For anyone wondering about Singapore's chewing gum ban, here is some background info: Singapore used to be really dirty a number of decades ago, with extremely polluted waterways and dirty streets and whatnot. When Singapore started gaining wealth the government made a big effort to clean things up on many fronts. There was a problem of people just sticking used chewing gum everywhere, which is hard to clean, so the government banned the sale of it. Just the sale. The act of chewing gum is not frowned upon in any way, nor is it illegal in Singapore. Stores in Singapore just don't have the license to sell it. It did reduce the amount of gum stuck everywhere in public, so it could be considered a successful law. At the same time, anyone who actually wants to chew gum can easily just buy some from Malaysia (many Singaporeans grocery shopped in Malaysia during pre-COVID times, the border is like 40km away from the furthest point in Singapore) or get some from friends who recently went there. But on the whole, not many people are that into gum anyway because we never really grew up with it. Also, yes we do have caning for punishment for some crimes, but selling gum is definitely nowhere near a cane-able crime.

as a singaporean, if i’m not wrong the government banned it because of how gum just sticks to stuff and become near impossible to remove, and how people just tend to stick chewed up gum wherever convinient is like a nono to them. personally whenever i go overseas, i just seek out the nearest sweet shop and buy a bottle of gum so i can enjoy it.
