Whilst there are a few tales around the origin of the masala dosae, many believe that it was first made in the temple town of Udupi and at Mitra Samaj, an eatery that in its Brahmanical traditions uses no onion and garlic in its preparations since its inception in 1949. Today, however, Mitra Samaj is perhaps more known for its Buns and Goli Bajje, scrumptious snacks I tried on my earlier visit to film a Gourmet On The Road episode. This time though, I was keen to introduce the boss to the delicious wonders of this 73-year-old Udupi tiffin house. This breakfast outing also turned into an impromptu meet-up with viewers from across the country, fitting in its temple complex setting where people from all walks of life converge in faith.

When you said Boss was Telugu, I remembered one of my best friend from Andhra Pradesh, he is Nalini Mohan from Guntur. He used to bring Prawn Pickle in Sonpapri glass containers (full) which his grandma used to make for him in the hostel. I still remember the taste. It used to be dark in colour with hot chilly taste. Oh those memories...I miss them. This was in 1985, when I was studying in 3rd Std, Bishop Cotton Boys School....those memoirs still lingers when I watch your videos...I miss them so much...

@@shomabhattacharya7515 I personally have not been to Madurai. But it indeed is famous for temples. TN is known as the land of temples. Perfect place for pilgrimage and receives the highest number of both international and domestic tourists of any state in India probably for this very reason. I am sure you'll enjoy it thoroughly and won't be disappointed.

Masalae Dosaes were in Cubbon Pete Bengaluru in 1920s. It is wrong to say Idli, Dosaes and Vadaes are from Udupi. The Udupi , Coonadapur entrepreneurs took initiative from the Bengaluru cusine

When I was an engineering student at Coimbatore (1972 - 77), my most favourite eatery was Mitra Samajam. Amazingly delicious and aromatic vegetarian delights. In the evening, a plate of Rava Kesari or Halwa, a plate of bajji or Mysore bonda or potato bonda, a large and crispy Masala dosa and a tongue tickling filter coffee....all, together used to cost Rs 0.85..!! 85 paise..!!

In fact, my entire 5 years of engineering education was absolutely free. I didn't pay a rupee as fee. At the time of joining, I paid a deposit of Rs 400, which was repaid, when I came out of college.

Good morning dear Kripal 👍 Wow the title of the Vlog itself is interesting yet intriguing 👍 So Mitra Samaj who created the MD way back in 1949 👍 What a divine feeling it is to visit the temple and following with yet another awesome eatery 👍👍 Last evening my dad and I had Goli Baje with thick coconut chutney 😋😋 The piping hot Mangalore Buns gets validated by Sree Mam as THE BEST ✅ and now form our dear Kripal . Would like to try an authentic Mnagalore Bun ( again a discussion between Tradition and Authentic) 👍 Loved the banter with the adorable kid who has a tremendous confidence along with her own YT channel . This is what we elders need to learn from such kids on how to shed our inhibitions and just feel free to express oneself 👌👏🏼👏🏼 Usually what’s the quantum of a ripe banana that goes into making of the mangalore bun ?? I believe that the spicy chutney and Sambhar compliments the MB 👌 Will try to make the MB once at home . Wow biscuit Roti resembles that of a Kachori ( does it also taste like a typical Kachori) ?? There is difference between..The food and Prsadam.....Jaisa अन्न वैसा मन....Moreover other way.in which mood it's cooked. THAT ENERGY FLOWS. other Side of u ..Speaking. Marathi as well as Telgu.its the best way to come closer to people. I born in Punjabi family..but In हरियाणा. So know Punjabi and haryanvi..My great grandparents from Pakistan Punjab..so Urdu..and counting in Pashto..Stayed in andhra So learnt Telgu to manage 3 years. Masala Dosa was originated in Woodlands Hotel (Udupi Brahmin Cousin Restaurant) in Chennai. Offcourse, Mitra Samaj is famous Goli Baje, Idli/Vada Sambar, Biscuit Rotti, Kayi Holige and Udupi style lunch meal

Hi.... Am a part time car driver, I had been there 10 to 12 times especially for breakfast n evening. when I visit udupi my fav mangaluru bonda, dosa n coffee.... But i did not come across first they started masala dosa.......

I was always under the impression that the “masala” in the masala dosa refers to the “palya”. So I was surprised when Kripal said that the inside of the masala dosa usually has a coating. That would be a Mysore masala dosa - the one that has a red chutney coating inside and is usually folded in a triangular shape. Can someone please confirm or debunk this ? Thanks. By the way it was very nostalgic seeing my old haunts of Diana and Mitra Samaj. I was a regular almost 40 years ago when I attended dental college in Manipal.

There is Satyanarayana Seeta Nadi hotel (not the new hotel), on the foot hills of agumbe if you ever go by that route. Food is home made, neerdosa with coconut and jaggery, buns, avalakki, golibaje, etc are served. Locals go there. You can try if you ever come to Udupi through that route.

It is also said that the masala dosae was invented in Mysore railway station,when those in a hurry got their masala stuffed into the dosae. Mr SeetharamaRao,who later founded Dasaprakash hotel in Chennai. Truly,success has many fathers!!

Unfortunately we did not have a good experience when we visited last time. There were no options but idli and Vada. There was just one person taking everybody's orders and took too much time to serve. Maybe it was a bad day for them and us. Will try visiting again sometime.

Sai, try to get there early if possible. Places like these usually make limited batches each session, and when they run out, that's it.

Thanks for the video. The whole car street and near Krishna temple needs a redevelopment similar to what is done in Varanasi. Need to hire a good architect and during that time, provision can be made on one side to have bigger space for restaurants such as Mitra Samaj. Dhanyavad.

It was 😔 to see, no localite (ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ) said hello to Kripal, what could be the hindrance/inhibition? Though kripal promotes kannada with actual words like dose for dosa, says all dishes names in kannada.

Had been to Mitra samaj last month on ur recommendation.U should definitely visit Raghunath cafe at Karkala...People swear by their filter coffee.Happy travelling

@@KripalAmannaVlogs It's a small eatery but known for its filter coffee and varieties of neer dosas.They also sell home sourced sweet potato chips, jackfruit chips and banana chips.Their peanuts are to die for.They serve touvvey(lentil dal) instead of sambhar with idli wada.. something unique.They do serve awesome otta shaavige too.

Kripal you missed out on badam halva there. It is special and as old as the hotel. No other hotel has been preparing badam halva in udupi that I know of.
