Killer Instinct SWAT X1 (starting 2023)
Burris Oracle X Scope (since 2022)
Dragon Claw arrows from Wyvern Creations (good outfit, been buying different gear there for years, these arrows are great in the SWAT)
All of our crossbows use the following, 100% of time:
Burt Coyote Lumenoks (since 2012 or so) (save 10% on lumenok.com with coupon code BUNJIE )
Swhacker #251 3" cutting diameter crossbow broadheads (for our last 20 or 30 deer) (save 10% off select broadheads including this "perfect" model using coupon code BUNJIE2324 on their website: swhacker.com/discount/BUNJIE2324 )
Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie and I have written two books: The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method ( amzn.to/3zJbAI0 ) and The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story ( amzn.to/2Peq4aC ), both available on Amazon.com with those links.
Check out the Gear Page on our website, deathbybunjie.com. Again, I am not sponsored by anyone! But you can see what gear I like and don't like on that site. And if you buy from Amazon.com using one of those links, Death by Bunjie receives a small referral fee and you DO NOT pay more! How cool is that?
Check out the Death by Bunjie podcast, Talking with Bunjie! It's available on deathbybunjie.com or on the podcast app of your choice.
Facebook much? deathbybunjie
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows), a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at around 400 fps! This crossbow helped expand the Kingdom fo Bunjie by introducing me to compound crossbows and showing me they're nothing to be feared, and also helped me get my first deer on public ground. This crossbow also inspired the "Rule of 400" that I talk about from time to time: a crossbow that can shoot a 400 grain arrow at 400 feet per second is the definition of a modern crossbow--producing over .7 slugs of momentum and over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy, the envy of the archery world.
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, Yankee Militia. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
If you've read this far, then there is only one thing left to say:
All Hail Bunjie!

Great content I just switched to swacker 150gr I was shooting 100 gr rage I can wait to try them in the 2nd season here in pa I shoot a centerpoint amp415 and the scope is dead on out to 40 yards with the swacker 150 gr and love the penetration much more than the 100gr

That's great! It sounds like the extra 50 grains up front more than makes up for the extra inch of exit wound!

The conversation about broadheads is like a conversation about who makes the best pizza, lol, its all about personal preference... nothing could pull me from my 150 gr Tooth of the Arrow solid fixed broadheads...NOTHING... you are awesome my friend! Another excellent video, Rich! I love the Lumenoks! Seven shots with the crossbow in three seasons and seven deer recovered using the Sevr Robusto 2.0 150 grain broadhead. My 10 year old grandson got his first deer ever using my setup. I tried sending you a video of his shot but it wouldn't go thru to your old email. Anyway, keep up the good work! 🦌

This year I bought 3 relatively inexpensive 2 blade mechanical broadheads from Walmart. I know not a good idea but when opened they were large cut broadheads. I shot two deer with them and both had very very good blood trails. Even through I had success I recommend a better quality head such as the Schwacker.

Rich maybe it's that we are pretty close in age😊 but you have followed my exact path. Excalibur Mega 405 with the bolt cutter. Had perfect shot on a doe and only found like 2 drops of blood 😢. So I just walked in tge direction I thought the doe ran and a bit later I just ran across that doe not following any blood trail. Just dumb luck. I was done with fixed heads period. Along came swhacker 2" cut. Much better blood trail. Then i found the 3" 150 gr Swhacker and I am done testing BH's❤❤❤. Flat out best Blood trails. I wish I could send you a picture of my buck from this year showing the 3"150gr swhacker entrance and exit. Beautiful and perfect operation. Goid video Rich. Rich, thanks again for a great video. Lots of info in there. I have used Swhacker in the past and have recently come full circle back to them. They really do leave an incredible exit hole. Question...Have you ever had a deer not drip any blood after using those. It has happened to me on two occasions. With using a compound a few years ago, and, just recently this year with a crossbow. Both times the deer was quartering to me. The broadhead entered just behind the shoulder and exited just passed the last ribs on the opposite side. Both times HUGE hole on exit, but, due to the quartering too angle and the downward angle from shooting from the tree stand, the exit wound was plugged with guts and bled internally only. Even the fur around the exit hole was as clean as the rest of the deer. Thankfully both deer were recovered. I just have to remember to have more patience and wait for that perfect broadside shot.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 7 месяцев назад
I've never had that happen to me but I will say that if the exit wound is through the opposite shoulder then it does seem to block some of the blood as the deer runs and moves the shoulder in front of the hole if that makes any sense. So the blood is farther apart. But then again I've had that with every Broadhead I've ever used on occasion. It's the nature of the wound, not the broadhead. But I can tell you that across the board the performance of these is 100% consistent.

Nowadays there are numerous great broadheads available. I must say, for my .02 I love a good mechanical in a crossbow! The Swahacker is a great head! I have had great success with the SWAT Broadheads. The accuracy has been outstanding and the carnage is incredible! 2” hole going in and up to 4” hole coming out. The deer I’ve taken with it were dead in seconds. Although they didn’t run much, blood was everywhere. A good performing head is an essential part of success. I’m actually excited about the many great heads out there and when you find one that works great for you, it’s worth it’s weight in gold!

Good morning. I have been a compound shooter and recurve since the mid 70s. Tried a BUNCH of broadheads, some worked great so.e not so great, both fixed and mechanical. Several years ago I switched to the Shwacker 2 blade with great success. couple years ago I went to the Shwacker 3 blade mechanical!! Holy " bungie" those performed amazing! This year I started shooting a cross bow and used the Shwacker 3 blade mechanical with GREAT SUCCESS, a beautiful 9 ptr. Sadly I went to order more, or new blades either ones I could get, Shwacker no longer makes the 3 blade mechanical, however they do make a 3 blade fixed. I'm sure it's a great broadhead, I'm just seriously STUCK, no pun intended on their 3 blade mechanical! it's devastating!! Hopefully Shwacker will bring back their 3 blade mechanical! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Really enjoy your vlogs!

@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 7 месяцев назад
I will do a longer video on this someday but the reasoning is there's more arteries, the heart and lungs up front like that. In the past with archery equipment we have been taught to avoid the shoulder because of penetration issues and instead aim close to it but not at it. You may have heard it described as upfront in the vital v. The setup I have now, and other modern setups make that unnecessary.

I totally understand the benefits of that extra push with the Swackers, not opening until after passing through the hide, but am curious with the modern crossbows going at 400+ fps, is it so much of a concern? Just started crossbow hunting this year, but the 100grain rage broadheads helped get complete passthroughs on the deer I shot this fall. That said, when I use them up, I will probably bump up at least to the 125 grain, but I've had such good luck with the rage, I'm hesitant to switch. :)

@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 7 месяцев назад
Now, with the heavier arrows on The OB (563 grains total setup) and the Swahackers, yes I aim more up from. Not TOO far up front, but I'm not in the "Vital V" or "Bunjie Triangle" any more, either. Top of heart, bottom of front of lungs, where all the action is. IMO that's the new POA for modern crossbows (shooting .7 slugs of momentum or more, that's a good POA IMO). So, it's not just the Swahackers that changed my point of aim but they are a part of the overall setup. Arrow weight and speed are factors, too.

I know this is a positive for X-Bows and an argument starter for rifle hunters because I use both ………I may not have the velocity of my rifle ammunition but, damn I am getting as good or close to the accuracy with my X-bow out to 100yards. Even though I think anyone shooting at an animal at that distance with archery equipment is an idiot,no matter what their setup may be. Our accuracy is or can be as good as a rifle- BUT…….That’s only for TARGETS! Only for targets

Best heads really are, best of both worlds. Better than mechanicals that open on the outside and better than fixed because they don’t open until inside giving fresh new blades. Take out the old one and put the new one in, but seriously it isn't that hard depending on what's in there already. I do have a video coming on these during Crossbow Appreciation Month, only a month away!

That's never been a problem for me but I've heard others having that problem. Make sure the battery is installed properly. Other than that I might look into that this summer and see if I can come up with other ideas.

Have you ever tried these broad heads on Bungie? Is 330 fps. fast enough to allow them to open up on a pass through? I have a Bungie and now you have me thinking of switching broadheads on the "stock" ones I use. Thanks for the video.

Actually, I originally got into these broadheads for use on that old slow crossbow. They work great on it! They are part of a perfect Arrow setup on that crossbow, the rest of it being a heavier Arrow, for me around 563 grains total. Opened every time, perfectly, even opened on a watermelon last year during crossbow appreciation month!

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I'm not much of a crossbow hunter or even a big game hunter. But I do go out and use the Excaliber my wife bought me (birthday) 15 years ago. I filmed a few hunts. We have only had a deer season here the past 4 years as we are pretty far north for deer. If you are curious, my channel is called "Musher's Tails." We have big deer compared to you. Trapping, dog sledding, and ,generally, my way of life are on the channel. The Firebolts are too light for the Swhacker? Should I switch to the Dragon Claw bolts? BTW: Yours is the only deer hunting/xbow channel I subscribe to. I like the family aspect and I learn stuff. Thanks for that.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 6 месяцев назад
@@mushercdn the fire bolts are not heavy enough for the older slower crossbow because they don't produce enough momentum. On a more modern and faster crossbow you have a lot more options.

the sevr heads are also much more consistent and accurate than the shwahachers....the ONLY plus to the shwackers is a slightly larger exit whole...you are also giving away on penetration.....sever heads are also more durable

I don't think I'm giving away penetration when I get passthroughs on all but spine shots lol

raves about shwackers, immediately show one with a complete blade failure. Exactly the reason I switched from mechanicals to single bevels this year. Blades turned 90 degrees don’t cut. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Comparing a 2-blade mechanical broadhead to a 3-blade or 4-blade fixed broadhead in this manner is a bit deceptive. A 2-blade broadhead can only give you a one-dimensional cut. A tiny 4-blade Stick Standard broadhead with 1" blades is giving you a 1" + 1" = 2' of total cut, which is EQUAL to any 2" two-blade mechanical on the market. As far as flight goes, the four 1" blades may have superior flight to the two 1" blades of a Swhacker in flight. A Slick Trick Standard is their original Magnum broadhead (exact same ferrule) with 1" blades instead of their Magnum's 1 1/8" blades (= 2.25" total cut). I believe the Standards may fly better & penetrate elk better for vertical bow guys. I'm not promoting Slick Trick. I just know their blades without looking them up. It would be the same type of numbers with Magnus & other brands, too. I'm not knocking 3" Swhacker broadheads in the least. If you have the horsepower to push them through every time, by all means go for it on whitetails. Crossbows level the playing field, & that is why so many people love them! A 10 year old child could send one through a deer if the crossbow is set up right. I shot a doe & a nice 11 point buck (60 pound compound bow) this past fall using a small Slick Trick Viper Trick 4-blade broadhead (1 15/16" total cut) that I made sure was razor sharp I didn't track either deer. I heard the doe drop (vegetation was too thick to see her 50 yards from my stand in late September). I just walked to where I heard her crash. The 11 pointer took about 5 jumps, stopped to look at his side, wobbled a bit, & fell over backwards about 35 yards from my stand in early November. Who needs a blood trail? My point is any good broadhead will put a deer down quickly if a good shot is made. I shot a late season doe with a .308 Winchester 150 grain Remington Core Lokt round this past weekend. Her front shoulder was destroyed, but she ran the furthest of the 3 deer I shot this fall. I didn't see or hear her drop. I own a Swat X1. I just haven't taken it out of the box yet. So please don't slam me for not being a crossbow hunter. I own two of the darn things! 🤣

@driftlesshunter9200 I totally get not changing up mid stream! I think you'll be impressed. It's a great representation of a modern crossbow, and perhaps it'll convince you penetration is not an issue with the modern crossbows and we can use the mechanical broadheads all day long. 😀 I know, I know, different strokes for different folks but when you find something you like, you want to tell the world and you want other people to like it too. That's kind of where I'm at. 😅 Oh and thank YOU for watching!
