I had a customer that would always come to buy fish for his office tank, which had losses due to neglect. Sold him a pair of convicts without telling him their name- told him the pair would fill the tank. They did of course and for years in the waiting room of a highly respected defense lawyer was a tank full of convicts.

Good video. I went fishing once. Caught a yellow belly catfish. He weighed about 1 3/4 pounds. About 10 inches long. I took him home in a bucket and put him in my 75 gallon tank. He lived for 8 years, 7 pounds and about 19 inches long. He became VERY docile. Loved to be hand fed. He would also let you pet him. It was a sad day when he died.

Great info, made the Pleco mistake when I first started and stayed away from Discus due to their maintenance requirements and costs, I never had any interest in the South American Cichlids used to run community tanks for a long time even switched back and forth a few times with Cichlid tanks - Finally settled on African Cichlids because of the lower maintenance and their hardiness. Used to buy chemicals and additives, this used to cost a fortune. About 15 years ago I settled on a filtration system that just works for me and my Cichlids and keeps the costs at a minimum 1 - the usual coarse sponge filters, 2 - a layer or bio rings 3 - a layer of finer sponges, 4 - a water polishing layer of polyester pillow stuffing (from Walmart) 5 - and finally some rechargeable API ammo chips. So now I do my weekly water changes and monthly filter maintenance consist of - clean the sponges, change the water polishing stuffing and exchange for a recharged Ammo Chips bag. Now my costs a about $10 every 4 years or so for pillow stuffing and $3 every 4 years for pickling/kosher/sea salt to recharge the Ammo Chips - no other water treatments or chemicals. Have about 20 Cichlids and 6 plecos in my 75 gal bowfront - anywhere from 2 to 8 inches long

My favorite tropical fish in the Discus. They graceful, beautiful and intelligent. They don't do well in a rushed busy packed community aquarium. They don't like it at all. They prefer to just be with other Discus. They are rather shy until they get to know you. You can see them, they can see you. Eventually they will come up eat blood worms out of your hand

As someone who works at a Petco, and is a hobbyist as well, I tell people to do their own cleaning, and not expect an animal to solve it for them. I mean one can have an effective scavenger/algae eater team without a "sucker" fish or Chinese algae "eater" that will grow way too big and throw out a lot of ammonia as well. Problem is that people these days are too lazy, and have insane expectations.

At 17 years old, my first job was Petsmart (2004). For the most part, it was tiring but VERY rewarding, and I LOVED learning about the hundreds of species of fish we'd sell. They were one of my favorite aspects of the job, as well as birds. I kept many fish as a teen, and aside from so many goldfish and bettas and fancy little community tanks even my parents enjoyed me setting up in the living room, my babies and true finny loves were Oscars. I certainly made some mistakes, but I loved those huge destructive aquatic puppies. Brilliant and funny, so fun to feed, I could even teach them some tricks. If I could ever own them again, have a bigger setup than I did back then, I would get oscars again. And if not them, Koi. Koi are, in my opinion, a good alternative... so long as you have room. And a GOOD filtration system. lol As for other Cichlids, I would NEVER suggest them in general to new tank owners. They're messy, aggressive, and they'll design the tank layout how THEY want it. Like oscars, they need a LOT of respect, patience, and awareness. Also... never get them decorations with tiny holes not MEANT for them to hide in. 50/50 chance they'll hide, get stuck, and die, either by their own mistake or yours when you rearrange when you go looking for them.

I just found your channel and it's nice to listen to you both. I poorly had to give up this hobby several years ago cause I got too sick to take care for it and my teenager kids didn't want to do all the work. who could blame them :) but what I was just wondering: doesn't the vendors get into a conversation with you when you buy fish? when I started here in Germany I was looking around and got interested in any fish I got asked about the tank size, the fish I already have and they told me which size my tank has to be at least to keep this fish. this was really nice and helpful. In the beginning you are totally overwhelmed and might mess up on your own by putting wrong ones together etc. And if the vendor didn't feel well he wouldn't have sold the fish to the customer.

I'm so glad I like schooling fish... That helped me avoid many pitfalls, I think! In my 28 gallon tank the largest fish are a couple of bristlenoses - and the second-largest are White Cloud Mountain minnows... And yeah, perhaps I dream of one day getting a large tank and some larger fish, but for now I'm still very much in love with my little minnows. (And okay, so a second tank mysteriously happened a few months after the first - but it was CHEAP, and 8½ gallons fit nicely on my desk. And the seller needed to rehome a female betta for free and threw in some plants for her as well, so that was that tank stocked!) (Okay, a third tank happened - BUT THAT WAS BY ACCIDENT! Found it in the trash, so a free tank doesn't count, right? Anyway, at 4½ gallons it's probably not going to be ideal for a pacu, don't worry.)

I remember my very first fish tank, the fish were bought at Wal-Mart and the lady convinced my mum to get a pleco (thankfully just one!) and she swore up and down by it, that it would keep the tank clean. That guy pooped more than all the other fish did, and when it became evident he was not going to stop growing, he was quite the ordeal to find a new home for! Decades later and I return to the hobby, happy with my little bristlenose, fully aware he's just a very cute poop factory :)

I had a pleco when I first started years ago- I wasn’t told by the store how big they get even after asking and telling them my tank size etc (I was very new so wasn’t on fish forums or watching videos at that point) and after trying everything and spending a tonne of money trying to solve the problem I sadly lost him, I’ve since been keeping fish with loads of knowledge and successfully have beautiful tropical discuss and cichild tanks (your videos have helped loads throughout the years!) but I don’t think I’d get a pleco again just because of my (and the the poor pleco’s) experience! Thanks for educating new fish keepers- I wish I’d seen this years ago!!

I can totally relate with convict cichlids. I first bought a 20 gallon tank and planned to buy a betta sorrority when the tank has been cycled. But, the supplier of the tank brought freebies of 12 convicts because he said they're the easiest to keep and so i can observe and familiarize fish keeping hobby (i felt so sorry for them I cycled my tank for only 12 hrs but thankfully they survived). Oh I thought, how thoughtful of him. Then, just 2 months after I had them, I was shocked I saw a tadpole-like swimmers in my tank and the pair got the other convicts terrorized. I had to buy another big tank to separate the other convicts. I immediately sell the other grown convicts. The fry grew, I sold some and I gave away most of them.

Great list, and I totally agree. Bad story coming... I had gotten into fish keeping at 9 years old. My brother, who was 6, also wanted to get a pet fish. So our mom took us to the LFS. I got some guppies or platies, you know, easy peaceful fish. My brother got a single bala shark for the same reason you talk about in the video: he wanted a shark! Unfortunately the poor shark went into a half gallon fish bowl. Yep. Half gallon. No heat, no filter, and no proper care. I don't remember how long it lived. Maybe a week or so. To this day I still don't know why the LFS even sold it to us. Maybe they didn't ask what it was going into, I don't know. I just always felt so bad for that poor fish. :( Also... the convict thing is spot on. I got a pair about 10 years later (and was working at PetSmart), so I was no beginner, and I had a 20 gallon tank set up just for the breeding pair I had. I did love seeing them spawn and take care of their brood, but never could find anywhere to give away the babies. So I'd leave them in there... they'd grow... and then around the time the next batch was due the parents would eat them all. It got to be sort of heartbreaking, so I ended up giving the pair away as well. I really hope your video deters some people from getting these fish!

That way if you want one and you have a big enough place for them you can get them that way. I understand the Oscar one completely 😂 I got lucky because I learned from my grandma's, so I knew what I was in for. I love my "freshwater garbage disposal" puppy fish. I actually had to seperate my 2 current ones. My normal Tiger was beating up my albino "Red". Needless to say my side and husband understood, my father in law was like are you serious, another big @$$ tank in the house? 😂😂😂

I loved my dad and I’s 2 plecos. We had them for 12 years in a 180 gallon tank. When our family moved cross country we gave the fish up to another fish keeper since moving with them would have been too hard. All of the fish in that tank were super old. We had 2 redhook silver dollars that were 18 years old.

I have a dumb question. I'm in the process of setting up a new aquarium. I tested the ph of my tap water and it was around 7.2. But I also tested the ph of my aquarium that I just put dechlorinated tap water into and it was like 7.6. Why is the ph so different? Could it be from my hands when setting up plants and all that?
@arthurheine5631
@arthurheine5631 3 года назад
The pH of tap water changes after some days, so it could be that. Make sure you test the pH after some time of the water sitting. It also could be because of your substrate. I often have my new tanks fluctuate to basic pH after adding substrate or setting up with new substrate, with an exception of fertile substrate for plants. It usually goes away once the tank matures. Good luck and make sure you cycle your tank before adding fish!

Oscars are my favorite. I kept a Florida Gar, Red Belly Pacu and tiger Oscar. They all got along great. 8 years. Sadly Katrina hurricane wiped my home and everything in it to a slab. Never recovered really. But I miss my drums and my fish most.

Wow. 55lb. My red belly only got in the time I had him 6 to 8 years about 2lbs. Same as my Tiger Oscar and Gar. They all are well. I spent alot on tank upkeep. It was my first and only aquarium hobbie attempt. My Oscar would pout. Nobody believed me until they saw when I would leave for work or come home. He would splash the moment the door opened. Until I pet his head on the tank and fed him his extra float pellets. Hahaha. My pacu and Gar were attentive as well and tho not as happy to see me they did get serious around feeding time. If I ever missed or was late feeding the pacu would nip gar tail. That was why I bought a 50 gal for feeders alone. I never bred feeders but many times I'd get a egger and they'd appear thousands. Hahaha. Hahaha. Anyway. Cool channel. I better be careful. I don't want to redo this. A grown man cried when I lost those 3 kiddos.

Haha I absolutely love my two huge common plecos but yes you are absolutely right about them getting large and them not being a tank cleaning problem solver. I usually keep mine in my 300 gallon pond outside during the summer. Right now I have them inside in my 110 gallon just for the winter because they do NOT like the water below 65 degrees despite what everyone says about them being fine in 60 degrees. Always research your fish before committing to them

This channel has the best most honest and transparent advice. I learn so much. Thank you. Beginners tend to buy small tanks. In not only that they don't know but they start with a small tank. Therefor certain fish will not work. Friends saw all my tanks and went out to buy a 5 Gallon tank and added gold fish to it. I mentioned to them.gold fish is not a good idea for a 5 Gallon as per what I've learned as a beginner. But they still going for it as our big bug store advise them to do so.

My first tank had 3 of these fish although I did have a large tank, I had the Pleco ,2 Oscars (loved those guys) Bala Sharks that I gave to a friend because I just did not like them too much and replaced the Balas with 2 Jack Dempsey. I read about all these and gave it a go and had success with some speed bumps for about 16 years with that tank. The oscars were like dogs greeting me at the door and I would drop food right in their mouths.

THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN. I got my fish tank on Craigslist (75gallon) dirty as can be for 50 bucks. it had 7 plecos, a blood parrot, some other kind of cichlid, 13 feeder fish twice the size of the blood parrot, like 10 fancy guppies, and a few more odds and ends. Majority of fish all had ich, and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to clean up. I was up 18 hours straight deep washing the tank and (was apparently used for a turtle before??), put all these fish in quarantine in numerous buckets and tanks throughout my home for a few weeks. I was able to save all of them except for the mystery cichlid and 3 plecos, and was able to re-home all of what I didn't feel could fit in the tank. Take care of your fish people

My 1st fish was 6 Silver arowanas... My parents bought them together with a 75 gallon tank, 4 only survived because we didn't know they jump out of aquariums (this was 25 years ago and still no internet). The 4 managed to grew around 1 ft to a little more than that, at that time we already bought a second 75 gallon tank since they where getting big, unfortunately went to college and nobody was tending them and got fungus... Then second batch of fishes we got was Oscars and Pacus, together with a 100 gallon tank, they stayed for a couple of years and grew around 8 inches for the oscars, while the pacus where massive as a plate 😅, but they only want live feed and availability of these live feeds become scarce in our area, we tried feeds but didn't want it, tried other insects, didn't want it... Fast forward after these fishes, just settled for Koi's, they are hearty and easier to manage. Also have Bala sharks, the petshop owner gave them away us, but didn't last long.

When I was 16 I started my fish addiction! At 34, I still had my clown knife, who I bought at 3 inches at 16 and had u til I was 36, he died at over 2 ft long. He was almost 28 inches long. Throughout his life, he jumped out the tank 3 times. Luckily, I was home and saved him all 3 times. Once was n middle of the night and I heard him flapping. He landed all the way across the living room. My oscars were huge too. My arrowana was humongous also. I had them all over 20 yrs. It was hard losing them. Now, 10 yrs later, I'm getting fish again. My oscars r babies and so is my clown knife. It's a love for fish I developed early on in life. They r beautiful creatures! I had a 250 gallon tank. Thanks for ur videos!

I had a good teacher, and knew that nothing else would survive in the tank, but this setup worked well for me with the Oscars patrolling the top and the convicts digging up holes for breeding at the bottom. And the Oscars helped keep the convict population in check.

I have to agree that Oscar's have the coolest personalities and be really territorial in their tank. I don't know if i had a male or female fish but it was my favorite animal growing up and it lived fore over 8 years and one night it managed to jump out of the tank while we were sleeping and he unfortunately had expired by the time I seen that the tank was empty he was in a 75 gallon tank and he was absolutely 13 inches long and probably weighed close to 4 pounds. I live by a lake and I remember lots of times bringing home a little fish and to put in the tank with him and I knew that he would probably not have it. He was so territorial one winter after he was over a year old we put a glass water warmer and it had a red light on the inside of it the oscar started getting angry and turning red orange and thrashing fast as possible splashing out around a quat of water.I believe that he was able to grow a little bit bigger than average due to the diet he had become acquainted with including worms, crickets, crawfish, and small fish.

I had a pair of convicts but they managed to be the worse parent fish I ever had so almost none would survive, they were painted pinks, mostly white with very few stripes on them. My blood parrots could never spawn because they are sterile but always tried. I decided to try an experiment of taking the brand new eggs from my convicts and moving it to my blood parrots nest, was not easy the parrots where very big and very protective. I had to have my fiancé distract these 2 fish when it was time to make the switch and move quickly, it somehow worked. But they were not dumb either if the fry were natural colored they would eat them but if they stayed the white or yellow tones they would raise them. I would only do this a few times until my female parrot sadly passed away, but still got the big guy. But I always warm people if they buy more then 1 convict and get a male and female get ready for fishageddon.

Been seeing "dinosaur eels" in box stores. While I love Senegal bichirs, I cringe when I see them in the box stores. Like Oscar's most don't realize they are getting a large predatory fish. I had one about 11inches long who would eat just about anything 4-5 inches and under. Which knocks out most common easy to keep fish.

Hi there . So I am a beginner in fishkeeping . I want to only keep one small tank right now I have a 10 gallon and the biggest I would go is a 15 gallon. I have two pet parrots that I love dearly and they will always be my priority . Of course this doesn’t mean that I care about all animals and want my fish to live long healthy lives . I recently saw a pea puffer at a pet store and LOVE it . It’s so cute ! However I was sad to realize the more I researched that it is not really a beginner fish . However , I like it enough to be willing to only house 1 pea puffer in my 10 gallon even though it was originally going to be a mixed community tank . Is there a way to care for this creature in a good way while still saving money and time or is it completely off the table for a beginner who gives a quality care to two exotic animals already ? I was thinking of keeping most of its food source in the tank breeding to be a permanent source such as breeding tiny snails in the tank , and brine shrimp so less money on live food . Any advice ?

Can you do a top 5 or top 10 big beginner fish? Not really fish that are ideal for beginners, but fish you recommend starting out with once people start keeping fish that are bigger than your average community fish like angels, goldfish, oscars (because we all know you love those), blood parrots, etc.
