Thich Nhat Hanh, interview Part 1 | Ram Dass Channel

Ram Dass interviews Thich Nhat Hanh at State of the Wold forum. Thich Nhat Hanh talks about using mindfulness to take tender loving care of our anger. Being aware and mindful of our breathing helps us to take good care of our emotions. Our anger is like a flower that needs the sunshine of our mindfulness. Our western culture focuses mostly on the intellect, but mindfulness is more important. The insight of impermanence should be understood in our daily life. Everything is impermanent and is made of everything else.

I wholeheartedly believe a large portion of humanity’s peace of mind can be credited to these two men’s teachings and message they’ve come to pass they lived with their lives. Their contributions are immeasurable and I personally recognize them as saints.

Thay's wise words: "If we are aware that America is made of non-American elements, we are safe. And suppose America realizes that she is made of non-American elements., in that case, it's better for her to take care of non-American elements in order to protect herself and make her truly happy." That is an intellectual and brilliant philosophy for a multiracial country like the United States forever.

Non American elements to be taken care of. American people believe our strength is in our diversity. To go deeper America benefits from our cultural diversity in many ways because we are all one people. Out of the many are one. Knowing this on a deeper level of our humanity.

@ariahpapaya7583 4 года назад
I noticed neither of them respond to an opportunity to have their ego stroked. You can see that Ram admires Thich, almost in an endearing, loving way, but Thich almost seems unaffected or stoic. He responds to every question with equanimity. This is not bad, it's just interesting to see that certain social gratuities just don't apply when two gurus sit before each other. When two beings know they are at the spirit level, the same, who is there to impress? What is there to prove? There's no ass to kiss! There's no tension in awkward silence. There's no short fuses, there's just an exchange.

@@arshnoorsingh5531 I would say (though not to negate anything else you offered) that where Ram Dass and Hahn differ isn’t over intellect, but between Bhakti and Compassion. Ram Dass figured out how to maximize emotion safely, and Hahn sought to minimize the excesses of emotion. They are on parallel paths, and they can see each other clearly and without conflict. It’s a pleasure to watch the conversation unfold.

Agree that Ram Dass has love and respect for Thich. Ram Dass however did not refer to himself as a Guru. That was something thrust upon him from the outside, the media etc. To his credit he saw himself as a pupil. Neem Karoli Baba, a Sadguru, was his primary teacher.

Anger is pain in disguise. Frustration and anger are a killer cocktail. Just as the monk said, the only way to change a situation is to nurture yourself by focusing on breathing and becoming aware of your feelings. I tried this on myself and when I let anger take over, the situation got unbearably worse. I saw that the world is made of energy and Consciousness has creative magnetic energy thus by focusing on awareness, the energy of the One will take over and heal or fix the problem because nothing is controlled by the egoic self.

Is anger ever justified since it is about our wrong perceptions? I held anger for many years and robbed myself of a loving relationship I could have had with my parents. Now they are gone. I’m not quite sure how to reconcile with this in their absence. Now my job is harder. Now I know what heartache my anger caused for my parents, for myself. Such grief I could have lived without and yet my grief has been my greatest teacher in compassion .

I had a very hard lesson to learn this week ! I had one of my horses come down sick ! Joker the horse was 26 years old and would have been 27 on April 2nd next year ! I tried my best to help him and keep him alive ! I knew that he had to want to live also ! Sadly Wednesday morning Joker passed away ! I buried him that afternoon ! Monday morning when it all started I called the vet ! He came out and gave Joker some shots and told me to walk him ! I did for 6 hours straight out in the heat which was around 110 degrees out ! I had to stop walking him because I couldn't walk anymore ! Tuesday Joker seemed a little better ! But Wednesday morning he was gone ! I had helped deliver Joker as his right hoof was stuck inside his mother this was at 10pm the night of April 2nd ! So Joker was kinda like a child to me as my wife and I didn't have children of our own ! She had 3 sons from a earlier marriage ! So the horses was our children ! I lost my wife 5 years ago to brain cancer ! So I have taking care of the horses since then ! I learned that I had to let him go for his well being not for my wants ! I was very angry about not being able to save him but he is not hurting anymore ! That is what is important to me is to not let any of my animals suffer for my wants but what is best for them !

Well spoken, Anger is not us, nor are we anger-- Anger is related to hatred and one off the five hindrances to progress on the eightfold path. Anger is fire in the brain--. Anger is overcome by non anger. Conceptually, the elements make up the flower, but without a plan how to organize these, it could be anything-- And the plan has to be there before the actual flower is created and continues to exist at least as long as the flower exists, and therefore has some permanence -- happiness is impermanent, being attached to it creates more suffering, if its not there, one is longing for it, once its there, its the fear, that its ending again, once its gone its the grief having lost happiness dharma is not about gaining happiness. Dharma is about overcoming suffering once and for all.

one person at a time...starting with Her ... Your 'family' is the whole world and as placating as that may sound it is still the truth. My family is constantly changing. my history is not me. What happen to all of us and what we did is really all we could do, we did it and we did the best with what we were, had and could.. the point i think, i've been wrong before, is what i do now.

the dysfunction within a family usually goes totally unnoticed by that family in order to preserve the dysfunction. each member is designated a role. the roles change depending on who is present. some times one person plays two roles at a time in a given situation. if the dynamic calls for four people and there are only three present. to heal from the toxic behaviors you have internalized from your family you Must do it outside of the dynamic. 'Those participating in the toxic dynamic are not a source of discovery! first you must name the dynamic and it's function. always part of the function of a toxic dynamic within a family is the 'dynamics survival' !! when it is threatened you become the 'target' for the other participants. at the core of the dynamic is a lie. to state the lie outright within the dynamic is not tolerated by the entire membership of the family. Talking brings resolution when it is honest and for reconciliation., In a toxic family dynamic it is not allowed and individuals cannot speak their own truth and have their own voice and there own experience. "you can not say that" is common dialog within this dynamic. you you you...everyone working to keep the individual bound to the lie. I statements are true but you statements are a distorted perspective through an interpretation even when it's with good intention. we cannot know anything other than what 'we' have experienced and have no license to dictate to others ...that's totalitarianism at it's best. So called schizophrenics diagnosed in childhood when removed from the family system completely stopped demonstrating the behavioral traits of schizophrenia and became healthy people. this has been demonstrated case after case and is the proof that it is the toxic belief and interaction between members of the family that are the cause not a chemical imbalance or heredity. remove yourself from the situation, seek a good toxic dynamic family therapist and walk down a path to a happy life. we can't change Anyone but OURSELVES. staying in a toxic environment is like NOT leaving a burning ship. and courage is the ability to love when afraid. n you have to start with your self to be able to love.
@daisycypresstulipgarden2131
@daisycypresstulipgarden2131 9 лет назад
Charlie Hutch That is the best comment I have ever seen. Thank you. What you said is the absolute truth. It is best to leave that old environment. The one statement I have to keep. Can I quote you to other people? I will put your name under it. "Courage is the ability to love when afraid." (Charlie Hutch) I copied this and will post under other people's comments. I would always do things for others when I am afraid. But I have to begin now to do things for myself also. I just don't know how to do the leap forward in my life now. My husband does unempowerment techniques with me unknowingly. It is not good.
