I would never describe my characters as heroes. THey would never think of themselves in this way. But the ones I love the most have all of these qualities. It's not even something they consider. It's just ingrained in who they are. I love this breakdown and it makes me so happy.

I think it’s not so much about how the characters feel about themselves than it is just the function they play in the story. I’d say most ‘heroes’ rarely think of themselves as such. Personally my favorite hero type characters are the ones who don’t want to be a part of the story but because they naturally have these traits, they end up having to save the day whether they want to or not. @@WritingQuest - i come from a roleplay writing background. Things like D&D, Warcraft, Star Wars, and so on. A good example of how it works is from Jack Grapes' Method Writing. Which means delving deep into the mind and emotions of a character and bringing them out. The 'character' is a person first, rather than a narrative device, at least for me. Who the character is, what their history is, their personality, their thoughts and feelings tend to come first. But... they always wind up stepping in. Even if they wind up stepping in it sometimes. They'll clean it up too.
