I cook my egg shells and use vinegar to make a diluted calcium solution that is ready to spray onto my foliage for tomatoes and peppers. It's the JADAM method and it works great.

I buried a Lowe’s bucket with holes in my raised bed for composting kitchen scraps. It comes with a lid and super easy to maintain. It provides instant compost tea when it rains. Working just fine for years!

I boil eggs shells then put them into a blender. They turn to dust and I throw them straight into my garden. Don’t waste anything if you can help it. It’s all free compost after all. 😁

Don’t stress too much about putting the wrong thing in compost. The main issue is not putting enough brown matter in with kitchen scraps and not mixing the pile. You should try a “no rules” compost experiment. Put all the nightshades, seeds, pizza, meat into the compost with a lot of fall leaves. I predict it won’t matter at all

Go to your nearest mini mart and ask them to save the coffee grinds from the morning rush.....get there by noon or one and you are golden.😊

Oh well. I filled up my new trash can composter with, among other things, the remnants of my tomato plants that I cut down just before last week's freeze.

A lot of folks say tomatoes are fine for compost I routinely compost tomato cores and leftovers

If that is the case, I would not use that compost on any of my disease susceptible plants. You could use it on lettuce, brassicas, root vegetables, peas, around flowers and fruit trees, but I would not use that on my peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, etc. They share too many diseases.

Pet waste is OK IF it’s rabbit or Guinea pig waste. They are vegetarian and their waste is a fantastic compost and soil amendment.

It won't matter what they eat. What matters is the bacteria from their intestinal tract. I would not want to put any of that in my composter. You can spread it in empty gardens beds if you want, but not in an enclosed container.

I personally would compost it separately, same as chicken manure and the bedding. It’s very good but would do it separately in an open pile/ pallet pile. But everyone to there own.

Have you thought of blending the egg shells to puñverize them to decompose faster?

Yes. Too complicated and time consuming. If that is a requirement, I won't compost them. Composting should be easy to encourage as many people as possible to do it. The more time and equipment it takes, the less people will do it. Cleaning a grinder every time I eat an egg won't work.

@@2MinuteGardenTips good point on keeping it simple. I've seen other gardening channels do that with their egg shells to use as calcium addendums to soil. I thought it might help with your composting.

@@3moiraii personally do it, and add the egg shells to the worm farms as that helps produce an incredible soil fertiliser, meaning you don’t need to buy chemicals. I do a box of egg shells at a time, not 1 by 1 but by the dozen. Makes a huge difference. Just rinse the shells after use so they are clean and put them in a pot till you have enough.

Can you compost any type of shredded paper or cardboard?

To my knowledge yes but consider that some may be treated with more glue or artificial “chemicals” in their composition.

I use cardboard as weed barrier around trees here and there, but I don't personally use any shredded paper or cardboard in my compost. I don't want any of those paper chemicals in there.

I used to lay out cardboard as weed barrier until I heard it contains microplastics. This is bcz tape is still stuck on cardboard boxes through the recycling process. There's noone peeling off all that plastic tape.
