There's a French song that was made during that time, by an unknown soldier.. It's called "La chanson de Craonne", due to the battle or Craonne, where it's supposed to have been created, here are the translated lyrics : "After 8 long days The rest is over We're gonna take back the trenches Our job is so useful, that without us they kill themselves But it's over, we're done with it Nobody wants to go forth And the heart well grown, like in a cry for help We say goodbye to civilians Goodbye life, goodbye love Goodbye all the women It's over, forever Of this terrible war It's at Craonne On the plateau That we must die Because we are all condemned We are the sacrificed 8 days of trenches 8 days of suffers But yet we still have hope That tonight will come the succession That we're waiting impatiently Suddenly in the night And in the silence We see someone going forth It's an officer, of infantry men Who comes to replace us Quietly in the night, and under the rain The little hunters, come seek forth their tomb Goodbye life, goodbye love Goodbye all the women It's over, forever Of this terrible war It's at Craonne On the plateau That we must die Because we are all condemned We are the sacrificed It's so sad to see, on these boulevards All these big men partying If for them life is great For us, it's not the same Instead of hiding, all these trickster (The word is hard to translate, it's basically someone giving someone else his job while hiding, remaining safe) Would better come to the trenches To defend their goods, 'cus we have nothing We, the poor peasants And the fellas are laying there To defend the goods, of these people Goodbye life, goodbye love Goodbye all the women It's over, forever Of this terrible war It's at Craonne On the plateau That we must die Because we are all condemned We are the sacrificed Those who have the money, they will come back Because it's for them we're dying But it's over, us the assholes Will stop doing our job It'll be your turn, mister fat guys To get on the plateau Because if you want to do war Pay it with your life" A really powerful song, I thought it could be good to share its meaning with english speakers who may not know about it

the last part is the best. It shows perfektly how bad the soldiers feel and that they have understood, that they have to fight. Completely bitter thoughts, that are completely reasonable and a imaginated scenario they would wish for, only by thinking about a thing that could calm their mind, doesnt matter how little the chance is for that to happen, the thought alone could ease their peace seaking minds. They were meeting with Confederate ships during the war to negotiate trade deals and potentially supplying the confederacy with weapons and supplies. Nearly 75 years later, US began doing what they accused Britian of doing by supplying raw iron and trucks to the Soviet Union, food and other supplies to Chinese forces and weapons and food supplies as well as more trucks to Britian. Oh and don't forget the oil embargo that US put on Japan that provoked Japan to attack the US. So ask yourself this: how can you claim to be a neutral nation when you are purposely supplying one side of the war or another? You're not neutral. WW2 was like ten times more depressing. We had h!it1er and Germany taking over like all of Europe and winning fights with RUSSIA. Then, U.S. fought a war against like 3 COUNTRIES. Then, one of the worst land/air/naval battles in History, “battle of Okinawa” over 700k men died in the beaches and water of that place. Getting immediately gunned down without any hope. A good movie to watch about the war of Okinawa is called”saving private ryan”. But in conclusion, ww2 is the worst thing the world has had to experience currently. I even forgot to mention the horrible nuking of Japan.

@tysonharbidge3376
@tysonharbidge3376 Год назад
No large scale offensives took place at all during the final hours of ww1. Of course naturally soldiers were killed in the remaining minutes due to slow communications and the nature of trench warfare in ww1 (mainly the constant artillery) but there is absolutely zero accounts of a large scale offensive especially in the manor this movie depicts, the reality is by late 1918 the German army was having massive mutinies all across the forces to the point where the entire Northern fleet refused to redeploy their naval assets, this officer would’ve been shot by dozens of his own men

As a non German speaker (Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch aber ich kann nicht gut Deutsch sprechen) i honestly found it more powerful too. It's that it feels more real when it's in the original language/language it should be in. It inspired me to read the book too which was a rollercoaster of emotions. I'm fascinating with German history so I love seeing the German perspective, I've watched a few German films at this point, mainly WW1 or WW2 (Der Untergang, Das Boot, Rommel etc) but I'd be interested in watching more, i saw one about Maria Theresa (Austrian i know and Holy Roman Empire at that point) that I kind of want to watch too.

That shooting scene was fictional though. Unlike in WW2, the German military very rarely shot its soldiers during WW1, and there is no proof anything like this happened on the last day.
@slyze6933

No they weren’t, a total of only 18 Germans were executed for cowardice in WW1, it’s more likely that those who refused would’ve started a chain reaction of more mutinies. The movie’s good but the ending is entirely fabricated, no offensives occurred on the last day of the War, and is used to kill off the main character
