15:12 Is this money? 15:24 Who ever wants to eat then come out. 15:46 Come out to see 15:46 They are here to take picture the mountains and of people who are in a different country 15:57 They are carrying something 15:57 They are carrying those to give it away to people so they can video tape people 15:57 That's right! 16:02 If you are going to video tape me, then you will have to give me money. 16:11 Taking pictures means giving money. Please translate in Laos language to her. 16:15 She said, do you want a face covering? 16:17 I am asking for money 16:27 Tell the Laos lady that I am asking for money 16:32 Come if you want pencil for your children for school 17:03 Go tell them, who ever wants candy. Come out here to monitor. 18:23 Who ever wants candy, then accept that paper. Who ever wants candy then accept it. 18:54 They said it's free, it's poison! 19:01 Does he know you? 19:53 They might call us, Getto Hmong People. 20:25 Go ask them for some laundry detergent. 20:30 He is American, he doesn't know. 21:05 You have a lot in there. 21:08 I want something different 21:09 You want me to grab one? Okay 21:11 I'm grabbing this one then The old lady was just joking. It's something Hmong people say but don't really mean it. If you give her money, she will be happy. If not, it's not serious. People in the Hmong culture say this as a joke sometimes. It's just good etiquette to ask for permission before recording anyone. It's a typical joke any old lady will say. They even say those jokes in the United States. The old lady was actually helping by spreading the word and telling others to accept the gifts, to come out, etc. The old man is just looking out for the villagers. Why he said it's poison, it’s because they don't know who you are. All of a sudden, a strange white man show up in a pickup truck with a Laos lady. They are going to be cautious. You have to know, these people lived through war where people come in friendly but poison the people, rape their women and children, and kill the men. They are just being cautious. When the old lady handed you the cucumber, it is actually a sign of thank you! Or appreciation. Hmong elders don't say, "thank you!" or "I love you" but they express it through actions! If they cook for you or feed you, that means they like you and appreciate you. Hmong people eat cucumber when they are traveling far distance. It's actually a thoughtful gift for your trip. If you look at the man who was carrying the baby, you can see the smile on his face. This means, he is really happy and glad you stop by their town. It's great, you handed the lady who was carrying the naked bum kid a bag of goodies because she did not know how to ask you for it. She actually just wanted a bag of goodies too. I just want to say, Thank you! For visiting the Hmong people and having a open heart. They are kind people, the more you visit and build a rapport, the more inviting they will become. If you need a place to stay or sleep for the night. Ask one of them, they will accommodate you and cook you a good lavish meal. You just don't know how much respect Hmong people have for the white man but also know the white man had betrayed the Hmong people before so the elder man is just reminding them not to let their guard down but other Hmong people did not really care because - if you are a kind person, they will know and accept the gifts from you. My mom told me how difficult it was when she was living in Laos. Having laundry detergent, shampoo, soap, etc. These things we take for granted is really difficult to obtain living only with the limited income of a farmer. They use only small amounts and make sure it last them a long time. Again, thank you for having a kind heart and visiting the Hmong people.

Sia Lao... Thank you so much for the in-depth translation. Very helpful. Even though I could not understand what the old lady was saying, I did understand her character, and what a character she was! It was a great surprise to receive the cucumber from her knowing it was her way of thanking us. I can totally understand why these people are very wary of outsiders, but thankfully, they did warm to us in the end.. 🙏

this is heart warming information there's so much we don't understand one culture to another . years ago I was a young 20 something year old and I and my brother lived in a serious fixer upper home amongst a Mong community that was in the US Sacramento California, we lived next to many Mong people and met a American social worker his job was to help the Mong people understand the differences and help them adjust to a somewhat different way of living . He told us the Mong people were not used to stoves that they would some times even prefer to cut a big hole in the floor so they could build a fire and BBQ wow I wish now I knew what I know now I would and could have learned by getting to know these neighbors.my brother was invited to have dinner with our Mong neighbor and he shared with me that after dinner the father brought out a bamboo bong so my brother being a American 20 something early 80s guy thought WTF is this really happening but then he told me they hit tobacco through this bong which was still a cool experience. there's so much we can learn about people if we slow down and take the time to understand overall people are kind and sharing

My wife (Hmong from Northern Laos) giggled a little as she watched and listened to the older lady. She (the old lady) said that you should give her money for taking her picture. She also told the other ladies that if they came out that you would take their picture too. Later she told the others that if they came out you'd give them treats. Cherish that cucumber...that was a beautiful gift she gave back. Seng already explained the concern they have about photographs. The deeper into the jungle you go, the more cautious you should be.

The old woman at 15:40 is very cautious and wants to know why you guys are in the village. The younger woman replies to her that you are there to take pictures of people and the countryside. The old woman warns her to be careful of strangers (that is not entirely clear because Neenee spoke over her). The old woman then tells the other villagers that if you are going to take pictures of her, you need to pay her first. That is why she is motioning to her face, not to ask for a mask. The old woman is typical of the older generation because they do not trust outsiders. At 17:08, she says to everyone that if the children wants any candy, they should come now.

Todd, good to see you’re doing well. The older lady in pink just wanted money. She said if you take my picture you have to give me money. She doesn’t understand that you’re just there to help and bring gifts. One thing I would caution you on is filming the Hmong people in their villages. Hmong people who still follow old traditions believe that if you film or take picture of them, you’re taking their soul and trapping it in the picture/film. It would be good if you ask first before you film them. Most Hmong people in who live in bigger villages or town don’t believe that anymore. Don’t want you get into any trouble over it. Love the content! Keep it coming!

Awhile back there was a donation (from Hmong-Americans) going to an injured Hmong-Laotian teen and his village got angered at the donors that why they only gave to him and not them, or something like that - only hear from my sister. i don't know why but Hmong in Laos and Vietnam always beg for money. my grandma has some relatives (her sister's children) in Laos and always begged for money even though they have a rubber plantation and other farmlands. about 6-8 yrs ago, my parents, uncles, and aunts kept telling her to stop sending money whenever they ask so my grandmother stopped - don't know if she secretly give it to one of my aunts to send to them because that aunt still has a connection with them. one thing is that we barely even have any connection with them until we're going to emigrate to the US in 2005 and they (my grandmother's sister, brothers-in-law, and their children) came to the Wat Thamkrabot camp and found my grandmother. so ever since we got here until 6-8 yrs ago, my grandmother's sister and her children always begged for money. Same for those old Hmong-Americans that has boyfriend or girlfriend in Laos. regarding Hmong in Vietnam, especially those in touristy places, Hmong women will purposely tagging along with you until to give them money to leave you alone. happened to my parents and their friends on their trip in 2018 and co-workers of mine at work as well. Hmong that been to Vietnam always tell other Hmong to not speak any Hmong or those women will ask them to purchase Hmong - unfinished - clothes/cloth or just tagging along going everywhere with you until to pay them to leave. btw, my family has a bunch of relatives in Thailand - still live in the mountains of Thailand and other large Hmong villages- and they rarely ask/beg for money. most of the time, they ask if they can ship stuff for us to sell so they can earn some money - like preparing for big events or festivals.

Hi Todd and Neenee. I'm Hmong and born in Laos but grew up here in the US. Yes, what AlohaJonny stated below on what the old lady said is accurate. initially she questioned what you're all doing there in the village and the younger lady said it's just foreigner touring and taking pictures. Then that older lady is asking the other lady to tell you two that if her picture is taken, she would like to get compensated with money. I'm laughing. Remote Hmong people are not very used to foreigners, that' all. No worries. Makes me feel like I want to go with you two and translate and mediate questions like this. :)
