Having lived in Alaska for part of my life, I’ve seen my share of giant pumpkins and cabbages from the Matanuska Valley. Giant pumpkin growing is great, but how about a challenge that urban gardeners with smaller spaces could participate in? Sunflowers worked because they grow tall, not wide, but giant pumpkins are another story lol.

My grandmother use to put hers in a pillow case and she would dip out what she needed... However........ me personally would not use that practice because we have "Frost Free" and it dried out mine when I tried it. I would think that it works better in a freezer that has to be defrosted as apposed to frost free. Frost Free is a real dry cold and that's what causes freezer burn. Love y'all's videos and look forward to every time I get notified. 😁

Last season, I planted the California Blackeye. I have planted them many times over my lifetime but, I will have to say that they make enormous bushes and will reach out and choke just about everything around them. They found my tomato trellis and wanted to climb it. Wide spacing strongly recommended. Super delicious picked green with about 1/3 snaps, blanch and freeze. Great with bacon fat added, as with just about anything else, always better with bacon fat.

I remember an old gardener, who used to win the county fair prize for the biggest pumpkin. He told me that his secret was that he’d bury a big jar in the soil next to his selected pumpkin and he’d fill that jar with milk every day and put a wick in it which led to a small slit in the stem... So, essentially, a milk-fed pumpkin. Have you ever heard of this?

I plant several types. I have Mississippi Purple Hull, regular store bag Black Eyed (cheap to plant and they grow fine), and I just ordered Red Ripper...for over 8 bucks for 80 seeds, so I will certainly be saving seeds of those and the Purple Hulls, because they were expensive to order. I`m poor, no car, tiny fixed income, living way out in the Louisiana boondocks, so for me this is truly about survival. I have a giant real ham I`m cutting up and saving in small bags to season my peas, green beans, and greens. I just moved here and also planted peas to begin the slow process of building this really bad soil that was ruined by those who lived here before. I invested my savings in this camper, a nice roof, and solar batteries so I can save my freezer food, have power for a tiny air conditioner after storms, and have a non gas power supply for a weedeater and tiller. My batteries and inverter are heavy but can be taken by garden wagon to my sunny Winter garden area 200 yards away. I also keep at least 100 pounds of rice here and between 40 and 50 pounds of dry beans, 20 lbs of grits, dry butter, dry milk, pasta, salt, flour, and plenty of sugar and yeast for wine. I also have indoor gardens to ensure Winter lettuce, peppers, etc.

How long can you keep the tomatoes in the tray before planting?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 года назад
Usually about 6-7 weeks in these trays.

Do your ball caps have the snap fasteners, metal clasps or are they fitted. The metal clasps kind give me a headache.

Not metal clasps. They have the plastic snap, adjustable fasteners.

Nope. They should be somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean on a boat right now. At least 4 more weeks.

I see you are in GA. Are your seeds from GA also, or do you source them from all over? I ordered this year's seeds from a place that I found on a 'best seeds for growing in the south' page. Turns out they came from Oregon. lol. Anywho... this fall and beyond is another story. I'd like to source my seeds from plants that grow in the south. Thx.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 года назад
You won't find any. The seed trade is an international one. I don't know of any seed crops grown in the south. The ones that are grown in the US are usually grown on the west coast.

@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks for the honesty. I appreciate it. You could have said yeah man... all of our seeds come from plants just a few hours down the road from you. lol. I get the feeling I know what you mean by international. I have ran across seeds from those sources on multiple occasions and didn't want to take the chance. And still don't.

Where can I get that shirt? love it (rad-ish...have plenty of the other type). Seriously though, the bottom watering is being promoted all over. People think they can reinvent the wheel sometimes... and doing more harm than they are good.

I don't have those items either. Probably going to have to figure a way to get mine in the truck and take it the local farmers market to weight it.

I heard some old gardener say one time, if you grow pumpkins before July, they will rot. Is that true?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 года назад
Not at all. You can grow Seminole or Cherokee Tan pumpkins in spring and they'll store for up to a year sometimes. The pepo varieties like the jack-o-lantern types don't store very well, but the edible pumpkins usually store very well.
