1. mew2king - labbing monster, made me intrested in multiple characters and general punish game as well as determination 2. Armada - similair to m2k but more about my character and who I mapped lots of my playstyle on especially offstage 3. PPMD - mindset and patience mostly, also a big reason I started playing falco/marth seriously early on (I now play peach/fox) 4. Leffen - fox play mostly and striving for playing just super clean to be effective 5. PGH Carroll - for creativity and "just going for it" he gave me hope for improvement in crazy stuff peach could do a little bit of context, I started melee seriously around 2012 as a marth player, tried my hands to many characters and finally settled with peach after smash4 came out as I played her in that game and when going back to melee I stuck with the character and discovered something that fitted me better than anything I had tried. Now I also play fox for certain matchups I don't like as peach (namely campy spacy, patient puff and falcon).
Absolutely loved this. As a bit of a hidden Melee historian myself, I love that there are people out there who still remember that not everything is “the Mango” or “the Zain” or “the KJH” and really know where everything came from. I will say if I was ever to do a commentary inspirations list, you would absolutely have to be in there. Here’s mine for players: 1) Darkrain. I still play black Falcon to this day. I don’t even need to say more. He was the in-person combo video who could make magic happen on the regular before people became good enough at punishing and comboing that they could all do that. I’m not as much of a fanboy as Juggleguy, but it’s safe to say that there’s no single person who has inspired me as much when it comes to this game, all the way from my character choice and color down to my actual playstyle. Sadly there’s a word limit and I can’t go into more detail. 2) Ripple and Dart. Dart was the best player to come out of our little central Illinois region in a long time and a really wonderful guy. My first ever out of state tournament, Genesis 2, my controller stopped working properly and he handed me a new one which I then used for the next several years. Ripple was the best in Springfield, my hometown, and the first person from the internet whose house I ever went over to, with my mom being super paranoid the whole time that I was about to get kidnapped and sold to slavery or some shit. Later on we’d both end up at UIUC together and then he randomly moved in to the same building as me, directly one floor below me. I can’t count how many nights I spent playing him after coming home from classes and how much I learned from him directly. Also eventually became the host of SMYM for a couple years and I helped out with those as well, so it got me more involved in the scene from a TO and production standpoint. 3) Armada. When I went to Genesis 2, my first out of state tournament as I stated earlier, I met all the players I’d watched for so long and played many of them. Armada was the only one out of all the players that I played in friendlies and stuff who didn’t seem to mind that I wasn’t about to be good warmup for whoever they had to play next. He played me for an hour and a half before getting called and even went Peach when I asked to play against it. I always rooted for him over the years and although I did love Mango, I was super happy when Adam won G2 that day. His dedication, passion, and work ethic was a joy to watch and to see succeed. 4) LinksDarkArrows - A RU-vid channel that used to do a ton of Break the Targets content back in the day. Really opened my mind to all the crazy things that were possible in this game, even more so than watching pros and stuff at the time. Especially once TAS became a thing and we started to see just how truly ridiculous Melee could get. Really helped fuel my desire to learn more about the game technically and see just how far things could be pushed. 5) Mango - ‘Nuff said.
yeah I kind of see myself as a mango mixed with armada and a lil bit of m2k and some oldschool tech like ken but have the modern aspects sort of like zain and I mean I love bruce lee so gotta put ppmd in there and sometimes I play puff in friendlies so got some hbox in me and can't forget that I skateboard so bit of a PC Chris kinda guy oh yeah and I main pikachu so axe
M2k - reason I main sheik, the 1000 sheik edge guards video blew my mind back then. PPMD - Was by far my favorite falco style and the reason why I dual main falco Bizzaro flame - reason I got into melee at all, Apex 2015 was my first time watching melee live. Mango - self explanatory Santiago OR drugged fox - Santi for falco - basically like a baby PPMD with some mango sprinkled in, this is probably the style I want now. Drugged fox because his sheik blew my mind at evo 2015 like no other sheik
Could you do a video on controller mods and what's legal to do nowadays? It's kinda hard to find info on it. There was also the whole argument around box controllers in comparison to modded ones, though I'm not sure you'd want to burn your hands on that. :P
@@sherb5490 That was indeed a great vid. It seems a lot is tolerated in terms of controller mods, even though technically most mods would be illegal if you stuck to the rules as they are now. (Box style controllers would also be illegal, though TO's tend to add a clause to permit them nowadays)
My list is Lucky - for the same reasons Toph likes Mang0. STC - Movement & thinking creatively about the game [Redacted] (smash 4 #1 dude) - Control and composure Ginger - Situational Awareness Mango - Mentality
