@@Cenlalowell I disagree. If they are used to X amount of money every year then suddenly it goes way down there is a big difference. Plus it makes bad pres for Amsterdam.
@@Cenlalowell That's cool. I don't support any economy that doesn't value me or my business. But I'm sure some small businesses and all the employees that relied on cruise dollars will miss the income, and now are displaced... but they can work for someone else. They're dispensable and movable. They won't mind the discomfort of looking for new jobs.
Why doesn't the cruise companies hold the ports accountable. Get the lawyers involved and back charge the ports for the additional fees. Loss of profits will encourage compliance.
Very well presented Don. I would like to have these protestors come to our ranch and attempt these distractions ….. they would be met with very rigorous counter protests.
The entire world has gone insane!!!! Let's hope that this doesn't move outside of Europe but unfortunately the trend is most likely heading to the United States. Like I said the entire world has lost its ever loving mind!!!
Hate to tell you this but it's already happening in the US now. Not specifically involving cruise ships but it's just a matter of time. It's an election year, I am not going to rule anything out we live in an absolutely insane environment right now. I don't see that changing any time soon. Just hope my Alaskan cruise I booked for next year goes off without a hitch
Oh my. I have been blessed to be able to go on a couple of cruises and I’m far from rich. I’ve worked hard, scrimped and saved to be able to do so. These people need to be held accountable by the port and furthermore, the cruise lines should be reimbursed their fees from the government that allowed the protesters. Cruise lines should go one step further and skip that port, so the port looses the revenue.
Do you know how many Cargo ships use Amsterdam Port? It's in the hundreds or thousands per day - they wouldn't notice the "loss"_of a couple of cruise ships.
Don let this group go down to some Caribbean countries and try that. There get there head stromed old school. Some countries depends on cruise ships for income.
They have caused a lot of disruption in my country. Blocking high ways, damaging art pieces, etc. And they did not unchain themselves, the police did. Don't judge the whole of the Netherlands because of a few shall we say less welcoming individuals. I don't understand why there seem to be no consequenties (correct spelling??) for those people either....
Then the people who depend on cruise tourist dollars need to start forming their own counter protest against these people. The cruise industry brought 115 million Euros in revenue to the Netherlands last year. That’s a big chunk of money.
Compared to what the Ports of Amsterdam, Ijmuiden and Rotterdam make from Cargo ships, Cruise ship income is virtually nothing for them. You are not important.
So, they increased the impact on the environment because now there were more buses on the roads, more exhausts. The environment has been impacted worse. These people need to be held accountable
Don…North Americans are always so supportive of the Netherlands progressive views….legalized drugs, prostitution, free child care, free universities. But all of that comes with this as well….a very liberal judicial system. There will never be arrests for this type of activity.
What a shame! I agree with you that people have a right to protest. However, from my perspective, this kind of behavior actually undermines their cause; as it should.
I am so with you on this, this is a ridiculous way to make a point. It’s great there was no repercussions for their actions. They should be charged and made to pay the costs incurred.
I thought port fees covered guaranteed access to the port. The cruise line should at least sue the city for the amount of all cruise fees paid plus legal fees. The city can then go after the protesters to try and get the lost money back.
These people are ridiculous! I agree with you Don, maybe if these people bettered themselves they wouldn't be so jealous. Why don't we ask how much carbon a jetliner passenger creates vs a cruise passenger ....oh, then factor in the volume of passengers... We are not going to stop flying or cruising and we will never apologize for the lifestyle that we EARNED! ..and we have no intention of buying an EV anytime soon! Put them in jail.
It's the Dutch Formula 1 Grand Prix up next. Now if you want to see RICH that's the place to go. I wonder if they will be there chaining themselves to the gates of the circuit?
But let's be clear. Cruise ships are not 100% pollution free. As a person with 60 cruises under my belt, I've never seen a ship not emit black or gray smoke. On a rear facing balcony, I had to get the room steward to clean my balcony every other day of the black soot on a 15 day trans-Atlantic crossing.
We cruised out of Amsterdam on 05/16/24 down the Rhine River on Viking Hervor. We went through locks as we neared Switzerland. It was similar to the Panama Canal but so much smaller.
We have protester group in uk who brought our major motorway system to a standstill for hours by gluing themselves to the tarmac, they were arrested and sent to jail for a maximum of 5 years. However, it is a very contentious subject in uk by human rights bodies saying this is wrong and they should be classed as hero’s
the thing is these people are breaking the Law at least I think so, so why is not the Government doing anything about it. Thanks Don some very good points.
Why do these protesters think disruptive behavior will bring people to their side? It just makes people mad, it does absolutely nothing for their cause.
If there are no consequences then things will continue. Those that glue themselves to roads, etc. should remain there without food and water. The cruiseline and all passengers should sue the group out of existance
Don, this is happening across Europe. The same group causes chaos in the UK as well and the police do virtually nothing. The should be treated as terrorists and you wouldn’t need many to be sentenced harshly. Twenty five years in jail for one or two will discourage a lot of them.
Some of them have been given jail sentences of up to 5 years for organizing protests here in the UK, so we'll just have to wait and see. I can assure you or Police do not do nothing, but, like the rest of Europe, the right to peaceful protest is in our Laws too.
The protest also followed the news in June that the city government of Amsterdam plans to limit and then move cruise ships away from the city center dock. By 2026 the plan calls for limiting cruise ship calls followed by a requirement for the ships to use shore power while on dock. The city is exploring entirely banning cruise ships and moving their dock to the west by 2035.
This is becoming more and more common. I can't see why they are protesting the ship and ports. They should go to the government and talk to them and protest there. And why didn't the authorities step in and stop this.
You’ve been so busy, getting home and putting up these great videos! So, in other countries, we should stop going through and there goes their economy!! Not going to the Netherlands!!
They need to find out thoes people are and make them pay that bill .stop the cruise ships from going there. The shops around the ports depend on thoes dollars. Bet thoes arrests will start happening
How much income, tourist money 💰 do cruise ships 🚢 bring into the Netherlands? Maybe if it’s enough to hurt if cruises stopped going there, the government would wake up and do something.
Norway has over 800,000 cows belching 88,000 tons of methane gas. Disposable diapers take 500 years to decompose. That’s an average of 6000 diapers per child before the age of three. Cruise lines are moving to LNG, can Norway clean some cloth diapers?
There are laws that enable freedom of speech, and it is up to the provinces and governments of sovereignty to enable people to voice their opinion nonviolently. Was there physical harm to ships, crew, passengers, bystanders? No, but message was presented. Even in the states, Terris, protesting disrupts, but, to a point, allowed by US Constitution to Express one's opinions, no matter how diametrically opposite they are. The countries experiencing the same thing understands.
I would sue them all individually. Then they may think twice about what they are doing. Or find out where they work and disrupt them somehow. It's good to hear I am Ultra rich. I pay for my cruises monthly and save for them.
Maybe the port is another one trying to stop cruise ships from coming in. Maybe the cruiselines should go somewhere else. The port is loosing in the long run. Really sad.
All cruise lines just cancel all stops in the Netherlands and let us see how that works out. Of course cruise lines have zero gonads to make calls like this.
I think these protestors need to get out more and do a bit more of real research to find out where their misplaced passions can be more productively utilized.
Trust me, I'm not super rich. I'm disabled and barely get enough to survive. Yet I still go on cruises. and I do it be donating plasma. It's the only time I actually do something for myself. I don't go out to restaurants, I don't go to the movies. I save every penny, which I've actually walked parking lots finding, and donate plasma (which is a good cause as well) in order to go on my trips. So does that make me rich?
