When I think winter, I automatically think of Dr. Zhivago-both the movie and the book. Winter is used as a device to highlight the beauty of the season but also how harsh it (and life itself) is, and they contrast it with the spring time, and how life is easier then.

My two favorite booktubers are both winter-loving girlies - you and Emmie/Emma 💕 you described winter so well through these books, loved this. I read Hunger earlier this year because of you and it was so moving! It has stuck with me in a very haunting way. I feel like I don’t have a lot of winter recs under my belt, but I did just finish Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and felt like that was a really good spooky, unsettling winter book!

Love your energy!! And just what I needed to finally pick up Knut Hamsun's 'Hunger' which has been on my TBR shelf for ages. Do give James Joyce's 'The Dead' a try; very atmospheric and bleak. Yasunari Kawabata's 'Snow Country' is definitely a winter read through and through. I would also recommend Mike Leigh's 'Naked' (a film) if you haven't already watched it. It's gritty, existential, and cold. It reeks of suffocation, which I think might be reminiscent of Hamsun's 'Hunger'. Also, I just thought of Kafka's 'The Castle' though I'm not sure if the story is set in the winter, but it does evoke a similar feeling. Again, great video. Can't wait for more!

With most writers, the best part of them is what they put on paper. I suggest to be careful about assuming the personal "great guyness" of your favorites. Large publication is a massive ego rush that many cannot withstand. And others like Bukowski, Celine and Pound (all favorites of mine) have had enormous egos even while wallowing in poverty
@AnaWallaceJohnson
@AnaWallaceJohnson 7 месяцев назад
Agreed! I don’t think Krakauer has too much of a personality off the paper, or any that I’ve heard of. Bukowski and the others definitely have their reputations outside of the books (i do find myself sometimes considering that almost more than their actual work)

This was so fun! also, you should try the storygraph, it's a lot better than goodreads, you can give 025,.5 and .75 star values, you can track audiobooks separately, and they've got this really great challenges feature, i've been doing the around the world challenge where you track how many countries you've read books from, there's no deadline per se, just a great way to find books and track them. Also, the perfect winter books for me are the original fairy tales, hans christian anderson, grimm brothers, perfectly dark and fireplace-y.
