When I was a kid I used to like imagining that Canada would ditch the British monarch and replace it with a randomly selected Canadian family that would become the new royal family and Kings/Queens of Canada, and of course I liked to imagine our family being chosen for that purpose, lol.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines wasn't invaded by the US. That happened to Grenada in 1983 because the US claimed Grenada was building an airport for a Soviet/Cuban military base (it was just for tourism to make it easier to fly directly there; they were even building it with the help of the UK), and to rescue American medical students during a time when Maurice Bishop was overthrown by someone (Bernard Coard) within his own party. Bishop died as a result. The Cubans that defended the military government installed by Bernard Coard were expelled.

Mozambique joined because they cooperated with the Commonwealth in their efforts against white minority rule in South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Plus, the countries they border were all once part of the British Empire and thus for economic development and to integrate with their neighbors, they joined the Commonwealth (not to mention Mozambique drives on the left because of their neighbors). I think the attitude of removing the Monarch in NZ/AU/Canada might be different if CANZUK finally actually happens; I feel like if they're all connected in that way, keeping a ceremonial royal family won't seem that weird. Also, you made me look it up; there are 4 nations that joined the commonwealth without a link to the UK in the past: Mozambique, Rwanda, Gabon and Togo. As an Australian, I don't really care whether or not the King is the _official_ head of state because we already have Australians doing his job, i.e. the State Governors and the Governor General. What I do care about is the damn flag. We aren't a self-governing colony anymore, we've been legally independent since adopting the Statute of Westminster in 1942. We aren't bound by imperial convention to retain the colonial ensign; we can have our own flag now and we've had decades to change it. However, due to the gradual nature of Australia's independence, there are some who argue that there hasn't been enough major political change to warrant a new flag. If it takes becoming a republic for us to finally get a truly Australian flag, then so be it. I just hope we have an Irish-style president rather than an American one.

Great vid but here's one minor correction. The 5 _boroughs_ of New York City are equally treated as 5 _counties_ of New York State. The names differ depending on either designation. Therefore, as a NYC _borough_ it's called _Brooklyn,_ while as a _county_ of the state, it's called _Kings county._ The same is true for all but one of the other boroughs of NYC; Staten Island/Richmond county, Manhattan/New York county, _The_ Bronx/Bronx county. Only Queens stays the same for both reference. 👍

The varying status of counties from state to state is an odd feature of US government. I grew up in Virginia, where incorporated cities are territorially separate from counties--they are not in any county, even if the city is the government seat of the county surrounding it. Counties only cover unincorporated territory that is not in the city. I thought this was normal but actually it is fairly unusual for the US--there are only a few independent cities outside of Virginia (though coincidentally I was born in one, so I technically have no county of birth). Most of New England, including Massachusetts where I live now, goes to the opposite extreme. There *is no* unincorporated territory--the boundaries of cities and towns cover the entire territory of the state, and city/town government handles nearly all local affairs. Counties cover the state as well but they are a vestigial level of division with very few functions, mostly having to do with the prison and court systems. The state uses them for aggregation of statistics. Some New England states have entirely eliminated county government.

Actually what happened in Australia in 1999 was that the likely majority of people wanted to become a republic, however, the PM didn’t want to be. So in order to be ‘fair’ and have a referendum, he picked a question with a catch that he knew people would disagree with (to have MPs vote for head of state). And with this, people could either vote yes republic with that law or no to leaving commonwealth and no to that law. - it worked for the PM

I mean, I think we all knew this was coming. Its really why the queen's death was such a big deal geopolitically. She was a fundamentally popular and beloved moral guide and head of state, whereas the institution itself was losing popularity. I for one can see the reasoning behind having a monarchy as the technical head of state, as its a great contingency plan in case the actual legislative government goes haywire and it united the commonwealth quite solidly. But I imagine many countries will use it as a great excuse to move on from the days of the British empire and to assert their independence more. With the current trend of the '20's being a time of massive change, the commonwealth beginning to slowly fade away in the midst of the chaos is pretty understandable.

look, as an Australian I’m okay with having a monarch. BUT, not when the monarch has the legal power to remove our prime minister who was legally and democratically voted into office. See: Gough Whitlam. Even if it hasn’t happened, the fact that someone has that power isn’t right. I like Charles, i hope he comes to visit Australia. But at the end of the day, Charles is just a guy who’s blood is his credentials. Even if I didn’t like our prime minister, there are actual and offical ways to get rid of them that don’t involve a monarch. If and when Australia has a referendum, I am voting for a bloody republic
@LordDim1
@LordDim1 2 года назад
The reserve powers are never used unless absolutely necessary. The dismissal of Gough Whitlam was not just a random act which came out of the blue: Whitlam was trying to stay in power in contravention of the constitution. Whitlam’s government did not have a majority in the senate, and the senate was blocking Whitlam’s budget, threatening to plunge Australia into government shutdown. In the Westminster system, if a government cannot pass a budget, they are expected to resign and/or call an election. Whitlam didn’t do this. He refused to resign, and instead asked the Governor-General to dissolve the senate. This was unprecedented: it would have meant that Whitlam’s majority in the house, and thus his position as PM, was secure, meanwhile he was in effect kicking out the opposition from the senate. It was a wild power grab. The GG recognised this and promptly dismissed Whitlam, and instead dissolved the entire parliament for new elections. These elections, of course, were won in a landslide by the opposition. The dismissal of Whitlam was fully justified, and reserve powers like this are vital to a constitution; they exist in basically all parliamentary republics too, where the ceremonial president has the same powers

Long term and long sighted government figures are something to be cherished and kept. If you don't you'll end up up repeating the same mistakes. Queen Elizabeth was the embodiment of this philosophy. They'll majorly lose prestige by going their own way, and will just end up being bought out by another sphere of influence. Any Vicky 2 player knows this maxim well

Being an American, I don't care much for institutions of tradition, but an institution itself should remain always according to tradition, that is a purpose of a kingship, I despise every concept of republicanism on the simple logical principle that man has can rule himself, for who was it to be that he was given rule over himself, who established such things? Why then there be one to enforce a government if he is meant to rule himself, the only rational voting system would be one that lacks any government, which I do not respect. It is not given to man that he be capable to rule himself, it was given for him to be independent of interference from the governance without just cause as his right, but governance wasn't given by man, it was received for the sake of mankind. That logically contradicts any concept of voting, for all rule is established at the behest of the people and it be at the behest of the people to remove their rulers so that a new king be established. I would never bow to a king for I have but one Lord that I shall bow to and He does not reside of this realm, but to a king of my land I shall always respect and devote myself to his benefit so long as he has been anointed by God, for the anointed king of my land shall never have a sword raised nor a word opposed to his anointing, but on the day that he has been cursed by the Lord for what he has done and the rule he established I would seek to remove him and only seek his death if he so enacts violence to prevent such. It is of this I speak of a king for the sake of those who do what is right in their own eyes, for they without a king are lawless and seek naught but destruction. This is the end that all systems of governance that forsakes a king receive. A king should be a true king, one who establishes justice, uses his power to enforce righteousness, seeks truth, speaks honestly, who is kind to the innocent, and condemns the wicked. For if a king has no power he is not a king but fabrication who so claims a false identity. The monarchy of the United Kingdom has long since been a false rule of the sick and sycophants who rape and pillage the rights and hopes of its people claiming to stand for righteousness by harming the innocence. Such a monarchy must be put to death for its transgressions and a new monarchy must be established for the sake of the people, that power would not grow, that evil would not spread, and that justice shall be established. It is for this I pray that violence be unnecessary in any pursuit, but should violence be done that there were be few harmed and none that die, that righteousness would be the king's directive. I speak this for the sake of all the nations that they be sovereign over their lands and establish that which is good. There will come a time when the King shall be made known and all shall bow before His reign and until that day however his emissaries of this age of the realm shall be ever needed. I pray for Him to establish our kings of this era so that we may return to righteousness. And may even this nation and state of mine have our princes and powers of our Lord be established so that The Law shall be established to us. That is what I am to say to all the monarchs of this world. If they do not repent their death shall be upon eternity.

8:10 "I can tell you very few things about them besides the time they were invaded .. uh, by the US." Are you're not thinking of Grenada? The US invaded Grenada in 1983, with the HELP of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, and St. Kitts and Nevis (which is officially "The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis", by the way, if you'd never heard that "Kitts" could be short for "Christopher"), or rather, some infantry, police, and paramilitary units from all these countries were involved in either the initial invasion or the subsequent "peacekeeping". Cuba at least somewhat supported the Grenadian military government, or at least Cubans were captured and expelled, which is a bit odd, because the invasion was supposedly in response to the military overthrowing the Marxist-Leninist government and executing it's Prime Minister, but what they did was restore power to the government the Marxist-Leninists had seized power from.

Getting rid of the monarchy may leave an opening for something that is FAR FAR WORSE , just look at what happened to Germany when they got rid of the Kaiser , Italy had a way to bounce back from Mussolini by siding with their king , but Germany only had Hitler and no Kaiser as the emergency backup plan. And while the CURRENT governments may be benevolent right now , but that is no guarantee that this will always be the case.

Why the King is a good idea (using Canada as the basis but this still works for other countries): Essentially, his job is to be a backstop: if everything’s going normally, then he’s supposed to be effectively invisible - but he becomes very, very necessary if things are starting to go sideways. Under normal circumstances, for example, Parliament sends laws over to the governor general, the governor general signs them, and the King doesn’t play any role at all. But let’s say that a prime minister, let’s call him Dick Tater Wannabe, sends a plainly unconstitutional bill over to Rideau Hall which bans elections and makes him prime minister for life. The governor general simply disallows it as unconstitutional, and the King still isn’t needed - it’s what happens next where the King starts to matter. Step one: Mr. Wannabe responds to the disallowance by trying to dismiss the governor general and replace them with a loyalist who will sign the bill. Well, guess what: because the prime minister merely recommends the appointment or dismissal of governors general and it’s the King who has to sign off on them, it becomes the King’s job to say no, I’m not accepting your recommendations. Step two: Mr. Wannabe then tries to direct the Canadian military to have the governor general arrested or assassinated. Well, guess what: because it’s the King who is officially the commander in chief of the armed forces, he has the ability to order the chief of the defense staff to stand down and not carry out the prime minister’s wishes. Step three: the governor general dissolves Parliament, but Mr. Wannabe refuses to leave office because he refuses to recognize the authority of the governor general. Again, the King is commander in chief of the military and the prime minister isn’t, so the King has the ability to order the chief of the defense staff to arrest the prime minister and frog-march him out of the House of Commons in chains. Basically, the King’s job is to protect the Canadian constitution by blocking any attempts to tamper with or overthrow it. Like a backstop on a baseball field, his role is normally to just stand there being essentially irrelevant to a game that’s being played in front of him by other people - but if something goes wrong, he’s there to stop the ball from getting past him and causing damage. Essentially, his job is to be invisible unless something has gone wrong, and to protect the stability and continuity of the system if and when it does. Conversely, imagine a system where there’s no head of state at all. Any bill that parliament passes is just automatically law because the prime minister said so, and there’s absolutely no backstop behind him to control him. In that system, Dick Tater Wannabe passes that same law, and you now live in a dictatorship. The end. That’s why countries have heads of state: you need to have somebody outside the legislature who has the power and authority to stop the legislature from exceeding its authority. So now we come to “why a King instead of a President?” Well, imagine a republic in which Dick Tater Wannabe wins election to the Presidency, so that the role which is meant to be the backstop against the danger has itself become the danger, and has no good checks and balances to stop him from overstepping his authority. Then what? Russia, that’s what.
