Back in the day when I was a teenager, I went to get my hair cut, and the stylist said "wow, you have really fine hair" and I said, "thank you". I thought he was giving me a compliment on my hair, lol.

In my country, most people have thin hair. Decades ago, when my mom was in USA and went to have haircut in some famous hair dresser's and all the employees wanted to check my mom's hair like it was some miracle to see such thin hair. 🙄

This is one of those core memories I would think about every day of my life... Got at least 30 years later 😂 I was smoking pot many years ago. I was with a good friend and we were enveloped in the deepest thought provoking discussions. He said something profound and I was stoned so I just said "Life is short". With the most serious expression, he looks me in my eyes, then at his shorts, and with a straight face back at me to say, "Thank you. had em forever."

As a person with fine and thin hair, I can say all of this is true. Vitamin deficiency is a main reason for falling hair. Never overlook your nutrition.
@dmweisbr
@dmweisbr 5 месяцев назад
Nutrition is important, for sure. But even the best nutrition won’t stop hair loss due to aging. Anyone losing hair should get help from a dermatologist to determine the cause. Some causes can be easily treated, others take more extreme measures. But if you don’t know what’s causing it, you could waste a lot of time and money on treatments that won’t help.

My Hair was falling out in handfuls after shampooing just once with K18 daily shampoo. It was scary so I asked Mr Google for help and found a mixture, can't remember the recipe but it was with onion juice. It stopped my hair falling out after a couple of weeks phew, but left my hair even thinner than normal. So I began taking Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 plus massaging my scalp morning and night for a minute or so. The difference one year on is unbelievable everyone now tells me how my, normally thin hair, is thick!!

I have taken Castor Oil Capsules for years and my hair shines and is really strong and my skin has always been very clear and smooth. At a recent hospital clinic the female consultant actually asked me how my skin and hair look so good and said both were better than many young women she sees . Castor oil capsules treat from inside . They also keep eyelashes growing thick and healthy and lips full and smooth , and nails very strong and healthy . They aren't expensive to buy . So go on , everyone and try those capsules .Within about 2 weeks you'll see a massive change .

Having a lot of fine hair can be a test in patience (especially when washing and styling) but I’m glad it’s not thin and hasn’t thinned out as I age. I’d love to see a dedicated styling video for fine yet thick hair. Product recommendations, tips and tricks etc. no one does them as the ones I have seen are always about thin hair. I need more product because my hair is thick but since it’s fine I get the “ she didn’t wash her hair” look fairly easily.

Awesome. I have fine hair and I live in a dry, high altitude environment. It's static city. My hair is heavy and thick though. I have a short inverted A-line because my long hair would break in the wind. I use a round brush and gel to form and try to make my hair have more texture. (In the case of thinning hair, I know PCOS is a huge reason. Whole foods, plant based eating is the way to go.) Love your hair videos and hikes! I thought when my silky fine hair turned grey/silver/pewter/steel/white, I'd have more body. Didn't happen. I rarely use conditioner because I don't need it. I'm tired of it being halfway down my back. After the first of the year when things calm down, I'm going back to above-the-shoulder length. Having it this long helps nothing. It's usually piled on my head or in a ponytail anyway. New year, new look. 😊

Many thanks for this. 💕For sure there are challenges with fine hair and more so as you get older when it tends to thin …me …but aside from the right hair products I’ve always had the best and at times amazing results with hairdressers that know how to do a ‘precision cut’ for your hair … especially for short fine hair. They are usually but not always in higher end salons. For example in Vancouver Canada I used to go to Suki’s salon many years ago … and got the best of both cuts and colour recommendations. Made all the difference. Don’t under estimate a ‘good cut’ suited to not only your hair type but also your facial features!😍 A good talented/trained hairdresser will know what works best for you/your hair.

I'm glad that you are teaching about this Justin. There is much misconception about fine and thin hair. I think about it in terms of a forest that has skinny trees( fine hair). A forest with a lot of skinny trees looks full (thick hair). A forest with not many skinny trees looks thin (thin hair). I learned that my hair is baby fine, but thankfully I have a lot of it. I feel for the people that have fine and thin hair. So much harder to work with than just fine hair. A very common cause of thinning hair is thyroid issues.

But here is a situation I never expected to face ---- I was hospitalized for emergency surgery for 4 days and had no friends or family or even makeup with me. I didn't even have a brush. The hospital gave me a comb but I had no access to shampoo or a way to wash my hair. After 2 days it was so dirty and greasy I was disgusted. My blonde hair looked brown and was flat against my head. Gross. As soon as I got home the first thing I did was wash my hair. I decided that I would buy one of those turban style head covers and fold it up and tuck it into my purse. From now on I will be prepared!

That's awesome! I'm so glad I could help! Another thought is to actually add lowlights that are only about a shade darker than your natural hair color. This will make the highlites pop even more and add even more dimension at the same time. They would be applied at the same time as the highlites. You're just adding another color to the process.

A few things that have helped my fine hair grow in better and appear more dense: 1. Never brush/comb when it’s wet because fine hair is more breakable when it’s wet. My hair is straight so this is easy for me to accomplish and I only brush after it’s dry. Not sure if you can do this with curly hair. 2. Before showering, I hang my hair upside down to make the blood rush to my scalp and do a scalp massage with the help of my paddle brush that has air in it so it gives a little bit when I press it on my scalp. I do it before my shower so my hair doesn’t get oily from the massage. 3. I stopped using tight ponytails to stop the tension breakage occurring at my temples. This tension breakage made my hair look like it’s thinning around my temples. 4. Use high quality leave in conditioner after I get out of the shower when my hair has been towel-dried (but not too much or it will look oily). 5. Use a little hair oil on the very ends after applying the leave-in conditioner. I like the brand OUAI from ULTA because it doesn’t make my hair look oily).
@duncanmacleod7287
@duncanmacleod7287 3 месяца назад
Tight ponytails don't just cause tension breakage they can straight out cause traction alopecia. So your hair wasn't just looking like it was thinning around the temples, it probably was. Over a long enough period you'd eventually lose the hair in those areas.

*56, Low Density, Fine Hair, Changes in Texture* . My hair has always been fine. During Menopause, the shed was REAL. Couple that with a few episodes of the C-19, and several years of bathing in very hard water and I was shook. I altered my diet, stopped coloring and washing my hair daily. I upgraded my hair products, always do a double cleanse (2x/week) and got a shower filter. I'm 2B wavy, with shoulder length light brown hair. I'm a mousse gal for volume and preserving my waves. I used "volumizing" shampoo and condition for years not realizing how stripping it was. The gray is texturally different and loves moisture. I never condition the roots and my hair seems to love squalene. I often use a hair mask for conditioner on mids-ends. My scalp still gets oily after 3 days. I "pineapple" in a silk scrunchie at night and don't brush. Claw clips are my choice over hair bands and I do minimal heat styling, diffusing only at the root. I treat my hair like a precious commodity and it looks so much healthier than it did 5 years ago. Thank you for the great tips Justin.

Thanks, Justin. All good tips! I would add a couple more: 6) don’t use a round brush. That technique stretches all the texture out of fine hair. Turn head upside down & finger fluff as you blow dry; 7) section off & spray dry shampoo just at the roots immediately after you blow dry your shampooed hair; and 8) do a final rinse with cold water, as cold as you can stand it. You will be amazed at how much cleaner and fluffier your hair stays for a lot longer!

My fine hair actually looks better and holds a curl better when I blow dry it and use a curling iron or straightener on it. But I know that blow drying your fine hair, and using hot tools, isn’t always recommended for its health. What do you think? How to safely style fine hair would be my recommendation for a video in the new year. It’s a struggle, especially since I’m trying to grow it out a bit. Plus, I’m older (63) so I want to keep it healthy. Thank you! Enjoy your holidays!

I've been using Conair Easy Start hot rollers for 40 years and the heat has never harmed my hair/ never had hair loss. The set lasts longer when after I blow dry it, I roll my hair, and then apply finesse hairspray. I take the rollers out once they cool down( or wait even longer) and then brush my hair.

As someone with very fine hair, I stopped coloring my hair over a decade ago. It damages my fine hair so that it also gets thin! My hair is still fine but much fuller and healthier than when I colored it. Maybe mine's just delicate, but I think coloring my fine hair would actually work against wanting a fuller look since it falls out much more after a color treatment.

Fine hair that I only wash once a week. I am not using conditioner but I do use a masque I rinse out. I often times let my hair air dry to minimize the amount of time required to blow dry on medium heat (if at all). I brush my hair once in the morning and maybe at bedtime. I do curls, sometimes flat iron, and sometimes nada. I love on my hair by not stressing it and it loves me back.

If this is your first time doing color, or you haven't done it in a long time, make sure to find someone who specializes in color (you can ask the salon for a "color specialist", which may help) or at least one that has extensive practice in the specific color you want ie. highlites of XXXXX color, or lowlights of XXXXXX color etc. Especially if you're doing black lowlights on grey hair.

I'll be honest I am kind of missing a "few" tips in your video ! I have fine, and now also thinning hair, here are the tips that made a difference for me : - have a good brush : go for a flat boarbristle one. Synthetic fibers, plastic and bamboo ones damage fine hair. When I use one I litteraly hear my hair breaking. Also, boar bristles provide a bit of scalp massage that stimulates the folicles, and then help distribute the oil to the lengths. - do NOT use conditioner : honestly "even just the ends" weighs down the hair in a significant manner. - use oil... before : fine hair never gets dirty enough (oil is not dirt!), so most shampoos strip down the hair and scalp, and chaos ensues. If you treat you hair with oil before washing, when you wash your roots, it remains gentle since it grabs the oil first, and since you do not shampoo your ends, they retain enough oil to be nourished. Jojoba oil is all around good, and castor oil (not pure!) is great if you have thinning hair - use heat protectant : protects your hair from frying, game changer for fine hair! From a fine hair beggar who did not have internet growing up, and went through many trials and errors

Thank you for this! I wish more people knew the difference. My hair started thinning several years ago because of some medication I was taking so I stopped taking it. Before my hair could recover, I got Covid and spent 3 weeks in the hospital with Covid pneumonia. About 2 to 3 months after I got out, I started shedding at an alarming rate that I found out was a side effect from Covid. That was 2 years ago and it is recovering slowly ... with care and laser light therapy. But when I look online for good haircuts and styles for thin hair, more often than not I find styles for fine hair ... they will have a full head of hair. Not what I'm looking to find. So discouraging.

Hi Peachy, I noticed you got no reply so thought I would offer up a hair style video which I am following. Check out a video by Janelle O'Shaughnessy on RU-vid titled Why I Am No Longer Getting Layers Cut. She explains it all really well & in fact she does have some layering but only involving the hair growing from the top of her head. I think her advice would work for straight or curly hair. Mine is curly & her tips in that video plus her follow up video (where she trims it herself) are working well for me and are easy to explain to a stylist too. Just put her name and the title of the video into the RU-vid search box.

@@justinhickox Thanks for asking, Justin! 😉 My hair sheds in some sort of cycle and I'm not sure what causes it because it's been happening since I was 18 and forty years later, it's still happening. So when it's shedding, my texture is wiry, frizzy and dry. I am blessed with natural curls so I'll diffuse it to help with volume. My question would be what can I do for styling when it's in the shedding phase? It looks awful and I've recently started using Toppix (game changer) to cover the scalp at the top of my head. I would love to wear it straight but I worry that all the round brushing and flat ironing would be damaging and cause even more hair to fall out. Thanks for your consideration. ❤️

How about oil drops or leave in in conditioners ??? How about brushing hair to distribute the oil in the scalp and keep it cleaner and shiny and less itchy ? Should this be reserved to any other hair type that is not necessarily thinning? Don’t we ALL thin hair as we age ? Doesn’t hair becomes finer because of loosing pigment cells in the follicles and so our hair does not contain as much melanin? A lot of stylists like to apply oil drops or mist to make it look shinny and control frizz!! Thank you !! ❤❤❤

@@justinhickoxthank you for saying you'll make more videos about fine hair. Please cover people who have Seborrhea and can't use any oils or styling products on their head. (Also any products just make my hair look dirty and don't hold volume for more than several minutes. ) Also because my hair is literally baby fine, a braid is miniscule, and clips etc simply fall off. Please also cover henna on hair.
@miaschu8175
@miaschu8175 4 месяца назад
@Lili-xq9sn I have fine hair and have been colouring with natural henna and indigo for a number of years, due to severe allergy. According to the literature, these natural dyes coat your hair (rather than penetrating the shaft), so they make your hair stronger and thicker. That might be true, but you have to make sure that the henna mix doesn't dry out on your hair, like clay, because that will pull your hair out when you rinse out the henna. Also, make sure that you are gentle when rinsing out the henna because the mix is much thicker than chemical dyes - it's like mud! I have to break the rules on dying with henna and for thin hair - I use a lot of conditioner after rinsing out the hemma because my hair is very tangled and it feels really soft, so I feel it's in danger of being pulled out if I don't use lots of conditioner. However, it's fine by the next time I wash it a couple of days later. I do lose more hair when dying than I do when just washing, but it isn't excessive. Perhaps it's how I'm going about it. Having said all this, my hairdresser is always impressed with both the colour and the condition of my hair. I think that the henna is much better for it than harsh chemicals. I leave the dye on for hours. I wash my hair, then apply the henna mix when it is just damp (any wetter and you'll have henna running down your face!), wrap it in either a plastic cap or cling film, then in a warm turbi towel to help it work. One good thing about henna and indigo is that they don't dye different colour hair uniformly, so my greys look like highlights. Read lots of literature about it (I recommend "It's Pure") so that you can avoid any of the common mistakes. The only thing that I've ever done wrong is falling asleep with a darker mix than usual over all my hair (instead of just the roots) and having a much darker chestnut than I wanted. You can't lighten naturally dyed hair, so lucky it looked nice!

@justinhickox 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Glad I can help! That's a great question. You're spot on and I don't know the exact answer but I want to look deeper into that now. My intuition would tell me it depends on the amount of oil your skin produces in a combination of the product one would use for volume as well as the overall condition of an individuals hair. Stimulating the scalp can stimulate the sebaceous glands which produce oil and could weigh hair down, where as most volumizing products add the dirty feeling without the heavy oils. So one part of the answer could be that the feeling you have of dirty hair comes from the product which has less oils therefore its a different kind of "dirty". Not sure of that makes sense.
