Sprocket Specifications
• Pitch - 1″ (one inch) and larger
• Face width - up to 6″ (six inches)
• Single piece or segmented pieces
• Bore
• Counterbore
• Drilled mounting holes

Applications
• Asphalt Paving equipment
• Concrete Paving equipment
• Construction equipment
• Conveying equipment
• Elevating Scrapers
• Forestry equipment
• Road Building equipment
• Trenching equipment

Really know all? Ever hear of A2, A3, A4, A6, A10 and D2? Well obvioulsy not as they all air quench to harden and D2 is a likely candidate here because of its toughness, ease of machining and low heat treat distortion. They could easily be using any of the air quench steels. Maybe shut you're pie hole when you have minimal knowledge of a subject.

@@_MadFox No it doesn't. I tried hardening ordinary mild steel once, I only got about 13 Rockwell from memory, might have been 3. I know it wasn't alot, but it was an interesting excercise when I was an apprentice. I don't know the composition of ship steel though, if it has enough carbon in it, it might at least get into 40 to 50 Rockwell and be in the tough range with heat treatment. However, even heat treating low carbon steel will increase it's yield point by around 35% so that might make a pretty tough sprocket.

Considering the worn out old machinery, the end results I suppose are at least usable, but certainly not up to Western standards. My brand new tractor crankshaft (made in India) had journals that were ground with a taper of over half a thou in a one and a half inch length, plus it had a very roughly cut spiral oil groove with razor sharp edges that run against the rope seal. I bought it in preference to having the original one reground but regretted it later. Their definition of 'engineering skill' is certainly different to ours.
