We get a lot of requests.... many have been about the so called legendary INFI Steel. Nobody knows the exact composition but it is suppossed to be as tough as it can get. However.... this toughness comes as a high cost. DBK's mission to find out if that is worth it! Finally testing Busse's INFI steel!

Even if I was a knife guy and not a gun guy (too broke fir both, especially with .223 over 60 cents a round), I would not support a company that hides their steel composition. Just like I try to only support open source software. If the company doesn't have the confidence to think they could handle competition, I wouldn't be confident in them. Another guy said it was H8. If I did spend real money it would be on msterial and equipment to make one personally, but with all the options out there I don't know why anyone would support hiding the material (like, what if it happened to be perfect for something else, like a submarine propeller or something. It may be a demonstrably good blade, but there are others) I rock a shorty KA-BAR for prying or opening cans (same tang as the big one so it's much tougher, even for 1095) and a chinesium 440A M7 bayonet for knife specific tasks (no edge retention, but sharpens in a hurry. My first 440A blade, I was obligated: as is anyone with a 16" midlength AR, *obviously*, but was very broke after getting the rifle. I was also obligated to buy it, as the people's republic of Washington state was banning all future purchases at the time, and "assult weapons" are still banned from commerce.)

I've been using a Busse for 7 years now, almost daily for the past year, mostly for splitting big logs since I enjoy it more over an axe, and I haven't sharpened it once. Made it a secondary convex back then and obviously it doesn't shave but it has zero edge damage. It's honestly insane. Was about time you guys got your hands on one, they really do not disappoint😁
@getsmart3701
@getsmart3701 2 года назад
A fairly blunt big knife (just to an "okay" working edge level) is the best way to run a large blade in my opinion and historically how it was done (according to the local "historical lifestyle" museum)...I run both of my Terava Skrama's that way and like you I'm constantly amazed at their resilience and both are just a joy to use with little to no maintence.
@kazekai6
@kazekai6 2 года назад
@Juan Moore I own a couple traditional forged axes, had them for longer than the Busse. Still I enjoy splitting medium sized logs with the knife. Other sizes you need the axe obviously. And surely axe is more efficient, it's made for the job, but as something to do in my free time without any hurry I'd choose the knife everytime!

You knife guys are crazy, an axe and a maul together would be less and faster But I've no problem with that, I get it (went BCM on my AR-15) *it's the hiding of the steel that bothers me, like closed source software: imo intellectual property is BS for people who aren't confident they can compete without a secret* It may be a demonstrably good blade, but I don't see this community of knowledge and practice would put up with "closed source" metallurgy.

@@abstractapproach634 I get what you're saying, but I feel a bit different. Busse has no problem backing up their product and knows it competes well, and has for a very long time. I am very secretive about some of my plant genetics(I sell cannabis seeds). People who grow it know it can compete, but after spending years of research/testing on projects, I think it is up to the people who put their heart into it. MANY knife makers are very secretive about their heat treatment protocols! Nothing wrong with telling the world, or not. It's up to the people who put in the effort. Cooking and recipes are similar.

@voltsoftruthBSbuster

I know a few people that send their blades gor analysis to see what INFI was since Busse won't release the composition of their steel. And technically its not their steel, its a steel that already exists but they perform their custom version of heat treatment. The people claimed the results came back indicating their steel is either A8 or A8 modified. If thats true A8 is a very tough steel, but almost no one uses it in the States. One custom maker used it Tom Johanings years ago, and he was the only maker I could find. Few Italian companies use A8. I found some specs on it. It shows that at 59rc it has a charpy impact value of 160 joules or 118 foot pounds. For comparison Cpm 3v at 59rc has 100 joules. A2 for example at 60rc has charpy impact of 40 foot pounds. 5160 has a charpy impact of 85 foot pounds at 58rc. S7 has charpy impact of 165 joules at 56rc. So A8 is basically at the level of Shock resistance steels. Just some basic info if you guys are curious.

I think if you sharpen knives on that system ( i use it too ), without cooling at all it will ruin the HT at the edge. Since after about even just 15 seconds on the course belt without cooling it is too hot to touch even. I always dip my knives into a bucket after about 10 seconds when i use this system. About the knife i feel like its just so easy to make a knife that is this tough, just take a massive thick slab of steel, do the cheapest HT on it so it stays nice and soft, put a 40 degree edge on each side so 80 in total. Put some micarta on it and you are done. I feel like this is an incredible marketing trick with insane profit margins. Voor de rest leuke video en toffe gasten!

Each Busse knife has over 40 hours of heat treating processes done on it including a cryo treat. These do not have “cheap heat treats”. As far as the thickness Busse knives tend to run about .21-.22”’s in thickness. There are much thicker knives out there. Throw in their no questions asked lifetime warranty that also transfers between owners and the price in my opinion is worth it. If you can break a Busse you are probably going to the hospital after.

This is an NMSFNO. Nuclear Meltdown, Special Forces, Natural Outlaw. No longer in production. This knife originated from the SFNO, then Busse decided to give it the Nuclear Meltdown treatment. Nuclear Meltdown: A treatment Busse does that rounds any exposed steel edge (spine, butt, choil). Looks nice, terrible for ferro rod and scraping wood. It also lengthens the blade from the standard model. There are several Busse knives the have gotten the NM treatment. Special Forces: This refers to the handle design. Busse has several handle designs that they swap with different blades and make a new model. A current offering with this handle design, as of this video, is the Hell Razor II. Natural Outlaw: This refers to this specific blade design. So when you see a Busse acronym, part of it is the blade style, part is the handle style, and it may or may not have a cosmetic treatment, usually designated by the NM. Hope this helps.

And it's a Garth edition. A later iteration from the original. Probably had a overrun in the back that they let Garth ruin with that horrible color. Love the fact it's a convex grind. But most of the NM knives are not very good iterations of the original. Except for the NMFBM. It's a exceptional chopper. The NMFSH was the biggest travesty in my opinion. The other flagship in Busse's line. They got it right with the Heavy Heart. Then messed it up with the Nuclear Meltdown. Best knife Busse made in forever was the LE basic 8. And the best designs with a regular handle were the early Swamp Rats. And the best users are the Scrapyards. The DB series from Scrapyard is very good. My most used are a original run Ratweiler and a 911. The 911 is probably the best big knife Scrapyard has put out. That saber into a convex grind is amazing because it doesn't bind. I blended the primary and secondary at 20 degrees into a almost full height convex grind (Except the convex goes into the high saber). Amazing blade.

I jumped on the Busse bandwagon from watching The Knife Destruction channel on RU-vid by a guy named Noss. He had hundreds of hours of videos. (I think he made enemies of many knife companies). Somewhere along the line, I read something from someone who was trying to assertain which base tool steels were used for SR101 and SR77. One was thought to be a steel made for jet engine turbine fans, and the other, a steel made for jackhammer chisels. This guy Noss also explained that there were different versions of INFI. Like the economy versions, ie: Busse Basic 9, etc... was a cheaper, less processed version of INFI. And a FBMNF would obviously be the top version of INFI. My Basic 9 was stolen 😢; but I replaced it with a much better model.

Basically a thick piece of 14C28N The nitrogen makes for a rust proof almost elastic steel. 1095 like most non-nitrogen steels has a harder but more brittle edge.

I’m so glad y’all finally got your hands on a Busse. They have a vast array of knives from edc to combat ready to dagger type sword sizes that they make. Ones that I have owned and seen have always impressed me, and anyone else that ever saw them I can not wait to start this video in order to see what y’all put one through. Keep up the good work. And if you didn’t know, they have a grind that pretty well meshes all the grinds together into one. Oddly it works.

The number one thing about infi that makes it attractive is the toughness combined with the relatively high degree of stain resistance it has. At least for me. Other steels can beat it individually for toughness/edge holding/stain resistance in different categories respectively, but it's got an attractive blend of all 3 properties - especially for a bigger knife.

If memory serves me right (from over a decade ago)... INFI is nitrogen infused, though I don't recall the base steel (maybe 52100?) Sub companies to Busses Knives are: Swamp Rat Knives: 52100 steel Junkyard Dog or something like that: S7 steel.

Happy to watch this when holding my tgulb in hand.. Where I live I have seen zero busse knifes here.. But I admit what that money you have much options.. That wont help when shipping is like 55 and top of that 24% customs.. Plus top of that custom sheath something like 100 and shipping and 24% customs... But i want that so I get that no matter the price.. So it was over 700 euro mark easy.. What knive you get 750 euros..

Infi steel (from my own research hears ago) is a nitrogen based steel like Spyderco uses in some blades. As such it is a work hardened metal such as copper or bronze.

Friend, how do you like to relax: sunbathing on the beach and playing with sea waves or rapidly descending the hill on a sled and making a snowman? Or perhaps to measure puddles with boots in the spring or walk through the autumn park and listen to the rustle of golden leaves under your feet? Nature is so different and so beautiful - it doesn't matter if it's summer or winter, spring or autumn. Each season has its own colors, sounds and weather.
