There's a movement among physical media collectors right now that somehow you should regret collecting. I don't understand why there's such a groundswell, but I'm diving into whether or not you should regret collecting physical media, and it might surprise you.

Physical media is definitely the future for anyone wanting a deep, rich experience and learned family imo. That includes books too. I’m starting an original Xbox collection, a 360 collection, an N64 collection, a Gamecube selection, and a huge movie collection including a wide variety of horrors, sci-fi series, anime etc. I’m also stockpiling enormous supplies of tinned red-meat & powdered eggs so they can’t force me to eat crickets!😉

Physical media is the only way to go. Just recently, I have heard that Sony is removing or blocking games that people have downloaded. The best reasoning I have heard Sony is giving is that people are paying for the license to use the media, but the people don't "own" the games they buy and download. Yes, that is games, but if this is true, they (and other companies) can very easily translate that over to music, videos, and even books. The only thing beneficial about digital media is the convenience, portability, and the potential to save space. On movies I buy, they all have digital codes on them, so I've got loads of digital media as well. I'll never go away from physical media. When they decide to take all the access away for digital media rights, or a person's internet is down, I'll still be able to listen to music, watch my movies and shows, and play games. That is an easy win for me. The digital thing just isn't for me considering how easily it can be taken away from people.

That’s collecting in every aspect, no matter what it is. But at the end of the day we all love it. Great video! Letting someone borrow a 4K that I recommended it being their first time is my favorite. You should feel pretty smart at this point. You own private property, while everyone else is that the mercy of some company or service to get what they want. I can watch virtually whatever I want with virtually not cost at all, while others are having to pay. My dvd/blu-ray collection is over 1,000+, and that's just movies and documentaries. When you include TV shows spanning from the 70s into the 2020s, you're talking about hundreds more. I couldn't be happier with my physical media. Everyone else can simply be shut out of their entertainment life under the right set of circumstances, and I can't be. I'll stick with that.

Here's a tip look up something called your DVD region. Its easy to find out just type in [ what is my DVD region then add the country you live in] . To find out this is important to know if you order physical media. Because there is different regions like A/1 ,B/2 an so on. The reason it's important to know is that if you live in say region A/1 that is the United States an Canadia only. So any physical media an physical media players are for that region only. 4k movies I will cover later. But DVDs an Blu-rays made in that region are basically locked for that region only. Meaning a region A/1 disk will not play in a region B/2 player. It's like putting a Xbox game disk in a Playstation game system. There is something called region 0 or region free disk an players. The region free disk will play on any player from any region. A region free player can play a disk made in any region. This information will help make sure you can actually play the physical media you get. By making sure it's for your region or if it's region 0 it will work any where. A good RU-vid channel is Richard Diaz. Because he goes over all the new physical media releases with details. Like what region its for. Now 4k disk are sometimes region free an sometimes not. Here's the thing if you see it in a store in your country it's for your region. So no worries there but you need to know it when ordering physical media. Basically look at a physical media case look for a image of the earth. There will be a letter or number in it that's the DVD region. It will be on the back or it will have a symbol with a letter or number in it. I now its called the DVD region but it goes for DVDs and Blu-rays an 4k disk.

Why should anyone regret collecting whatever it is that tickles their fancies? Provided they're not letting it bury them alive or becoming unable to take care of themselves? When we lose power, or the internet (Some have satellite services), our back up generators and/or batteries from solar provide us (Mostly, for the kids), at least one movie time slot per evening, kinda like our personal 'Theater' where they can relax and enjoy. Try doing that with anything electronic-purchased, that demands you sign in to use. :-)

No regrets on collecting physical media. A concern about manufacturers refusing to make units like DVD/VHS players for Collectors. I've always had some dvds but I didn't become a collector until I stumbled upon Dolls (1987) on Blu-ray. I was thrilled because I had no idea this movie was available on Blu-ray. After that I found After Midnight (1989) and I learned about Scream Factory and Vinegar Syndrome and I kept picking up more and more. This hobby may be pricey, but honestly, I've never been happier. I've been finding all the movies I loved as a kid and even discovering some gems I had never even heard of like Mountaintop Motel Massacre. I thankfully don't have kids and never will so my husband and I have free time and extra money for our hobbies which is great. I will never let anyone shame me about my collection because I know all my movies are uncensored, and in many cases, I have the directors cut. When they watch My Bloody Valentine they are getting the censored version. The uncut version is only on disc. I've always been a horror gal so that is the vast majority of my collection but I do have some cool comedies and a nice Charles Bronson collection too. I love collecting. Totally agree and relate to what your saying...and double dipping, that's just part of the fun I guess. Makes no sense owning the same movie more than once but its all about memories and giving us a slice of what we perhaps once had. It's our money and we know most of the collection is worth nothing value wise, but can you put a price on nostalgia and emotions. Plus then you also have the joy of sitting and watching the movies. Collecting physical media is a hobby at the end of the day like anything else. The ones who do it, get it...that's all that matters 🙂

I don't regret having such a large collection. I don't regret buying the same title multiple times to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I *do* regret buying a bunch of titles that I had no personal connection with simply for the sake of collecting - especially big collector's sets with ridiculous amounts of swag that serves no purpose. But even there, about half the time, I end up changing my mind about it. For example, I bought that lavish Flash Gordon 4K edition from Arrow a couple of years ago. I had seen the movie a couple of times over the years and didn't really have a strong opinion on it either way - and I regretted spending so much money on that set almost immediately. But I decided that I was going to watch it at least once before selling it - and I ended up really enjoying it during that viewing for some reason. Guess I just needed to be in the right mindset.

@HunterBoldingVideo For me, I don't like to invest in physical media (typically a film on DVD) unless it's a film that I know I'll re-watch. So, if I catch a movie on TCM or on a free streaming service (like Tubi) and it's a movie I like enough to re-watch, then it will "earn a spot" in my video library. And then, I'll add it to my "purchase list." My go-to site for purchases is eBay because I like the auction/best offer options. Sometimes, they work out; other times, they don't. I will only purchase brand new, sealed DVD's/Blu-rays. Currently, my official individual film library contains 145 movies, plus 2 Marx Bros. collections. Another 40 or so Christmas movies. And a series of TV content (TV movies, complete series, etc.). My biggest concern is that content may be edited, restricted or perhaps even banned when it resides on a streaming service. But when you own it, you've got the whole thing, unedited! Keep physical media alive!
@ReinMixTape

Yeah I've heard/read those views too. But it seems alien to me, how can you go from loving your hobby to being totally alienated from it? Like, right now, I'm not feeling buying retro Sega games. I've had been doing it weekly for 4 yeas straight and I want a break. I'm not selling a single one of the games I bought. Nope. They're shelved while I play the Nintendo Switch+5 Pokemon games I bought recently. And I'm still weeding my way through a couple of Genesis/Mega Drive RPGs. Zero regrets. Will not sell. This hobby is for me, that is: retro sega games, DVDs of movies/a series I want to own, or collectable type items, whatever. I love it. Even if I am taking a break from the buying side. It's all good. It's given me cash flow to go buy random Pokemon cards I think are cool looking and put them into binders!

A piece of metal/plastic that takes you from a to b which constantly costs you money. So let them look at me with my collections. I don't regret my 55 000 comics, 6500 dvd/blurays, 5500 cd's, 2000 games and 1500 books.....not a second's regret.

I enjoy collecting. What I don't like is running out of space on displaying my collection. One thing I don't care about is most of the Vinegar Syndrome releases. Most of the movies don't deserve a blu-ray special boxset.

I only have a few regrets when buying physical media. It was not that I got it or the price but it was the fact. That the ones that made the movie had no idea what they whore doing. I mean on one DVD the movie has beyond horrible audio problems. Seriously you can only hear like 20 percent of what anyone says in the entire movie. The other 80 percent forget it its like people whispering its barely Audible. If you didn't see their lips moving you wouldn't even know they whore talking at all. Its like that from start to finish the director never noticed an well that movie is garbage. Because of its audio issue then another one by the writer and director of Halloween 4. I had high hopes for that one but its is a huge letdown. I would not recommend it to anyone. Because it makes zero sense because it's supposed to be about a killer going on a killing spree. But it started like a p rn movie then it was about a witch then it was about a killer. Then there was a ghost that turned out to be the witches ghost that possess people. Then in the entire movie like only one person was killed. So yea I only regret having hope that people actually know how to make a movie. With good picture an audio an a solid story concept that makes sense. Have I spent alot on one piece of Physical media yeas but rarely. But when I do I make sure it's worth it like for a old television show that went on for like 20 years. That's alot of episodes it doesn't even list seasons it list the years. It also has the specials so that's alot so I happily paid like $80 for it.

I emulate, I use flash carts, but nothing beats actually owning the game. Don't get me wrong, emulation is incredibly important for ease of use, and also preservation, especially these digital only games, but there's a place for physical too.
