@@smokinjaws3310 If you call Golfworks, one of the options is to talk to a fitter. They have all of the professional knowledge you'd need to help make a decision on which club and specs will suit your game. Additionally, you can order a single club to test out and then have a set built around that club. When I had my first set of Maltbys built years ago, I just went to my local PGATSS and had them do a mock fitting so I could at least know what lengths and lie angles worked for me. Then I took those specs to Golfworks to built my clubs.

Maltby did not chase this review. They didn't do a single thing to ask for or encourage this review. Maltby and Golfworks were not involved at all. That means Gabe provided and honest opinion on these clubs. I so much respect that. Behind the scenes, other channels are incentivized to review equipment. I have become embarrassed for them. 33 years of golf. Been as low as a 1.5 and currently a 7. I've played all the major brands and designs over the years (I'm a gear head). Not only can the TS1 IM compete with anything on the market from the big brands, it's the best iron I've ever played. It's a unicorn design.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 5 месяцев назад
Hey folks I just wanted to add some extra details in case there were any questions. The set that Gabe tested is the most budget-friendly steel shaft option. They come with True Temper Score LT shafts and Lamkin Crossline grips. The shafts are actually really great performers so dont let that throw you off. You need to look at the "Paks". They offer some upgraded paks for extra $ too. Additionally, you can go to the Custom Shop and fully customize a full set with a variety of top-shelf options. As an example, my set is the TS4 5-GW that I ordered with KBS C-taper shafts and Golf Pride CP2 wrap grips. I paid just over $800.. BUT i equate this to a $1500++ set from the big boys so still a tremendous deal. Additionally, on this set that Gabe reviewed, I had GW swap out the Lamkin grips for some Royal full-cord grips at no extra cost. These grips are awesome! Hopefully that helps some.
@rickjablonski9669

As a lifelong DG S300/X100 player, I can attest that the stock Score LT shaft is a great performer.

@lkennedy67
@lkennedy67 5 месяцев назад
How's the TS1 IM compare to other irons in their lineup?
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 5 месяцев назад
@@jerhomey2020 I have played them. I actually built a set for my dad when he was ready to move on from the KE4 MAX. It's been mentioned that the TS3 might be the best feeling Maltbys ever. As if Miura and Mizuno had a lovechild. I wouldn't disagree either. The TS3's are almost a perfect transition iron that could suit both a mid capper and a single digit. As for looks, the top line is marginally thicker. It's a single piece forged from 1025 carbon and also has co-forged tungsten. No speed goo or maraging face. It does have a progressive cavity weighting through the set so each club is just slightly different from the last in how it looks. I play the bladed TS4 and could easily switch to the TS3's without hesitation. They're SO good!
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 5 месяцев назад
@@lkennedy67 the TS1 IM are the only hollow, multi-piece offering from Maltby. The body is 1025 forged and the face is maraging forged and then the speed polymer inside. The rest of the forged clubs are single piece, muli-step forged with tungsten hidden in the toe. Maltby uses 1025 carbon. My understanding is 1025 is the best overall steel for forged clubs. It's the softest available that allows the club to stay somewhat protected and not get ridiculously dinged up.

@jaxongolf
@jaxongolf 5 месяцев назад
1:16 Gabe, that's not tungsten, actually: it's essentially a steel plug that's been machined into place like a rivet, and it's job is to plug up one of the two holes needed to inject the polymer into the head cavity. The second hole is actually hidden underneath the Maltby "M" circle badge in the toe. This series, as well as the Maltby TS4 Blades, feature a co-forged tungsten weight in the toe, which creates no visible technology upon gross exam. If you check out the product page of its predecessor, the TS1, you'll see how the design has been refined but shares the basic elements. I've dissected a head or two and interestingly the polymer is grey/black and quite springy.

I bought an 8 iron head in this set just to test. I built it up with a Modus 120 shaft in x flex. Compared to my ZX7 irons (bent 2 degrees weak) the TS1Ms are slightly lower spinning and are higher launching. If my ZX7s were stock lofts I suspect the spin would be basically the same. I do like the increased launch of the TS1Ms though. Having owned P790s in the past (2019 model) I will say these are not as "hot", which in my opinion is good. There is a very slight click to these, but they are quite muted for a hollow body construction. Distance consistency is very good. If I were looking to build a new set these would be right up there.

I knew you'd love these, Gabe! Great review. I have 5-PW in the TS1-IM and they are something special. For me, in terms of performance, they kind of split the difference between P790 and P770. Not as long as P790 but more forgiving and longer than P770 and WAY better feel and sound than either. And I love the finish and look. And no toe screw or ugly sole slot on 7-5 irons. The feel/sound in the middle is a beautiful heavy thud and as you move away from the center it only gets a little higher pitched, but still solid and not loud. The sole is narrow but has quite a bit of radius so to me it actually plays like there's a lot more bounce than the spec sheet shows. Turf interaction very nice. Easy to flight and work. My LaunchPro numbers showed fairly low spin compared to similarly lofted irons, but I've also been working on more of an in-to-out path and a draw, and that'll lower spin. But the peak height and descent angle are still plenty good. Great iron. Will fit a lot of golfers. Looks and feels great and pretty long.

@danielcohen3159

It's still a player's iron above all else to me. I think a lot would depend on the KIND of high handicapper. Some higher handicaps have weaknesses with driving or short game, but their ball-striking with irons is actually pretty good. But if irons/approach play are the weakness, then I would definitely steer that player towards Maltby's TS3 or the KE4 MAX irons, which are both going to be more forgiving. @@kevinneely9119

I just bought a TS1 IM PAK with 4-PW + GW. I also added a 56degree milled wedge. The total with shipping to Oklahoma and sales tax came out to $700. It’s so much more value for money than name brand. I did a fitting at a local shop and paid $100 to find out t a good shaft flex and etc. they used a Mizzuno head that also had the injection molding. The KBs tour lite regular flex worked fine. The clubhead size is just about the same as the Takomo 101. The 101T has a very slightly smaller blade length. I went with the Maltby because I also get the injection molding and they ship from Ohio instead of Hong Kong. I just ordered them so I can’t say if they are magic, but a full bag of irons with good quality shafts and grips for $700 to my door?! Pretty nice.

I went to Golfworks and built a club. After shaft selection grip length and shaft selection. It was $136 & change per club. Which still is not bad. What shafts did the clubs have you used? I went with the cheaper temper shaft dynamic gold if I remember right. They also have a charge for doing something with the spline of the shaft. So there are a ton of options to custom build your club. Also it looked like you could build your own club glue the heads on and everything. Pretty cool. Thanks for the review!
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 5 месяцев назад
@@bobfisher9452so the shafts that Gabe played in the irons is ultimately their budget shaft through True Temper. It's called the Score LT. The reason it's so inexpensive from my understanding is that they basically have cut a deal with True Temper to purchase in such mass quantities that they're able to sell it extremely inexpensively. I could be wrong on that but I believe it's something I've read around the forums. All in all it is a fantastic shaft and I've seen very high reviews from both newer golfers and even scratch players that use it. Supposedly it's a little higher launching but extremely smooth and stable so definitely worth considering. And you are correct that Golf works has a great multitude of services and options. Golf work's primary purpose is actually to supply club building components, tools, and supplies to many large custom club companies as well as individual club builders so as you can imagine they've got just about everything. Secondarily they started their golf club company and have been around for quite some time but it just works well to have a golf component company running a golf club company.

Maltby designs their clubs with a bit of wizardry involved. You'll notice that the hosels are shorter than most other clubs. The hosel is the part of the head that the shaft fits into. This allows them to repurpose mass into other areas. Visually these appear more difficult to play than they really are. On paper they carry the same MOI and CG characteristics as a set of SGI clubs. Technically you could probably get away with playing these at your level and grow your game into them.

I play the TS3. Not good enough to play TS1 series. I have Aerotech Steel Fiber 95/110 shafts in them. They’re phenomenal. So soft and forgiving.
@ughhstuff
@ughhstuff 5 месяцев назад
You can play both. Even though theyre marketed as players distance theyre actually very forgiving. However, Im a TS3 guy myself +9 HC. The TS3s have a lower center of gravity making it easer to get it up in the air, but TS1-M isnt noticeably more difficult to hit. The MPF of the TS1-m is 728 and the TS3's MPF is 849. According to the designer, you wont be able to tell a significant difference between it as theyre both super Game Improvement. He claims you wont be able to tell a difference in scores within 100 MPF variance and just barely at 200 MPF. As an example the Ping G430 has a MPF of 731. So those are are considered very forgiving and the TS1-m has the same score. The P790s are 642 MPF. In general, even the TS-1Ms are easier to hit than most current GI sets.

When testing irons I would prefer you play up a tee or so and tee off with the longest iron and use just the irons. Maybe even play from your normal tees and see how well you do compared to driver iron play

I was only able to get them out on the range but I wanna say these are the best Irons I have ever owned?? lol You really have a knack for digging the gems out! Now I'm looking at the driver and putter that are on sale. The driver is Titanium with a HZRDUS Smoke graphite shaft. Maybe I'll buy it and send it for you to review! ..

Never played these irons but I do play, and am a big fan of Maltby wedges. Unlike Vokey wedges which have been cast for years the Maltby's are 1025 forged and play like butter with a nice grind and choice of bounce. I can open my 56/14 and the leading edge is right on the turf

I have STi2 now and I really like the concept of these irons, have reviewed Takomo, Ram and MacGregor but as I am finding they are not getting as high of praise as these so maybe it's Maltby for the win again!! I really was quite impressed with the $200 set of STi2's that I have been playing for the past 3 years.

When you do iron tests have you ever thought about playing ONLY the irons from a forward tee? And/or laying up to certain yardages to ONLY hit the irons? Seems like that would be a more complete test of the irons than only hitting them a few times when you're hitting driver and wedges, too.

I wish you do a video on how to order the clubs and the impact of the different options. I have been fitted twice for iron and on both occasions the fitter concluded I get standard stiff shafts, standard lies, standard grips, standard length, etc. With all the options Maltby offers how would I know how one option would be better. Can you discuss this or better get a rep. from the company to share this info.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 5 месяцев назад
Maltby has a very inclusive forum where the designers of the clubs are very active and accessible to bounce questions off of. Also, their phone customer service is top notch. If you call, you get in touch with a fitter to guide you through the options and how they compare to other clubs on the market.

Is that price just for the heads or the whole iron set? Thanks to your video I went looking for a set and only found the heads in that price range for a whole set. I could add a shaft, and graphite grip but that brought the club up to about $150 each, or a total of about 41200 for a 4-gw set. I ask because I am interested in them but not for $1200

I love Maltby irons! I've had the DBMs, still have the PTMs and a TS1/TS2 combo. I'm in the UK and used to be able to get them from a company in Sweden (Nordica Golf) but it seems like they no longer stock Maltby. I've tried the majority of the OEMs and Maltby are as good, if not better than all of them. The only downside is that resale values are dire, but if you are going to keep them for a good while that won't be a problem. I'd love to be able to try the new releases but I doubt that I'd be able to get them for a good price in the UK now!
