All Downton Abbey's servants feel sorry about disrupted wedding ceremony. Lots of food leftovers though, but whether lobster, canapes and asparagus would taste better than cheese?

I like how everyone is pitying Edith and thinking how it is the end of everything for her but Alfred comes out with "she can do much better"! He's not in awe of the family and states his opinion freely and unbiasedly.

My grandmother was a parlour maid in an urban mansion in the 1920s and she always used to tell us about the food served in the servants’ hall. Upstairs dinner often went practically untouched as there was an emphasis on the number of courses and abundant display rather than what was realistically going to be eateb. Servants’ dinner was insubstantial compared to the hearty servants’ meal served at lunchtime so the junior servants relished in eating leftovers from upstairs dinner. Bearing in mind that my granny had lived an impoverished life in her childhood eating mostly bread, oatmeal and vegetables, the exposure to these leftover dishes was a phenomenon to her. Even in her nineties she would still delight in telling us her first memories of eating pheasant, grouse, roe, sorbet, ice cream, meringue etc.
@Xerxes2005
@Xerxes2005 Месяц назад
That's how it happened in Versailles too. The King would eat, then his guests, then the servants would eat the leftovers and the rest was given to the poor. It gives you an idea of the amount of food prepared if there was still enough leftovers for the poor after all these people ate before them!

Even if he didn’t know what the food was, or didn’t like it, as someone aspiring to be a chef, he should have shown some interest. It’s really amazing the nonsense people will post just to avoid having to accept that the writers screwed up. I find it interesting that most of the sympathy for Edith was more about how embarrassing the day must have been for her, and less about the idea that she had suddenly lost the life she thought she was going to have with the man she loved. It seems to reflect the idea that for someone in Edith's position the main purpose of marriage would be about security and fulfilling society's' expectations. Edith did care deeply for Sir Anthony, but even for her it looks like that may have been a big part of her motivation for wanting to be with him. That, and the fact that he seemed to be the only person at that time that treated her like she was anything special. Alfred seems to be the only one that has a slightly different view of the whole thing, which is why his reaction is so out of sync with everyone else's.

I have always felt a bit more sorry for Sir Anthony Strallen, than for Edith. Of course he should have stood up for himself better, and earlier, but he was pressured by Edith at every step of the way to the altar. He had liked her of course, but while I agreed with her, and disagreed with both him and her family that he was a bad match; the fact that he thought he was, and she didn't take his feelings into serious enough consideration, made this as much or more her fault than his. There is an old saying about women and their determination to get a particular someone to marry them, that applies to this situation. "She chased, and chased him, till he caught her." Sometimes a woman has to chase a man quite a long time, till he catches her, lol. And that certainly happened here. I feel sorry for Edith, she certainly didn't deserve this. But Anthony Strallen deserved it even less. He never meant for this to happen. He no doubt went through agonies for days and weeks, trying to figure out what he should do. He should have put his foot down much, much earlier, but he truly loved her, and was a genuinely nice man, as are most of the people in Downton Abbey, and he just didn't have it in him to be as firm with Edith as was called for in retrospect. At least not until she had got him right to the literal altar.

This scene makes no sense at all. Writer Julian Fellowes has already started in a very small way to have Alfred be interested in cooking as a career. So why would he be the one to make the comments indicating his lack of interest in such fancy foods such as the ones left over from the failed wedding reception? Someone else should have been given those lines. Fellowes is an amazing writer, but this is one of a few storylines that don’t make complete sense. I’m glad Mrs. Hughes always speaks the truth (no matter what Carson wants, although for some odd reason he has her back off somewhat after they marry...??). Someone needed to give crap to that jerk who jilted Edith. I’m glad they didn’t marry, obviously, but he didn’t have to do it in the worst way possible! Wimp.
@inayatahmed5828
@inayatahmed5828 5 лет назад
Happybidr Carson is only ever I interested in sticking up for Mary. He even developed hostility for Matthew (who was actually the heir to Grantham) because of Mary. But since it's Edith who was jilted he couldn't care less. Plus the real blame for the disaster lies with Violet and Robert. Violet brought sir Anthony back into Edith's life and Robert disapproved of the match and the family should have persuaded them to give up the wedding before they got to the altar.

no, they're supporting her because she is from the house and Sir Anthony isn't. besides, what on earth would they know about how things went on between the two? they only saw a wedding organised then cancelled.

In that era, an upper-class girl who did not make a good match by the time she was 21years old was considered an old maid. Edith was nearing or had passed that mark. The Dowager opposed the match; but Robert (Edith's father) was keen for his daughter to marry a well-off man. Sir Anthony was Baronet as opposed to Robert being an earl (count). But as an unmarried woman, Edith would have had to be supported from the funds of Downton. And, she would have been severely restricted socially, as her sisters were already married.*** Robert was probably considering that Sir Anthony might not live that much longer and by marrying him, Edith would have been financially secure with- or without children. I have often wondered, as I watched Downton Abbey; how much older Robert's father was from Violet (the Dowager) Robert and his sister had already been born when Violet accompanied her husband to Russia. ***Sometimes a pair of unmarried …… sisters or cousins were invited to big events for the aristocracy. However, they were not invited to the many house parties with others of their social class. House parties were for couples. A "respectable" unmarried woman, who was not "fair game" (like the some assumed that the servants would be) would have been considered a "downer" or a "ball/chain" at such an (often a "swinging") event. During the Edwardian era; it was common for Edward vii to be with one of his many mistresses at these week-long parties. Other couples often, discreetly, had affairs with their special "other" during these events. [Edward vii, preferred to have married lovers -- Then they had as much to loose as him if they were found out]
