on each side) road to get to the bus stop, because they didn’t put a single crosswalk nearby. I’ve never been to a country outside USA or Canada (bc financial reasons), but I’ve just heard the cities are designed more for people and less for cars in other countries.

Needs an update. Norway abolished the civil service system as an alternative to people who refused military service. Now if you refuse, you just go on with your life instead of being forced into kindergarten with guns.

14:00 as an American I'd say that room is like a kids bedroom, if the ceiling didn't form down to the size of roof it'd be a pretty normal sized room. The headspace is what makes me say kids room. Maybe a bit bigger and you'd get the living room.

I am from india. I don’t think most people are unhappy here. Yes, there is a lot of poverty when compared to other nations but per captia wise India wouldn’t be unhappy imo. I’m curious why china wasn’t there in that map considering their social credit system being a massive pain in butt for Chinese people. Who knows 🤷🏽‍♂️

I live in Spain and Madrid does have its own region that goes by the same name, and at the same level as all the other autonomies. Also, the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the north African coast are both cities and regarded as such under our constitution.

With map 11, the only reason Australia is in it is because Darwin is too small to not be grouped as a whole city in our electoral system. Every other city is a mess of electorates

Canada who finally did a road test and got a full driver's license after 30 here, I WISH I lived in a walkable city. I grew up in a somewhat walkable city with a passable transit system. I moved provinces a decade ago and it doesn't even feel like the same country.

Military conscrption is not mandatory in Mexico, unless you want to work with the police or similar, since they do ask your for the certificate the military gives you (called "Cartilla Militar"). *Edit: When you turn 18, you go to a sort of gathering in your local "military barracks", where a sort of raffle is performed. Once your name is called, a military officer pulls out a ball from a box, if it is white, you are meant to do military conscription for the certificate, if it's black, you are given the certificate without the need of you conscripting.

Sweden used to have mandatory military service, but it stopped a while ago. First it was that about 50% of men had to and then it was removed completely. However, if necessary (in war for example) citizens are obliged to help the military.

Re the vehicles map: one big problem here in North America is that in many cities, zoning and transportation planning leans so far in favor of driving that there is no meaningful choice to be made, and many people are essentially forced to get around in the most dangerous, polluting and space-inefficient way: cars

The night before the COVID lockdowns happened I ended up getting black-out drunk; I woke up in a hospital and I walked home. This was in Austin (Texas) in the most walkable zipcode in the state. I really enjoy living in an area where bars, shops, etc are within walking distance.
