Bro let’s be real here people are so delusional nowadays to think you need over 1000 hp to have a good time. It’s bananas that people think this way or even to daily drive a 1000 plus car or truck.
Those 5.7 vortec engines were damn good work horses. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the fuel injection system that they used but they are definitely 500k engines. The transmission on the other hand that is a different story.
Yup, I got that 4L60E in two rigs, an 88 S10 Blazer and a 97 Tahoe, I've had to replace or rebuild that POS 3 times in 10ish years across two vehicles, they definitely ain't great
I rebuilt my 4l60 and add a b&m street and strip shift kit with the red shift solenoids out of a corvette and hasn’t give me a problem since running on three years but in low rpm shifts it does feel like your head might snap off 😂
I have 3 OBS pickups. They all have the o.g 60e, over 600k miles between the 3, none of them been rebuilt. All serviced @ 30k miles and they all have a big trans cooler. I've pulled my race car/trailer with my 96 Z71 since 1999 lol. Most people don't believe it but my uncle bought it new in Feb 96, and it's the o.g trans. He bought a new 99 Z71 Silverado in 99 and I bought it with 19k miles. It has 188k now, still hanging in there. My other 2 OBS trucks are still shifting fine as well. I guess I've been lucky because so many people break them. I also have a 72 c10 with a 6.0/4l80e swap, I definitely wouldn't put 500 hp in front of a 60e, that's a disaster waiting to happen. I've always treated my trucks like an old horse, ride it easy and pray she makes it back to the barn.
Head gasket blew in my original one on my two door Tahoe so I got a new 5.7 vortec from summit racing but the one I picked up has an extra hundred horsepower over the stock factory one from the dealership. So I know I'm going to be happy once it's in 350 hp stock. After I add a set of headers, intake manifold, tune, should be approaching 400hp
Just remember that these 5.7 vortrec 350s "4bolt main " only came in the 3/4 ton n 1 ton trucks from midyear 1995 to june 2002 from a truck to a full size van ..GMC savanna's n Chevy express n 2500 n 3500 trucks gmt400 platform...the 1/2 ton trucks n vans like the tahoes burbans single cabs only came with 2 bolt main blocks. Good short vid thank you for your incredible insight..
Straight up,you have found your calling in life. I enjoy your shorts. Please keep it up Merry Christmas brother! Oh, I’m one of those Cummins 24 valve guys(basically stock😂)
Im going 406 with a big cam and Chevy performance heads. I already have the super victor intake from my 305ho that I'm going to run. It's gonna be fun in my 2nd gen s10
And the second fact the best part of the vortec is the fact that it has cheap high-flowing cast iron heads if you're buying brodex head you might as well start with an old school high nickel block with an actual 4 bolt Main and a forged crankshaft
I was looking for a comment like this. It only makes sense to keep the vortec heads. All the old school sbc guys want those heads and for a good reason. They just flow well as is, especially well with a little bit of porting.
Lol “high nickel” blocks….a proven myth! The amount of difference in nickel was so minimal that it didn’t make any structural difference! It’s been proven many times throughout the years. And older Vortec blocks are 4 bolt mains(depending) plus they are factory roller blocks and already have the best factory high flowing heads, which actually out flow a lot of aftermarket heads with the same specs!
I'm currently building an 86 monte carlo, 383 stroker with a 64cc combustion chamber and eagle crank rods and pistons, 195cc intake and If I recall correctly 210cc exhaust, a comp cams 12-600-4, a full exhaust and a bunch of other goodies. I'm estimating 425 whp and 425 wft-lbs of torque. Mostly inspired by your videos. Thank you for doing so much for the car community
I love this guy. If you have the money this dude is your guy, you don't need to do no research he just makes videos and you listen and then buy the parts lol
@whiteAfrikkkanNun The Bible says, “Building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” -Jude 20. Speaking in tongues stimulates faith and helps us learn how to trust God more fully. For example, faith must be exercised to speak with tongues because the Holy Spirit specifically directs the words we speak.
There's nothing wrong with working with the small block Chevy, and the 350 vortec is a good foundation to work with. The LS guys who hate on the 350 are full of it! Not every Chevy guy has to have an LS to go fast. The small block Chevy isn't dead.
Exactly i laugh at the LS guys that put stock Ls motors in stuff just to get 300hp because they think its so hard to get 300hp from a sbc yet a stock L31 dynoes 300hp anyways and the sbc is cheaper to build NA up to 500hp
i have people tell me all the time what i should have built or i should have used an ls then they ride in mine and they say theyve never rode in anything like that. sounds like a good reason why its better i did what i did. even the ls fan boys with their ls swap get smoked by me. one of the more surprising ones was a turbo one everyone was oogling at a car meet. he tried racing me after wards and he never spoke to me again. its hard to argue with the usefulness of the sbc when ls motor makes peak torque between 3000-5000 rpms. they say its better in every way but when hauling a load i dont think neutral dropping it is the way to get moving.
The man speaks the truth, i was all set to do an Ls swap on my IROC until i got talked out of it by my local engine Gurus. They told me that for what i was going to spend on putting a 6.0 in the car i could have a nice reliable 4-500 hp deal and be able to get parts off the shelf at autozone(i love Ls engines im not bashing them). The guys gave me a recipe and then i went parts hunting and sure enough, even with them rebuilding my short block i came in under what the 6.0 swap was going to run 👍
Vortecs are also the main motor for crate circle track racing classes part numbers 604 is a aluminum head steel block 450-500HP vortex made for oval racing with seal bolts where you can't cheat and the 602 one is steel head steel block making 350-400 HP depending on the carb setup and ignition and headers ECT. Put a vdl built holly on your vortex 350
Vortec heads are good, the l31 truck motor you show I had couple, not much fan of the maxe injection with plastic fuel lines running under Platinum, they fixed that when 5.3 6.0 came out in 99
This guy really makes these projects seem like they don’t take a year lol, but hey I suppose if it gets people motivated to work on cars. It sure does me!
@@Coronet_shop but the L31 came factory with a 1053 forged crankshaft Mahle hyperteutic pistons and PM connecting rods but it is a old 23 degree head design but I put a Edelbrock Performer Rpm Top End kit 2098,6089 heads and it dynoes at 410 hp 408 ft lbs with a 9.5:1 compression stock short block
And that's how it starts. Built motor then you burn the trans up. Get that rebuilt and a little beefed up then you ruin the rear-end. Then after you get 373 gears in it, you twist the drive shaft out of it. Never stop throwing money at it.
Funny you said that about Holley I had one and rebuilt it a couple times was always a pain in the ass Plan on trying a edelbrok if I ever need one again Or better yet I’d love to have a old Ron Chester qaudrajet Some people call them qaudrajunk and I’m not expert but I’ve had a Holley 4 barrel land plenty of problems Let just say you had to kno how to drive my car or you’d be stuck in the middle of the road stalled and flooded Good call on the small block motor 383 stroker
He has a project car he’s trying to put together, but look at Richard Holdner.. He does mild to wild builds for a living, but drives a 200k mile 4.8L Chevy work truck that’s bone stock lol..
@tallonenriquez1373 bulletproof your transmission, clutch too if a standard, tougher internals, better gear ratios for sure so you can use all that power. And also rear diff needs to be built up to handle that power so you don't blow it trying to hook up on a launch.
Glad I came across this short and that you mentioned the l31 Vortec. We have two strokers built off of these blocks. One still uses the fuel injection. SRP Dish piston. 6.00 H beams 3.750 forged cranks. 9.3:1 CR -210 profiler aluminum heads single plane 750 Holley carb big hydraulic roller .599 int .618 exh. 3800 stall 4.88 gear 12 bolt in a 3300lb - 3400lb car low 7.20- 7.25 1/8 Mile very consistent street car. Will run off 93 cruising. Respondes better with the 110. Second is identical bottom end to the First other than a 4.000 bore with the 3.750 stroke for the crank and with the fuel injection system used for a truck. 98 k2500 Dart iron eagle Vortec heads 170cc Roller rockers Comp 4x4cam .474 .474 2200 stall and a cold air intake does good for hauling and towing and will move when you want it to. If we were to do another street car it would have a motor like what’s in the truck very mild cam and is friendly on the street but you can tell it can have an attitude. Figured I would help someone who reads the comments and your video help inspire me to do so. We have fun with both
I would love to give the kid a credit card and just let him build whatever type of guy wants to see what he comes up with its people like him that know bout the coolest shit
I followed you to see if my girl was cheating on me, stayed following when I realized you're a real car guy with real advice. Thanks bro. I'm working on my 02 newedge mustang.
You know what's funny I missed one on ebay back in 07 and it was a stick 2 weeks later got mine wondering yo was a dreaming never seen another 2dr tahoe stick since 😮
I just pulled out my built 96 L31 out of the 87 SS Monte that was an absolute dead reliable vehicle and ran 7.90s in the 660 on et streets and a 125 shot from 2nd gear out the back. On 93 octane, 3000 stall, mild cam, driven to the track and back home. With a more aggressive pill, on slicks, straight outta the hole on a 200-250 shot with some race gas and timing adjustments, it could have been a lot quicker. MANY a mustangs, Z28, SS, T/A 4th gen, and a lot of other local barely street cars got smoked and then we took the case of beer and the 20-100$ winnings and rode around the rest of the night bumping the system, 2x MTX 12s/amp, with the t tops out.
I had one in my 1997 gmc, put over 500,000 km on it. Never needed a rebuild. Changed the oil and the spark plugs regularly. Only bad thing was it had 1 injector for all 8 cylinders.
97 should be vortec with spider injectors, unless your calling the spider setup a single injector. Technically it is, but it splits off into 8 individual injectors.
I came here to see if anyone noticed that! Lol! The 96+ 5.7/350 are better everything than the 87-95/350. Their issues are mainly oil pump, intake gaskets, head gaskets and strange grounding issues for the engine effecting the tbi/temp sensor. If this is all sorted you've got a dependably great runner for many miles! I've been sorting their issues for well over 20yrs. Any decent machine shop/engine builder can drill/machine to a 4blt main. I currently have one in my shop for a project I'm building. Same thing can be done with a 4.3 as it's exactly the same but with 2 cylinders chopped off. Those can be lots of fun!
It's the corniest most generic commentary that is extremely elementary. Basically "if you put a big engine that has performance parts it'll make power and be fast" no shit Sherlock... Every video is a variation of the same crap. Can't believe people in comments says shit like " wow I'm writing this down for my next swap" like wtf?
Yes do the 8.1 Vortec I had one w an Allison behind it in a 01 Crew Cab Short bed 4x4 on 35s and it would smoke everything in town besides vettes newer stangs etc only had true duals from the cats back from 3 In to 2-1/2 all the way out the back 90’d out the side and tucked w a CAI and a redone transmission and 3:73 w locker. But it would fly! Only 117k on it when my grandfather gave her to me I miss it terribly great tough motors tho! Trust me!
I you have ever experienced a working Q-jet, its amazing. Small primaries with huge secondarys make for snappy acceleration. Central float bowl helps feed under hard cornering. It's almost perfect for flat track racing. IF you can find a working one.
5.7 Vortec’s do wonders with port matching the gaskets on intake and exhaust and a valve upgrade, I had one done like that and it would hang with the GDI 5.3’s all day long with the original spider injection unit and way more reliable
This is one of the most solid engines I’ve ever had I’ve blown head gaskets cracked heads that motor still lives I’m finally pulling it in going to tear down get it machined in 383 stroke that mfer
Keep everything stock, port the heads properly, good valve job, nice big roller cam, big single plain from e bay whatever carb you have laying around as long its around 750 or higher if you have a two bolt maybe studs, nice HC pistons, round 550 for 2000 bucks
I had one in my OBS Silverado when I bought it, but it didn't run right. Engine wouldn't Rev above idle and white smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. we figured the engine was shot, so my dad took it old school for me. carbed 4 bolt main 350 and th350 trans, because the trans was also bad. I also just picked up an 05 suburban Z71 4x4 to compliment the OBS Silverado
I got my 71 Camaro (632 C.I and 3L supercharger) for the fun car. And I tuned my 2009 Sonata to 400hp to help deal with those "Oh shit" moments driving in Indy. I prefer driving the grocery getter because it handles better on Indy roads and I can still getup and go when needed.
An 850 double pumper..... I had a 750 on a 2nd Gen camaro in the 90s. That was when gas was like a buck or so a gal and it was still expensive to be constantly filling the tank. It wasn't too too bad... Until you got on it and the secondaries kicked in. You could almost see the fuel gauge go down
Everybody's right about these kids not needing high horsepower numbers. My daily is a bone stock LS3 C6 Corvette, and it's fast there's no way around it, no b*******, it's fast
Can't wait to drop a 5.3 vortec in my 1990 obs chevy single cab 4x4..that would be a nasty combo and I ain't trying to race it's my work truck,it pulls my 12' pressure wash rig with a 275 gallon tank..350 hp in that light truck would be plenty to make my towing easier..
I love this guy. I had an IROC-Z as a kid and I would read through the Edelbrock magazines and just do mental wishlists of all the bolt-ons I’d put on my L88 5.7 TPI haha. Never happened. But it was fun to dream.
Where are you finding four bolt main Vortec blocks? I’ve built 3, torn apart 5 turned down guys who tried to sell me “4 bolt main” motor once I made them pull the pan and see that it was indeed a two bolt. There were very few 4 bolt main Vortecs. I’d heard they were put in the 2500 vans but occasionally found in the 3500 trucks. But for as many times as I’ve been told it was a four bolt I’ve never seen a 4 bolt main Vortec. I do have a 4 bolt main 400 but that was only made for 2 years by gm before it was discontinued because it made the block weaker.
