As the owner of a '77 Datsun 620 project, I can assure you that it is also a small truck and I get questions/yelled at in traffic every single time I drive it lol
The REPU is perfectly capable of doing most things people think they need an F150 for. With intake and exhaust mods the stock block 13b will make 160hp to the wheels. In comparison to just about any minitruck of the 70s the REPU is a rocket. Unfortunately the ‘77 model you tested came with a very tall final drive ratio but earlier models are better in that regard. They can keep up with traffic when loaded up. The only shortcoming is the sparse interior and non-vented front disc brakes. I’ve had mine 10+ years and use it regularly for truck stuff, trips to home centers, the transfer station, hauling bikes around, even towing the occasional trailer.
As anti american as you put it, the tundra and Tacoma sells mighty well today. They have tried small trucks and those still lived on in Europe or SE Asian countries. Mitsubishi trucks and Toyota Hilux are still household names out there.
