What a Land Girl was: "The Women's Land Service was formed to supply labour to keep New Zealand agriculture going during the War. From 1940, city girls from the age of seventeen were sent to assist on sheep, cattle, dairy, orchard and poultry properties. Many had the experience of arriving at a remote destination late at night and starting work the next morning as a farm-hand, when they had never been close to a sheep. They learned to ride horses, train and whistle up dogs, muster and shear sheep, plough and harvest crops, and to master all the myriad tasks of rural industries, often without electricity."

Have you been to the South Island yet? If not, check out the Clay Cliffs at Omarama. The formations there are very similar but, as you can tell by the name, are clay not stone - and access is a LOT easier!!

I went to the Pinnacles 5 or 6 years ago. I was aware of danger of falling rock, but I don't remember anyone saying you were not allowed to go. Never went up the look out, just walked up to the end of the Pinnacles via the stream bed

Thank you for another great video. Featherston also has the Fell Locomotive Museum. They were specifically designed locomotives to climb over the Rimutakas before they built the train tunnel. The road used to be a lot worse forty years ago. I never knew the pinnacles existed!

The safer similar one to visit is the Clay Cliffs in Omarama, South Island

I live not that far away from there but I have never seen or heard of this valley before. Amazing, and very brave of you to attempt that washed out track.

Great vid, you should have gone more south past the pinnacles through ngawi to the seal colony, an then 5 more minute drive to the light house 200+ steps up to it, maybe next time if your still in welly, excellent vlogging, enjoy NZ, cheers!

if you guys are still near wellington and would like something unique to do at night, would recommend going into the botanic gardens and finding the glow worms - they're like magic starlight along the side of the path! also check out Zelandia if you'd like to see some New Zealand native birds and amazing restored native forest only 5 minutes away from the city (and parking is free ;) )

Thanks for the great information! Believe it or not over here in Eastbourne in the bush paths there’s heaps of glow worms we actually have seen recently for the first time! It was beautiful 😍

Another epic hike from you guys! I live in Upper Hutt and I have been past but not done the walk. Can I recommend a day hike if you visit Queenstown, South Island. If you drive a further 90 minutes past Queenstown along lake Wakatipu to the Routeburn road end shelter (through Glenorchy then 'Paradise' Lord of the Rings filming sites) you can spend a 7 hour return day walk to Routeburn Falls Hutt and back. This day walk is part of the famous Routeburn Track and I have completed the whole walk January plus this year then went back for the day walk in April this year (7 hours good track return, 1,100 metres of uphill elevation and around 22km). You will enjoy magnificent river valley and mountain scenery and nature including NZ's smallest bird (Rifleman or Titipounamu) that will fly up to you and land at your feet. You two are easily strong enough to complete this walk (there is public transport shuttle available Queenstown to the start of the walk if you search on the Net) I hope you will experience other short walks around Mount Aoraki and South Island Mountains/SH94 Milford Sound Road.

hey Mike! thanks, brother for the special words! Really appreciate your kind words and the fantastic hike recommendation! It sounds like an incredible day hike to Routeburn Falls Hutt with stunning scenery and the chance to encounter NZ's smallest bird. We'll definitely keep this in mind for our future travels to Queenstown and the South Island. Your enthusiasm for the outdoors and nature is inspiring, and we'll be sure to explore the short walks around Mount Aoraki and the Milford Sound Road as well. We also have the Kelper track booked so that will be something to look forward too! ;)

Pronounce Putangirua as put-tanga-rua. The Wairarapa has so much to offer, I am pleased to see you made the effort to go. If you have time go out the same way and keep on driving. Check out Ngawi and Cape Palliser. Stop and see the seals. Admire Kupe's sail and the wild geology. Look for ancient beaches lifted high by previous earquakes. Stay at the Lake Ferry Hotel for a taste of history pubs and great food.

If you are brave drive up the coast to Pōrangahau. This earthquake central. The geology is actively moving. If you look you will see the roads are constatly sliding downhill and are being remade every few years.
