"Eldrazi Winter", "Hogaak Summer", and now "The Scam of '23" will go down in MTG Modern history. While I don't like Grief, I do see Fury as the bigger issue at the time of the ban. Maybe we'll see some interesting decks or maybe it'll get banned eventually, but one thing's for sure, I don't know what they were smoking when they banned Fury but didn't unban anything to deal with Yugi-boy.
@@neonmushroom6763 I have yet to play Modern, so I don't know how Yawgmoth Winter will be, but I'm hoping Hammer makes a comeback at some point during the next year.
Honestly I like these bans. I'm going to wait until the format settles a bit before giving my thoughts on the fury vs grief ban because honestly unless they banned both cards I don't know which of the two was going to be the most impactful for the overall meta
I have the same thoughts, I mentioned that some of the tribal decks might come back, but banning grief only really would kill scam dead and hurt living end, whereas fury can be more problematic across multiple decks. It's like when they banned opal (still not sure how I feel) but it really just killed affinity and lantern, then affinity came back.
I dont think anyone was saying fury being gone would make their crewture decks good again. They know better, that its just not possible. But Fury not being a dominant part of the format means they have a chance to pick up a winning record occasionally if they're running hot, instead of it being impossible to take games let alone matches off of decks. Im with you that Grief is the stronger card, but WotC does everything possible before they ban the keystone of a deck. Theres a reason Mycosynth Lattice is banned.
Yeah I can definitely see the argument for Fury. And to be clear, I think the way scam abuses the card is unhealthy. I just think the majority of non games are coming from getting thoughtseized 2-3 times before you draw your second card. Pair that with a 4/3 with menace and the games done quick
I don't think the small creature deck players will care if Humans, D&T, Elves, Goblins, or Fish isn't a tier 1 deck. I think the fact they aren't faced with a 0 mana board clear played in half the meta decks will be enough to bring some of those players back. Saying that if a deck isn't a top meta contender capable of taking down a GP it isn't worth playing is such a toxic spike mindset.
Personally I think all of the incarnations should have got axe’d. Or at least Solitude, Fury, and Grief. 0 mana for Thoughtsieze, Swords to Plowshares, and Pyrotechnics/kinesis is, turns out, pretty freakin good. Endurance is still really good, and subtlety is still very playable, but they feel more safety-valve-esc compared to the other guys who are just, format annihilating.
tbh i think fury was the only one that really should have been banned. Yeah Solitude kills big stuffs, but it’s a 2 for 1 90% of the time. Fury even when you pitch resolves like 3/4 permanents on board and even without that in Scam was a 3 turn clock 1T. Grief was close i think but ultimately Fury was the right decision
Bowmasters, The One Ring, Grief and Up the Bean Stalk should all been banned. Fury just kept fast creature deck in check. What would have been best would have been a errata to evoke, make the evoked creature gain shroud until end of turn, so then you couldn’t scam any of them out anymore.
One thing about scam in legacy is that its fairly balanced in the format. Ive seen monoblack and blue black scam/deaths shadow. Both decks are absolutely beatable
Banning fury definitely makes merfolk, elves, and humans better, maaaybe even infect a little though they still have to dodge Solitude. I would have still liked to have seen grief banned, make opponent discard two and have a 4/3 menace on turn one is brutal and scam will just move to Orzov colours.
@neonmushroom6763 I think so, not as good but if you look back to when MH2 dropped lots of MTG content creaters like spike and saffron dabbed a bit in it.
WOTC: Makes both a detailed video and post explaining exactly why they chose to ban fury instead of grief, detailing how it opens up 1 drop creatures for play, and the design space in general whilst taking two of the top decks in the format down a peg. That they're leaving Orcish Bowmaster's to help keep aggro in check. Repeatedly point out that they try not to do multiple bans of cards in the same deck at the same time, in case one is enough. You: Should have been Grief. Me: *face palm*
Ugh, another Phyrexian invasion with Yawgmoth it seems... this time it's for real, lol. I also predicted that he would theoretically take over once Fury goes.
They got the correct card. The issue as a whole is that the Elementals should have been either instant or sorcery spells. Like Swords to Plowshares, The subtlety effect as an instant, Hymn to Tourach, Flameslash with added walker target, and Endurance also as an instant spell.
They banned Beans because its a card draw engine that pushed The One Ring out of relevance. And Beans is an uncommon in a standard set vs T1R being the chase card in LotR sets, especially the holiday set. I believe they kept Grief over Fury because ppl keep complaining about how not viable creature decks are. So WotC hopes ppl investing into their creature decks beats out the money made out of Fury. Especially since MH2 is officially out of print & can change the MH3 print list how they wish. Its purely about money and WotC saw people taking a mass exodus out of modern gameplay
@@neonmushroom6763 A conspiracy would mean an end goal A corporation prioritizing money has nothing to do with "conspiracy" or an "end goal" lol. It's literally their purpose - to make money That's like saying it's a conspiracy for a lion to hunt
@neonmushroom6763 look at you mad because you were too reactionary. The bankbuster comparison was just so poor It's a criticism of the comparison not you.
Man, I just finished my modern wizard deck and picked up Fury last week for sides. I thought they would hit grief tbh cuz double thoughtseize is more frustrating than a 4/4 double strike. But Grief does die to bolt even with the wicked role, maybe that's what WoTC was thinking
Hear me out, banning Fury makes sense IF they banned bowmasters. As well. I think those 2 cards would’ve been a good ban at the same time (plus the ring because no bowmasters means ring is busted).
Yeah if they delt with bowmasters then yawg would be a normal tier one deck, so the lack of fury wouldn't hurt so bad. I really think hitting bow boy would have been smart
People have been yelling about fury for years and how it destroyed creature decks that were seeing fringe play before mh2 released. Fury was not a well designed card but banning it will not make elves and humans tier 1 again, it will make Yawg really good. I would have rather had grief banned but Orzhov scam shutting out a solitude turn one is much less threading than a fury so I guess I’ll take it. Also beans was busted and deserved to be banned but I thought they would wait another standard set before touching it
Given the choice between the two, bearing in mind that I don't play modern but if I did I'd play infect, I'd go with double thoughtseize vs one-sided boardwipe that will probably be a 4/4 double strike any day of the week. But that's me looking at it from kinda the outside.
@@neonmushroom6763 True as well. But....infect is 1 or 2 CMC for 90% of the deck. I realize that I'm just looking at a very specific tree rather than the forest, too.
Engagement comment! Also, playing paper Magic scares me because there’s a less than zero chance that I might have to see a girl and they have cooties and are scary and smell nice
I agree on banning grief but fury should have got he ban as well. as it keeps any x/1's out of play as you can just clean there board and was left with a 6 power creature cause fury being a 3 power double striker. grief should be gone now cause scam is gonna be black white now and you can just pick there 3 best cards out of there hand when you ephemerate your grief and then you have a 3/2 menace and your oppenant has no way to deal with it as you took all there removal from them.
I honestly doubt BW scam is going to even be a contender. Sure you get grief scam, but you're missing the good cards, fable, bolt, moon, rags, collapse, kroxa, spyro ect
Took a bath on my borderless fury playset but hey, happy my goryos atraxa deck is alive with t1 ephemerate grief…. And once that goes, I guess I’ll go back to playing UR wizards 🤷
Sorry but this is a SUPER selfish comment. But I've been having... Shroom withdrawals? A while back you asked if there was interest in an arena content only channel. Was there enough interest for you to start that content?
Yawgamoth... Think its the new necropotence. lol. Necropotence was good like 20 years ago. There are so many ways around that combo these days it's dumb. Go under, go over, counterspells, exile. The best deck in modern is still scam. But it's orzhov now.
@@neonmushroom6763 Yawgmoth might have some good stuff but at least it isn't killing all your creatures, making your discard your whole hand sometimes. I dunno how it plays out in the wild. I just know I am sick of playing against scam decks.
Maaaan i get so triggered from listening to Pleasant Kenobi... Man modern is modern it is okay you don't have wide strats in the game i like it more that way....
Bing bong get scammed. Modern is getting stale because it’s still gonna do things. I can see them switch to orzhov or something and grief will keep running away
I mean I’ve been toying around with the same concept but use a control shell with dimir so subtlety and grief and splashing some white for solitudes it’s pretty gross
you're forgetting the best part of the fury ban. PEOPLE CANT COMPLAIN THAT THEIR SHITTY CREATURE DECK ISNT PLAYABLE BC OF FURY. Also I think fury banned has killed scam completely so its essentially a ban on scamming grief as well
@clashcitycretin10 black white scam is bad. It was bad at the beginning of mh2 and its bad now. White cards are just not good enough compared to ragavan, blood moon, fable etc
