Sublime is such a heavily underrated band. They drew from so many different styles- punk, reggae, psychedelic rock, hip-hop. They could sing about the pain of addiction, or the joy of surfing... Or they could sing about the cops and start a motherfu*king riot lol.

I listened to Start Today for the first time back in the summer after Finn talked about it in a previous video, and its been on repeat on my spotify and quickly became one of my favorite albums. The title track and "first failure" really spoke to me. As someone who's struggled with procrastination and a lot of negative self-talk since I was really young, those two songs in particular, especially first failure, really hit home to me. Especially when I think back on some of my best achievements throughout my life, they came after a lot of failure and persevering and not giving up after messing up once. Even now, when I mess up on something I can hear those songs playing in the back of my head sometimes lol and it reminds me that I'm not a failure just cause I messed up on one thing.

Glad I’m not the only ALL fan! I remember first hearing that album long after hearing everything else Descendents had done… It took me so long because I was confused and thought it was a split album or full album by ALL the band, who I had already determined I didn’t care much for. But I heard Clean Sheets somewhere and was like “Where did this best Descendents song ever come from?!” I feel like ALL is a kind of under appreciated album, and your commentary was right on!

100% agree about Sublime!!! Happy ska and raggae music with dark, dark, dark, lyrics about addiction and self-loathing, about how self-loathing often leads to addiction. Bradley's voice is amazing and he's under-recognized as a great singer with a super emotional delivery. The songs "Garden Grove" and "Pawn Shop" will nearly make you cry once you get what he's really singing about.

When Phineas likes a band that mixes nu metal and deathcore, you know he's being honest. I think most people hate them because they're "supposed to," like a validation card rather than the music being bad. Some is, in literally every genre, but unless you don't like common traits, parading it around that you hate something comes off as more insecure and pretentious than liking it sometimes.

Something that is underrated or unacknowledged about peep is his homophonic rhyming. It’s almost like broadway musicals, or, as much as I hate to compare them, Eminem. It made his songs really flow and feel like he was speaking to you while also singing/rapping. It’s one of the things that separates a lot of great lyricists (like Eminem or the legendary playwright Stephen Sondheim) from good ones. “Let me go, I’m spending time not doing fine but I’m doing fine” This is an example of something that should only rhyme once, but the way he delivers it makes it sound like he’s rhyming nearly every other word. Truly a special talent indeed, and gone way too soon. It really felt like he was only getting better as his career went on.

Good list here Finn. Thank you for covering Sublime, i'm releasing a documentary on them in 2023. Bradley Nowell was one of the worst loses of the entire music industry. He was one of the rare greats with a proven IQ on paper of over 140 even by the time he was 13 years old, by 25 he was no doubt a full blown Genius. (this was stated in his biography by a private school program) He was deeply invested in academic philosophical studies before he dropped out of college to pursue Sublime full time. He read countless books like Nietzsche on his free time. One of the reasons for trying heroin was a very deep party culture in the 80s but underneath the veil it was his insecurity with his own creativity in music, which ultimately lead to his depression and search for existential meaning of life. Their music was undoubtably Raw, Unfiltered, Unapologetic, Energetic, Boundless, Painful, and Beautiful. People will not realize until decades later that Sublime is one of the most influential and greatest bands of all time.

Badfish is also one of my favorites since you brought it up, my 40 oz to freedom CD had a skip in it during the first minute during the line "but I'm a parasite" and always skipped at the word parasite making it "para-ah-asite" and now I can't listen to the song without the skip, even when I burned the CD to my computer for my mp3 player (Jesus I feel old 😭) the skip stayed in the CD on the file so I just became so accoustomed to it (this skip also cut out the whole last half of 5446 that's my number/ ball and chain also)

40oz to Freedom was 1992, their 1994 album was Robbin tha Hood which is probably their hardest to listen to record because it was literally recorded in a drug house in the midst of a binge and the songs that came out of those sessions (save for Saw Red) are just a complete mess and its really sad. Bradley passed in 1996 right before their self-titled album came out, they were just barely starting their tour cycle for it. It's hard for me to choose between 40oz and their self-titled as to which ones better, i think both are 10/10's and i still rotate both CD's regularly, absolutely incredible shit

Bradley was a musical genius. I am a producer/musician myself, and this guy heard melodies in his head and took other songs and made them his own. Lots of people try and clown Sublime calling them a glorified cover band, but Bradley was just taking bits and pieces of all the music he loved and wanted to share with others, and put them in his own songs. There is a pretty clear cut trajectory of the type of music you possibly get into from Sublime: roots reggae, punk, 80's/90's hiphop, ska, dub, alt rock, etc. Rewind Selector is an amazing resource for diehard Sublime fans, basically showing you where Brad got his inspirations from. I hate when people clown them and pigeonhole them to a college frat boy stoner band because like you said Finn, their music is a lot deeper than what you hear on the surface. Bradley inspired me to play guitar back in 97-98 when I was 10. He will always be my musical hero next to Brian Wilson. RIP Bradley

Respect...a lot of bands take a lot of undeserved crap from music meme IGs and stuff, and don't really give up-and-coming music-knowers a chance to make their own decisions. Sure we're all tired of hearing 50-year-olds do acoustic covers of Santeria at restaurants, but that shouldn't be an indictment of a band's whole legacy.

COWYS is a great album but I don’t think it’s anywhere near as good as some of his earlier tapes, Hellboy, crybaby and especially lil peep part one all mop the floor with COWYS.
