Yeah, the way Aoi was treated was why I applaud the Rush series for giving us better female duelist records with Romin and Yuamu, among others.

Ah, Aoi vs Soulburner...fuck that Duel. You can't convince me writing Duels involving Soulburner is hard when you give him such BS cards. A card that is exclusively only really good against Trickstars and not anything else and a pseudo-Super Poly in an archetype that revolves around summoning its boss monsters using copies of themselves. Don't even get me started about Salamangreat Kernel.

Since you talked about Aoi vs Spectre first-off, I'll do the complete opposite and say that Spectre was also done dirty (if not more than Aoi). Spectre is the right hand of Revolver. Second top dog out there. In his first duel, he absolutely demolishes his opponent, with little to no effort. So you know this guy is strong. Then he duels Playmaker, where he played A LOT BETTER than when he dueled Aoi AND STILL LOST! Bro had: 1) target protection 2) quick play skill drain 3) Goyo guardian 4) any damage I take, YOU TAKE FUCKER! AND HE STILL LOST! HOW? But he dueled the protagonist to the "death", so it is kinda reasonable. Going forward now, season 2 comes and there he has his FINAL ON-SCREEN DUEL OF THE SERIES! So he duels Lightning. He is at a pinch at first, but quickly adapts and builds his board. He got Extra linked, so what did he do in return? Extra link the opponent back? Nope EXTRA LINK FULL MODE HIM + 3 ATTACKS THAT WERE GOING FOR GAME! AND HE STILL LOST! (because of Lightning's cheating, but anyway) He got it all. His perfect field, his signature monsters, he had a beautiful garden while the opponent had a barren field AND HE STILL LOST! And the best part is, THAT'S IT! He has 3 duels overall. He loses two IN A ROW, but he wins his first against FUCKING AOI FOR GOD'S SAKE! That's just miserable man.

That duel was why Aoi is in my "Top 10 worst characters", she's the epitome of how Gallop often fumbles in writing female duelists.

Yuzu got the hands from Sergey so badly she became a ballistic missile, and then never had another duel.

Yugioh writers pretty much openly admitted they suck at writing female characters and it shows

If anyone was done dirty in the Team duel of unicorn, it was Aki.

Vrains had conflicting interests: Developing its side characters and making the protags/villains look good. Aoi and Gore both went through multiple transformations only to wind up in the same place they started, and characters like Ghost Gal become much less impressive as time goes on. Gore goes through a whole arc, and his only W in all this is waking up from a coma after his 4th or 5th consecutive loss. He felt more like a Team Rocket villain, which is not at all what they were going for.

I really liked VRAINS, but it had the worst protagonist plot armor I've seen since Duelist Kingdom in Original Yugioh. Playmaker lost NO duels, he only tied once against Revolver, because every duel he was in was about him having the out to break his opponent's board, especially in Speed Duels with his Skill. Go and Aoi are introduced to be the supporting cast and while Go wins his duel against the Hanoi Knight he was paired against, he goes through the most embarrassing arc in Season 2 and 3 JUST because he was jealous of Playmaker being the hero. And Aoi goes through two revamps, showing how "though" she's gotten but loses on her only duels in Season 2 and 3. Meanwhile, other characters like Ghost Girl can't catch a break even when using meta, out-of-archetype cards. But Soulburner? I like my boi Soulburner, but he was JUST introduced to be a Playmaker 2.0. Everything Playmaker did Soulburner had to copy. He got a piece of the protagonist pie but the supporting cast that had been there for longer couldn't get a crumb.

Even worse specter lost to lightning but won against blue angel I like specter but mam blue angel deserved redemption against him

I've known this channel only now and I loved this video, btw i have some opinions Most of wasted characters in yugioh are basically in that position because either the stakes are way too high or the protagonist has way too many duels, for example: Jaden from Gx has so many duels and wins that they could go to basically anyone else and it wouldn't even steal his feats and accomplishments and in the other spectrum the stakes makes yugioh way too tough to write characters that lose because many duels are so tied to "Death, Coma or Brainwash" that hardly you have main characters losing because it would be game over and plus yugioh has so many opportunities to basically lower the stakes and make it more side character friendly

I remember someone describing Aoi’s treatment in Vrains as “the apotheosis of sexism in yugioh” once and that really stuck with me

About the Characters that appeared in the video, at least most of them were playing the Duel fairly in general. There will be some strange tricks, but the Duelists did their best. Team Unicorn? This Team had already won the Duel, but the group leader (Jean) let himself be fooled by Yusei's comments/provocations and abandoned the Team's strategy, falling into Yusei's Trap Card. Wild to say the least. It would be like saying all the times that Yuga had Dark Revelation on his field and started provoking his Opponents to attack him (luckily, many of Yuga's Opponents are smarter than him in Duels and end up destroying Dark Revelation or have cards that prevent their Monsters from being destroyed by Dark Revelation)

7:00 In fairness, it's Crow; seeing him suffer is its own reward. Only thing _I_ take issue with is that he gets so much higher-quality animation than the more interesting reunion subplot happening concurrently. Oh, and of course the fact that unlike Asuka, _the ass°•○● gets to come back against Zarc, post-DEATH!!_

6:29 I find it especially hypocritical as the main plot structure cribbed from GX so much, down to a Big Bad being a "Supreme King", yet they couldn't care LESS about the actual *characters* from that show. One that the Japanese audience favored more than the director's oh-so-precious 5D's, I might add.

Duels where characters get done dirty are usually more interesting. Nobody would talk about that Aoi duel if she won against Specter.

I still think the Soulburner loss was worse, after attempting to improve it amounted to literally nothing because she still lost to the thing she was trying to fix losing to a beatstick in a duel she had literally no narrative reason to lose against a newbie who came out of nowhere while she was being hyped as the second best ranked duelist in the Vrains And probably Bowman too since she could have won if they didn't change her deck as he had no counter to LIGHT or DARK monsters at that point they had to make her worse to get countered and lose as she should have easily beat him with Trickstars Specter was at least the second in command to the arc's big bad, he should be strong, the only real issue would be her landing on her head there's no excusing that happening to her 8:12 to be fair Rovian doesn't really have that great a record going forward and probably would have lost to either twin if it wasn't a 2 v 1 because that gave the twins more cards so they took more damage from her burn strategy, her deck was twice as effective as it would normally be in that one duel

Yugo vs Serena and Playmaker vs Blue Angel always make me mad because not only is their plot convenience to make the MC lose, but the characters are made to misplay really hard to avoid winning.

Then what about Luka. That girl has litteraly no deck. Everyone of 5ds cast got extenders but her, not only her dragon was ban for a long time, she didn’t even get a evolution like the others ( because she has no deck ) and she was one of the main cast. That girl deserve justice, they should have gave her a control/stun type of deck at least not some random cards put together like she’s an amateur.

Now I need the opposite video: These Duels Redeemed These Characters Yu-Gi-Oh! Discussion vid. I am sure that, among all the Yu-Gi-Oh series, these types of Duels exist. Duels that helped redeem Characters that: - The Character was not very loved, but Duel helped correct his/her reputation. - The Character won many Duels, but it was a specific Duel that defined the Character (or helped his/her image improve in front of the public) - The Character had a bad streak of wins/losses, but a single Duel (usually a win) was enough to redeem the Character (think Taizo Kiyokura from Cardfight!! Vanguard: he was the Jobber of the series, but he only needed to win one Battle to regain the love and respect of people) Amusingly, Luke from SEVENS could be one of this list: the Character was not well liked and always won his Duels. However, one Duel in particular helped improve his image.

I definitely agree with Aoi, she had so much potential and the writers wasted it! I really wanted her to have a rematch with Specter just so she could get payback. Sadly, it didn’t happen. Especially her duel against Soulburner was horrible as well. Poor Aoi, I blame mostly on the writing and direction for this. I honestly don’t care about Crow. Sorry I don’t like him that much. I found him unbearable in both 5Ds and Arc-V. Especially since the director of both series liked him so much that they had to push him to be one of the main cast. I actually like his manga counterpart better because he is more of a side character as he should have been without taking anyone’s spotlight. The Team Unicorn duel was BS! One of the reasons why I don’t like the second half of 5Ds that much despite the inconsistencies is how Team 5Ds don’t do enough growing as a team and just win all the time. Plus heavily relying on Yusei all the time to pull a victory. And it got annoying as it went on. Even Aki got treated horribly because this was the last time she ever got to turbo dueled! She should have taken out Andre and Breo, then have Yusei deal with Jean. Not only that but Team 5Ds should have lost that duel so that way they could learn more about being a team and come back for a rematch against them. Great job on this video.

imagine having two high tier competitive decks in the series and all you do is nearly die each time

writers confirmed Yusei was going to win no matter what against Team Unicorn so it really didn't matter tbh. Yusei had a card in his graveyard that returns itself to the top of the deck at the endphase so it was impossible to deck out yusei.

For go rush, i would change epoch and yuamu vs the gigant woman and her sister because epoch won by cheating, and it's the worst example that you can give. On the others series, they make the others cheaters to lose, but here nobody tried to correct her behavior.

The 5Ds duel isn't just a character assassination, it firmly establishes that an individual badass is far more worth than relying on your useless teammates. And Yusei is the one doing it - the guy constantly spouting about bonds, making friends etc Just blatant hypocrisy on his part - already disliked how he's originally established as the scrappy technician with bad cards who finds ways to win with his worse deck by having his cards together, signified by Junk Warrior being stronger when he has the little guys with him. And they instead focused on ever stronger boss monsters that don't need anyone else to help them

You forgot Revolver vs Playmaker they're first match Revolver could have been Playmaker there and then but the writers forced him to have a pointless draw.

Kaiba vs Joey (both times) and Blue Angel vs Spectre are the equivalent to Hell In A Cell 2019 Rollins vs Fiend imo

I love Spectre. And I also love Aoi. And while I personally thought their duel was good...Aoi still should've gotten her revenge on him at some point. But unfortunately, the writers just forgot about her, so we never saw it.

Mai. In her anime duel against Marik, she has game on board but randomly decides to style on Marik with his boss monster for no reason and ends up losing to Egyptian voodoo nonsense. At least in the manga she's not clowning on Marik before trying to play Ra. Similarly Odion, he loses his only duel because Marik wants to keep up his cover and ends up handing Joey a win he did not earn. Kaiba versus . . . well, any non-Yugi Millennium duelist. Pegasus cheats on every level, Ishizu somehow gets _Kaiba_ branded as the cheater in their duel despite openly admitting that he'd have ROFLstomped her into the dust if she couldn't read the future with the Millennium Necklace, and Bakura just somehow randomly outplays him to a non-finish on a level that feels completely unearned by the fact Bakura loses to any other important character because his decks are "random gimmicky BS go!". The puppet chess duelist from the Yu-Gi-Oh R manga (can't remember her name) that has Joey dead to rights in their duel (as in, she mills him out and just has to end her turn to win). Joey decides to convince her that she won't feel like she "earned" it (interesting choice of words from the guy who passed the first round of Battle City because of a literal TKO) unless she beats him with a monster, then does some bogus Quick-Play fusion and a timing-breaking attack to OTK her with cards he'd set beforehand. This one's kinda unique, since Tristan points out just how bad Joey was for scumming the win.

They really did take a shit all over blue angels character. I don't see why playmaker needed to be the one to beat spectre... Hell, it would've made for a more tense moment when her brother is held hostage, and he sacrifices himself so that blue angel could go all out against spectre and win. Like she won a single duel against Bowman's brother when it mattered, and then she instantly loses against Bowman and is irrelevant. Her and gor were so unfortunately forgettable in Vrains, but blue angel got it even worse than gor somehow... Like, I like Vrains more than arc5, but Vrains is still my second least favorite of everything up until Vrains; I feel like the series needed more time to cook, though arc5 had twice as many episodes and was somehow written worse. Literally... Soulburner comes in halfway through the series, has less time to develop as a character and is somehow more interesting and more of a person than blue angel or gor... How? Lol.

Let's be honest, Yugioh loves to do female duelists dirty at one point or another. Either in duels or taking them and just turning them into a damsel in distress. Sure, I get it that Yugioh is more aimed at a male demographic, but still! Like old school Mai, set up as a Pro Duelist, one of the best of the best, and she just keeps getting slapped around over and over Or Aki from 5Ds, total powerhouse with her psychic abilities and eventually just devolves into this damsel and apparently just forgot how to duel. So silly.

Ok now let’s talk abt zuzu vs yuri where they didn’t even bother to show us the duel they just show her losing horribly 😭

Long comment coming up. I would agree with everything. Especially with the Team Unicorn. Like bro, you didn’t mention how that was Aki last one v one duel and she didn’t even defeat one of them, which I found to be the hardest to believe. Even when compared that final turn, Christ was that bad. But that’s a whole other topic. What I want to bring up is Shun whole character being done dirty in Arc V. That boy life is nothing but pain. Let’s ignore the whole dimensional war nonsense and maybe even the fact that his best friend and sister are no more. And focus on his duels. Shun started off strong with his defeating of the three LDS students at once. And with his second on screen duel between him and Sora, which was undoubtedly the best duel in Arc V. ……and ”It’s all downhill from here”- Super Kami Guru. Yes he does get a few more duels after, with even an incredible rematch with Dennis in the Synchro Dimension. But he takes nothing but L for the rest of the show. After his duel with Dennis, he loses to Crow and Kaito (for some reason. And don’t give them “gotta show legacy character love bs”. Especially when he and every other legacy characters get hoed down.) His final win comes from Ruri, and that was handed to him due to Ruri fighting against the brainwashing temporarily. And then loses to Zarc (where that whole duel was just a mess) and finally Yuya. But by far his worst loss, that I didn’t mention, took place in his second duel with Sora. A duel that I wouldn’t be surprised if most, if not all, straight up forgot about. And this duel was a showcase of Shun eventual downfall. Not only did Shun lose to Sora, despite already defeating him at his best. And despite the duel somehow lasting overnight, it ends around turn five at most (the whole event is confusing to explain). But they make it seem that Shun did not stand a chance against Sora anymore and just losses. Shun as a duelist and character were done so dirty in Arc V. Frankly, if they didn’t gave the legacy characters such a crap performance. Than Shun would had been described as Arc V most tragic character and talked about way more. And keep in mind, I actually dislike Shun. Yeah I found him quite bratty and a huge edge lord at the start, which I did not like. I get it, but his character is just not it for me. But even then, I think his treatment was horrible.

Aoi VS Specter: Honestly I never cared about Aoi, I think she shouldn't be in the show at all, at least with the background story they gave her. Characters from the Lost Incident would be much interesting. I'm okay with Specter defeating her considering at that point none of the Knights of Hanoi had a win, even their leader already lost to Playmaker, they needed that win. That being said I think Revolver was done dirty since they made him duel the protagonist early in the season twice, and lost once and they still expects you to believe PM could be defeated in the Tower arc. Serena VS Yugo: Serena was done dirty, but really this duel didn't make me think that. Alexis VS Yuri: Alexis was done dirty but she wasn't a character I cared about at all even in GX so I just watched the duel and liked it. Not a favourite duel, but better than some of the end of the show. Edo and Kaito: One disappointment I had with legacy characters was that they only dueled Arc V characters, we didn't got Edo VS Kaito but we got them teaming up against Hugo and Joeri. Aster got the worse part, and Kaito had a quest to save his family just for his family to never appear. Team 5D's VS Team Unicorn: when I first watched that duel I didn't mind that T5D's won because from what I recall TU tricked them before the duel as part of their plan which showed poor sportsmanship in my eyes even if it was strategic. Nowadays it's clear that duel writting can be improved in a lot of ways.

You know what most of these instances in this video have in common? All except for one (Go Rush) had Shin Yoshida involved because he was the head writer. While I might question Rovian cheated with Yudias yeah still not cool. Plus did it matter that Team 5Ds lost in the first round of the WTGPrix? No because team Team Unicorn was still able to move on after the fact but heaven forbid Yusei loses I guess.
