They WORK SO WELL The Hunting Industry Hates Them - Sig Zulu 6 HDX Image Stabilizing Binoculars

I dive deep into image stabilizing binoculars for the hunting application, and where I think the technology is going within the industry. It will be interesting to see how quickly this technology is adopted by the mainstream hunting optic companies. I'm guessing adoption will be slower than most folks think. Along the way, I'm covering all the current pros and cons of the image stabilizing binoculars on the market today.
In particular, I cover the SIG ZULU 6 HDX Image Stabilized Bino. I used this optic for six hunts this last Fall, several mountain goat hunts and archery/rifle elk hunts.

The Zulu 6 are probably the best Bino’s I have ever used. I got a pair this summer and can’t believe the animals I missed with my old pair. The stabilization let’s you see movement and things you otherwise miss. Can’t wait to hunt with them.

I changed to 10x42 Swaro’s 7 years ago from Luepold’s and , I always carry a tripod for my Luepold spotting scope anyways, but I’m 68 and the added expense wouldn’t be better than the binoculars I use. But you have a very valid point. Now if they came out with a spotting scope that had IS, would be a different story. Spotting sheep on a windy day, it’s a little shaky, lol. Thanks for the review

Switched to the 12x Zulu 6 HDX this year and they are simply amazing. The first day out on my elk hunt this year I was giggling to myself the whole time because of how awesome they are. The glass is actually very good quality as well. I haven't looked through the older ones but the HDX glass is great for the price, much better than expected. I'll probably never go back to standard binos.

Awesome video. I have the zulu6 16s and I’ve been very successful at finding game with them. I found a decent tripod mounting solution. The battery bulge on the bottom of the binos fits well into the sunwayfoto SM-76 saddle mount, especially if you apply a little form padding to the inside of the saddle mount. Hopefully bigger objectives and range finding options aren’t too far off. I’m interested in the 12s but will probably stick with the 16s for at least a couple more seasons.

Regarding what you said at the end, the gohunt guys did a podcast with reps from Sig and they basically said that at this time they are not developing a rangefinder model or looking into integrating better glass so I think for at least a year there should be no changes. The Gohunt guys are also pretty stoked about the Zulus by the way.

I guide up in Alaska and my outfitter got these from SIG to test. A bunch of us used them, I loved them personally. If I needed to break apart some brush outside of the range for my 10x42’s it was a quick transition and was nice not having to pull out my spotting scope. My only gripe was the battery life. But other than that they are pretty sweet!

I have the 20x42 Zulu6 and they are truly game changing especially as a chest binocular that fits in the same case that used to hold my 10x42s! You can actually one hand these in the wind in target mode which I run 90% of the time. All that function for around $1k? Perfect glass for next week's late season AZ bull elk hunt. BTW, they are actually brighter than you would expect during prime time because the OIS makes sure all of the available light ACTUALLY reaches your pupil in a way your brain can more easily concentrate on.

Fellow colorblind hunter here🫡 I appreciate this review, I’ll hang on to my NL 12s for now but might pick some up for my son. I think I need the better glass and the Zulus are using Chinese glass. Regarding the field of view with these, especially compared to the wide FOV of the NLs and the edge to edge clarity, I think I benefit from a tripod plus NLs vs a pair of these. Also, even if the image is super stabilized id still want a tripod to not have to hold them all the time especially while gridding, as you touched on. If I was one of these 3-10 day out in the bush types hauling my camp everywhere I go I might not want to lug my tripod around, but as it is my tripod situation is a non issue as far as packing it around and deploying it.

I would think it wouldn’t be that hard to just put a rangefinding mode in them. And when they’re in that mood, the image stabilization is not active. I would think that would solve the problem and the battery life issue. But I’m sure there’s more to it than I am aware of.

I use a Panasonic video camera that has a 50x optical zoom and can zoom up to 150x. I have compared this to my spotting scope with a phone adapter. The weight and size is a big benefit, but one of the biggest things I noticed this year was image stabilization. Recording through my spotting scope was shaky because of wind. Recording through the Panasonic was completely stable. The only downside that I've had with the Panasonic is autofocus when there is stuff between me and an animal it will try and focus on the stuff.

I have been using 10x sig 6k LRF Binos and 20x Zulu 6 this year and can say I don't need my vortex razor 65mm spotter. The image I get through the sig mag view is identical. I totally agree with your cons, the 20x sig Zulu 6 is trash in low light. I have thought having a tripod mount would be helpful too. For me, the tripod mount would help reducing arm fatigue during the long glassing sessions. Keep up the good work!

Amazing video as always Cliff You dropped a big bomb before heading out to the bathroom (insert joke here). Does the ability to spot movement offset the lack of clarity in low light? Would you recommend these for hunting the grey ghost (Coues Deer), or for something like that does low light resolution Trump movement detection through stabilization? Would love a follow up video where you tell us some hunting stories about how these delivered for you in the field.
@CliffGray
@CliffGray 6 месяцев назад
ha! Generally the IS trumps lowlight performance... but it's relative, right? If we are talking about the last itty bitty 20 mins, which is critical for some hunts, lowlight performance is going to win. A 20x 42mm binocular will essentially be black 10-15minutes before a high end 8x 42mm binocular. for sure on coues deer! would love to see a bigger objective IS bino for that

Great review and thoughts Cliff. Swaro, Leica and Zeiss have access to far superior glass, which is really hard for other brands to get access to. This still justifies the price buffer to brands like Vortex (great marketing) and Sig. Swaro has exceptional glass particularly in low light, but the price point is painful. I don't know if you heard the Sig guys were on the Go Hunt podcast a month or so ago. Basically they use their entry level glass on the image stabilising binos (yes the software makes up partly) but in a couple of years they will migrate the IS models to their higher end glass. The premium brands have a couple of years to develop their own IS software, as this must be where the market goes. Why would you carry a tripod if you don't have to. Can't wait to see where this tech goes!

The stabilization is automatic and in the heat of the moment when your heart is racing it makes all the difference. You can easily range with pinpoint accuracy. Stabilization tech is great if you can afford it, so these binos will suit a lot of people for various applications.

I have a pair of zulu 6 20x42. I'm currently selling them do to 3 factors. While they are absolutely great for not havin to pull your tripod out to glass real quick if traveling from point A to point B but Glass is no where as clear as the more popular glass like leupold or vortex(higher end model), also in low light situations they almost make the image darker compared to the bare eye and last, the eye relief is terrible for me. To far into the cups or a little out and you get the black edges. The other thing I noticed with the zulu 6 is in the 2nd stabilize mode (target mode) makes the image almost blurry or out of focus. I sit and glass for hrs so I'm still always going to mount to a tripod and clear glass and light emission is more important for me than stabilization

Good info for folks to consider! When I first saw your comment I assumed you got sick from them. I have had a lot of clients use mine and about 1/4 of them get a little vertigo if glassing with them for long duration. The lower mags might be better for you… a 42mm is just tiny for 20x magnification

I'm a commercial fisherman and fish tuna for several years as a captain and I will say that the image stabilizing binos are the biggest moneymakers on the entire boat fire the crew and you would still make money fishing just by yourself. My first year I used regular Bushnell binos then we got the IS binos and the increase in profit was incredible. We have been using fujinans technostabies for about 10 years now and their customer service is great but their biggest downside has to be that they weigh about 5 lb and use four batteries. I definitely have to try out one of these sigs! I currently robbed the binos off the boat for hunting season and it's always a big debate do I take them or not because they're so bloody heavy.

Get the canon 10x42 ISL. I commercial fish also (AK salmon) and use the techno stabies on the boat cause they have 6 deg of stabilization. The canons are only 1 deg, but it’s enough on land to take out hand shake and they are much more portable. Also they are very durable I’ve unfortunately dropped mine like 10 times over the years. The FOV penalty for the high magnification is such a turn off for me. If its possible to get to a 10x with a 350' fov i feel like so many guys who work in pairs would jump into these. Then our kits would consist of these for spotting movement anywhere, a pair of highend binos for the clarity and low light performance, and spotter for judging. What are your thoughts?

Does anyone know of any image stabilization binos with a rangefinder built in? Probably a long shot considering the tech sort of fights each other.
@bobinmontana777
@bobinmontana777 6 месяцев назад
Cliff, you summed up most industries and why consumers are at the mercy of many industries trying to squeeze all the profit they can (can’t blame them) from existing tech. Take cell phones for instance, terrestrial based towers will be replaced by satellite communication. Way back, Nicola Tesla had a system to broadcast electricity without poles and wires, but that would have made it difficult to meter and control by monopolistic industry. I have experienced reel to reel recording, through 8 track to cassette and cd, dvd and digital. In each case, industry squeezed profit out of the technologies. However, that’s good for capitalism, some new company will step up and produce improved optical products. I am currently looking for the best, lightest I.S. Monocular.

Thanks Bob, interesting stuff 👍 like you say eventually good capitalism pushes the technology out via competition!

I think the crazy thing is the price point that they are at and the horrible length of warranty

Do you think the optic quality (aside from the field of view) is comparable to regular optics of the same price (i.e. the 12x $1k set you have compared to another $1k 12x bino)?
@CliffGray
@CliffGray 6 месяцев назад
Probably slightly less - more like a $500 pair. But honestly it's hard to say, splitting hairs a bit.

Cliff if you don’t have time to respond to this I get it your a busy man. I hunt white tails and waterfowl in the east, also elk and deer in the west. Would you recommend the 8x30 or the 10x42

12x42 The Bino is so light already, the 42 is great. Better low light performance also compared to the 30. Good luck man! 👍👍👍

canon has a 15x50 I.S. bino there kinda big but i'm about ready to try something new. i found a deer in a hard to find deer area but it took me till last 10 min on light to find it. I probly was looking at it all day and was never stable enough to reconize it untill it flicked its tail and light moved just right. but in all that saying, might make a pro out of a beginner. i'm ready to try something new if it don't work out oh well. asfar as range finding goes not a issue for me now if i can rang it I cant shoot it, and its still a separate unit on me now. I think it wount get pushed untill theres a huge amount of pro guys pushing it but still complaining. if the sales are there they will find a way to make the buck.

How's the optic quality compared to Canon 10x42L IS? Its crazy that it only uses 1 AA battery. Its sad that Canon doesn't seem to be interested in this market. Their 10x42L has been around for more than 12 years without updates.

It's more worth it for you than someone that already has binos. Buy right the first time and be happy for years to come. Hands down the best binos I've ever looked through. And for the price you can't do any better. Just make sure you get the HDX version. Lightyears ahead of any standard binos that you could get for the same price.

It's not new tec at all. Although those sig binos are nice. I would definitely use them for truck Glass or to replace my 10s maybe. I would not be able to replace my 15s or anything like that with them.

Cliff, do you have any concerns regarding the reliability of this IS technology? I mean, if that feature fails on a hunt you are left holding a very mediocre piece of glass, as they are currently offered....

The technology has been around for years. Canon has used it for a very very long time in their professional camera lenses. And there IS Binos have been used by the military, marine industry and stargazer's as well for years.

haha, no prob. I think the majority of people, on the majority of hunts could probably get away with no longer using a tripod/spotter. A guy might even consider the 12x on his chest and the 20x in his bag. Dropping the spotter/tripod all together.

fuk yeah thanks Cliff. I never knew of these before. I live and die by my tripod while hunting. Im 1000% more effective using my tripod. I too am very prone to motion sickness. I have the same problem with video games. I went to watch the movie Saving Private Ryan in the theatres as a kid and got so sick from the first 30 minutes of that movie I had to leave. Scanning with binos without using my tripod makes me feel the same way of motion sickness. If these impact my sense of motion sickness like your saying than Im going to have to try them 100%. thanks again bro
