A couple weeks before we plan to work cows, we start feeding them in the corral. They get used to it, and the last time, it's easy to just shut the gate. We do this with 100 to 125 head.

That’s the best idea he could aim for. Just treats everyday in or near the chute area. He also needs added stop gates in the chute so his cattle can’t back out once they are inside.

I'm really glad Jimi is going to be a bull, even if you're not keeping his entire genome in your herd. That dude is massive and good-shaped, having him sire more cattle is gonna be a positive addition to wherever he ends up.
@LegendHold1
@LegendHold1 Год назад
Hey Morgan...make a few stop gates along your race way. These are gates that fold open forward and then if the cows turn around you pull the gate back to close the gate across the race to stop the cattle flowing backwards. That way you have some stops along the way to keep the cows from coming back out as you add more cattle to the raceway.

Getting the cows through the chute every day for a couple of weeks and feeding them in there will have everyone less stressed so that they are looking forward to going through and not expecting anything unpleasant to happen on the day you need to treat them. Short term pain for long term gain. Use the training you already have in place from moving them to a new paddock of grass each day with polyrope paddocks up to the chute.

That's great, Morgan, that the whole herd is doing so well and you found a buyer for Jimmy. Before the next vet visit, maybe add an additional small pen at the beginning of the chute. Drive as many as you can into the original holding pen like you did today, close them in, and then drive the remaining into the next pen and close them in. And, maybe block off more areas with your poly rope. Also, for your own safety, please put the camera on a tripod so you have both hands free and are paying full attention to the task and not managing the camera. Or at least, wear the go pro on a harness instead of hand holding a camera. Makes me nervous when you have to be that close to them, especially in situations that make them nervous.

Then I watched some of the farm meeting replay and you mentioned he would be leaving the farm, which I knew could only really mean that he had indeed found a buyer. So that's cool! p.s. I also haven't watched the weaning video because it tears me up to hear the moms and babies wailing. best wishes, glad to hear the vet was impressed with your efforts!!!! It was always the case that the farmers who stayed up on the current learning, while also not just leaping into every passing fad and who also retained all of the best from tradition, were the ones who have done the best over time.

proper infrastructure is definitely a game changer! we built a little wire fence chute for the sheep so we can run them along the fenceline into the chute to catch them for shearing and checkups. before we did that, we would run out of steam trying to catch them in the open field haha! also, with the chute its a lot less stressful for the animals. altogether, its a win-win to have proper infrastructure set up. cheers Morgan!

What did you elect to do that made a difference? ☑️ Rotational grazing for best quality forage ☑️ Rotational grazing for parasite control ☑️ Fly control for parasite control ☑️ Rotational grazing for high quality milk for calves ☑️ Low stress lifestyle ☑️ No overcrowding ☑️ Pastured life rather than containment, which is natural Good job, Morgan!

A couple stop gates would help. Since you're feeding alfalfa cubes, consider feeding those in the chute system on a regular basis. One of the things that can be critical if you have an injured or sick animal is being able to catch/contain them. A few minutes every week or so will make it routine for them.
@jlgordey
@jlgordey Год назад
Advice, advice, advice, lol. There is a tool that looks similar to a pliers but has 4 prongs on it. The prongs are used to stretch a "cheerio" ring wide open, when the calves are young (under 1 month, younger the better) you take the tool and the rubber cheerio and place it around the testicles as high up as it will go, close the tool prongs and the cheerio squeezes the blood vessels and such and eventually, the scrotum and all it's contents fall off. I am sure your vet can show you how. It is much less stressful than surgical castration and costs much less. Just a suggestion. They are used extensively here in Alberta. Happy New Year

Make the chute to have 2 closing gate, one in the middle and one at the end. Once you have part of the herd in after the middle gate, you can close it to keep them in. Then you can try to herd the one or 2 remaining cows in and close the end gate. Then open the middle gate to join back the herd. Put your wire strings for the areas which you do not want the cows to go to. I’m not a farmer but this seems a good plan.

We also used a large circle of panels and we'd walk them in that circle and open a panel to the chute when the ones we wanted were coming around. But that takes more than 1 person. Using a big funnel shape worked best for 1 person to get them where we needed them. You did well though, it sounds like.

Hear me out: You've got a "waiting room" area right before the chute, but what if you made a secondary sort of "after visit" area once the vet treats them. Maybe it could lead into the barn, and you can close it off with more gates or that white rope fence you use. That way cows treated can't get back into the open area, and anyone who you couldn't herd that are sitting around out there like Amanda and Anna Green can be herded into the "waiting room" with help from the vet and whoever else is there. I think that'd be a pretty good way to go about it. The herd can't mix back in with the cows that haven't been seen by the vet, but the ones that have will have a nice large area to wait in before you let them back into the open yard. Just a thought.

Morgan, you might wanna try and get hold of two lengths of semi flexible plastic pipe, the type the utility companies lay underground about 1 1/2" thick and about 3 feet long each, usually blue or yellow, I've seen farmers in the UK use them as an extension of their arms to help move the cattle by making yourself wider they don't go around or double back, they also use them to tap them in the behind to help move them,.

Morgan, perhaps if you made it a routine habit to get the cattle into the penned area once in a while, just to create good memories for the cows, using treats to entice them. That is what a friend of mine has done with her animals, she routinely worked with her animals regularly, and they became so relaxed about going into the pen and into the grab cage, that she only has to shake a bucket with treats in it and they happily follow her straight in without hesitation. I think, as you rightly said, they are afraid and suspicious of the gated area. Also, when you are herding the cattle, PLEASE, PLEASE put the camera on a tripod. If one of those cattle kicks you or runs into you, or worst of all, gores you, you would be in a very bad way! Always have your mobile in your pocket too, so that if you are ever injured on the farm, you can call for help. Health and safety FIRST Morgan! We don't want you injured and alone. God bless you and all those you love. I hope you had a great Christmas and that you will have a very Happy New Year!
