I'm 53 year old with hair down to my waist, I don't color it, my natural color is brown (I'm Mexican) extra fine, (my daughter says it looks fake b/c at my age is rare to have this kind of hair) just getting some gray hair here and there, shiny lustrous and healthy. Thank you Justin you are right on target! My best tip for women with long hair is to find a stylist who also has long hair! Doing so, I now get great layered cuts, even with my fine silky (beautiful) hair! Most other stylists just assume I want a "Grandma cut" simply cuz I'm over 50. The ageism is deafening!

I'm 75. 15 years ago I looked at my roots and discovered my dad's SILVER. So I let the color grow off. Then when my hubby went to heaven, I wanted pictures to put on FB and other online places, but I didn't like them. So I looked at all my young pictures and found the ones I liked - all long hair. So I started oiling my scalp and hair to increase growth (worked!), and I now have long, silver hair that my hair dresser says women pay a lot of money to match the color. If my hair is long, I can put it up and make it look short and elegant. But if it's short, I can't make it look naturally long.

@laurac9322
@laurac9322 4 года назад
As long as the topic is keeping long hair as we age, it is worth it to point out that for many ( if not most) women, hair thins with age. Hair follicles also stop doing what they used to do. Often the hair at the back of the head may continue to grow long, while the hair at the sides of the head stops growing at a shorter length. The result on women who refuse to notice this is a long, skimpy tail of hair down the center back, with wispy sides. I have had long hair all my life, and I understand wanting to keep it, but I have come to realize that the head of hair actually looks much thicker and healthier when the length is cut straight across at a length that all the hair can still grow to.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 4 года назад
Absolutely a valid point for sure! There are so many different things that I can talk about in a video like this. I’ll definitely be doing more videos that talk about more concerns. I love my long hair and there are several reasons why. First the bony structure of my head doesn’t support short hair. I found that out the hard way. I just need more “fluff” to overcome that. Secondly I have a fantastic hair stylist. Actually she doesn’t style my hair in so much that she keeps my length from getting to long for my age. She respects me but advises me. She keeps it trimmed and softly layered. She’s been taking care of me for 35+ years. And she is the best colorist I know. You’d best not miss an appointment or it’ll be awhile before you get back in! She’s that good. What I’m saying is know yourself, find someone really good, and make regular appointments if you are able to afford them and be thankful you have that person. Last thought: sometimes I will come up with an idea of a new look I want. She ponders it and if she thinks it will work for me she’ll agree. If not I respect her answer. She’s never failed me. And my husband always loves my hair. That says a lot at 74 years of age. Enjoyed your presentation!

WoW! Just found your channel and it is so refreshing to see someone who discusses having long hair and being older...thank you so much for your content!!! I am 54 yrs. old, my original hair color is black, my grays frame my face mostly, but the rest of my hair is still black, and I also have a grey streak which runs from the crown on the right side all the way down, which I've had since I was little and became more apparent as I grew up...I love my long hair and it is hard to find someone in my area who understands long hair, how to cut it and understands the texture change - mine went from sleek straight to course and wavy. I feel if I go with a younger hairstylist they tend to want to cut shorter, and if I go with an older hairstylist they seem to be stuck in the 80's. Thank you for the great ideas...and look forward to watching the videos you mentioned on bangs! And on how to cut your own hair! Thank you again!!!

I keep my hair long to keep it out of my face by simply tying it into a knot. No accessories, no fuss. Looks a touch severe, but works somewhat with my face. For a more stylish look, I simply open the knot, run my fingers through the hair and it already has waves from being in the knot for so long. Not perfect styling, but a worthy compromise for next to no time spent on making it look good. Hair is straight and very smooth, so I don't even need to comb it to keep it tangle free for the most part. If it starts tangling, I need a new haircut. I mostly manage how it looks when not tied up with a good haircut. It is very forgiving hair. If it stops looking good, time to cut again. Length is always slightly more than I need to tie a knot securely, but I do have layers, etc. I like your idea of bangs - this may make the knot look less severe and not add any "work" to keeping hair looking good. More style for same/no effort.
@justinhickox
@justinhickox 4 года назад
Awesome! Yes, I think bangs would be a great option for you. Sometimes adding small things to a style that’s already working, can be JUST enough change to make a huge impact. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out if you decide to try it!

I have super thick hair medium length. My stylist has been trying to get me to do an undercut. I live in the southwest desert and thick long hair is so hot in the summer. I finally did it and it has changed my life. I can pull my hair up on the crown and nobody ever sees the undercut. I used to have to wear it up in a pony or clip which doesn't work that great with thick hair. That's the tip. Literally half my head is shaved, no one can see it, and I still have a ton of hair. Best of all, it's cool to wear and no more triangle head.

I started doing it 5 years ago and think it was the best decision. it gives some movement and volume. also, by experimenting a bit with the length I discovered that at my current age I prefer having my hair 5-10cm shorter than I used to have earlier. it is still long hair but makes me feel younger and more stylish.

I use products marketed to women of color and wash my hair 1-2 times a week ,with coloring limited to semi - permanent on occasion and am using temporary color rest of the time. Air dry most of the time. Love everything about your videos. Thanks for posting.

Very helpful. So happy I found your channel. 50 is knocking at my door and I always had long, thin, stringy, blonde hair. I now live in Florida and it gets frizzy so easy now. My biggest secret has been finding a new hair stylist that understands my hair and I absolutely trust her. I now have that medium shaggy, textured kinda bob cut that I only wash once a week and I get so many compliments. I was actually told by another female at the store that I'm sexy!!!!! I have a 23 year old daughter and people think she's my little sister!!! I can't wait to use some of your tricks and tips to help me maintain my hair between seeing my stylist. Thank you from an almost fabulous fifty!!

I’ve let my hair grow very long and I’m 72. When I wore it a little longer I would blow it straight. I have bangs that I think soften my face. I keep it colored an Auburn color that lets me continue wearing jewel colors. Since I have grown it very long I curl it or do a Mermaid curl every other week. I wash my hair about every 4-5 days and find that my hair feels more healthy than when I use to wash it every other day. I liked listening to your video. It was good hearing someone talk about long hair on mature women.

I just stumbled on his channel today and find his info incredibly helpful. The one thing that sticks out in his videos so far, is the need to justify his advice……..Based on a lot of the comments below, I can totally understand why. Seriously, I’m grateful as a 48 year old woman that someone is even addressing aging hair. The last thing I’m going to do is blast his opinion or the content. I’ll take the nuggets of advice that apply to me and be happy. I’ll never understand the people that nitpick every video. It’s quite sad, really. @justin hickox, keep up the great advice and videos. I had long hair for many years. I finally decided to cut it off. It was starting to look straggly, at least to me. I went with an asymmetrical bob with a stacked back. My hair now feels fuller and even looks like there is more than when it was long. I have always had baby fine hair and felt better with it short to mid length. It is now just above the collar in the back with side down almost to my chin. I think this look does make me look years younger. Hair styles do depend on your hair and how it behaves, curly or straight. Not everyone can wear long hair nor short hair. I find just inbetween looks good on me but I still love the shag and pixie cuts. Plan to try one of those next. You just have to try different styles and have fun with them. I always say if it doesnt turn out to your liking you can always grow it back

I have hair down to the middle of my rear that is predominately straight, though after I went into peri-menopause, it did develope a slight wave. I shampoo & condition with Loma brand -only washing my roots while conditioning it all. I deep condition as needed. I wash every 2-3 days. I do color my hair (roots only) because at 51, if feel the lack of color washes me out. I was a natural auburn redhead so that is what I strive to keep to. However I do highlight around my face to behind my ears, as well as a few small strips at my part, only. This helps to blend my gray roots when they grow out in-between colorings as well as flows beautifully over the darker color underneath. When I have roots but not the time to color, I make my own root powder with cornstarch, essential oils and some bronzer mineral powder. This serves as both a root touch-up as well as a dry shampoo. Keeping the ends trimmed and neat is imperative to a classy, tailored look. I usually go get a trim twice a year. Once a year I go thru every strand and trim with iced scissors for any split ends as well, as bottom trims miss the higher broken strands. When I am wanting a more polished & elegant look, I give myself a blow-out or use the flat iron to smooth my hair. It gives it a very nice additional sheen to my already straight hair. I never lean back on or sleep on my hair, always moving it to the side when I sit or above my pillow when I sleep as ruff fabrics are hard on the individual stands. In the winter, I tuck it inside my coat; summertime I usually have it up in a messy bun or ponytail anyway, as it's so hot & heavy it's unbearable to me. I do use a natural bristle brush to distribute the oils and a natural bone comb to stimulate my scalp, as well. And I never brush or comb my hair wet. Usually wash my hair before bed and sleep with it wet as it takes hours to dry, this way I can avoid applying heat to it but only rarely. Thank you for this helpful video. I am.lookingnforward to watching the others you have.

I'm so glad I stumbled across your video when looking for tips on correcting layered hair. I liked my hair long (as I love pulling up), but as I've gotten older - and gained some weight - I noticed layering my hair to give shape and movement was more flattering on me. Otherwise, the long, uniform length would pull down my face (accentuating what gravity was already doing to my face) and making me look tired. The layers made me appear fresh & alert and gave me a more youthful appearance. There is definitly an ideal flattering length on me that I won't go past.

I found after washing and letting my hair dry for a while, I use large Velcro rollers. When I first taken them out, my hair is a little too puffy, but it settles down and actually looks fantastic several hours later or the next day. I can put a pony tail in with fabric scrunching to quicken this process. Something about the Velcro rollers smooths all the frizzies in my salt n pepper hair. No heat needed which is a plus. Thank you.

I only started letting my hair grow long and uncolored during the pandemic. I'm 63. I'd been wearing the above-the-shoulder length for 30 years. I haven't had hair this long since the 70s. Anyway, one day in July 2021 I was having a bad day all around. On impulse I called a random salon and made an appointment for just a cut. It was nice to have a stylist listen to me and then give me supportive feedback and suggestions. Anyway, I started following your videos and I've been thrilled that my new stylist has been saying and doing the same things! I'm learning to find my beauty (it's in there somewhere) and I find much of that comes from my own confidence. So, now that I've got a good cut that I like for a change, I'm considering a suggestion from my stylist that involves "brushing" in highlights that will make my gray/white strands "pop" (your words). My old color is nearly gone at the ends and I'm getting a little drab. Not that I want the color again. My husband loves the way it's looking now and more importantly, so do I. Did I have a question here? Oh, yes, can you show videos of brushing? Is it like highlighting? It happens to be an Aveda Salon (I'm vegan) but I'm not sure that makes too much difference. I'm trying this now (February 2022) be ause I want my hair to look nice for my nephew's wedding this April and I figure this gives me time to play around with my hair.

I really agree with everything in this video. There are some really good tips and advise. I do have a question, though and I'll kind of explain before I ask it. 18 months ago I stopped coloring my grey hair. (I've been almost 80% grey since my early 30's.) The thing is, my hair grows insanely fast and I'd have a week of coloring that looked good and then after that this distinct line of demarcation between the dark dyed hair and my incoming grey/silver. It was a battle I was never going to win, so I have finally embraced it. When I first decided to stop coloring, I had my hairdresser lighten my hair and actually add in grey highlights. This really helped it look so much better while I transitioned over to all natural color. What a journey! Anyway, I just share this story so you will understand my questions and comments better. After this was all said and done, I realize that my hair really isn't grey at all, but instead a striking shade of white and silver with a bit of dark lingering underneath. It's a beautiful combination and I wish I had changed over to it years ago. However, I find that when I use any kind of heat styling tool, it causes a yellowing to the hair; Even on the lowest heat settings. Now, I don't have to use heat tools, and I don't most of the time, but I work in an office setting and there are times I just want to look my best, like for presentations, meeting new clients, etc. I find that the heat tools just provide me with a smoother, silkier look to my hair, but the trade-off is the yellow tinge that results, even with the use of a heat protective spray. . I can combat the yellow with a silver shampoo and/or leave-in toner treatments, but there is such a fine edge to leaving it on the hair long enough to get rid of the yellow, but not too long that I end up with a lavender hue that I don't like. Is there something that I can use to just prevent the yellowing in the first place?
@beverlyb7863
@beverlyb7863 2 года назад
Could it be that its actually the products you are using (perhaps even the heat protectant) that is actually turning yellow and not your hair itself? Its also possible that minerals in your water that are deposited on your hair are interacting with the heat. I would try clarifying your hair very well, then do a test patch with no product and see what happens.

At 56 and having nightmare frizzy/curly hair my entire life, and having hairstylists wanting to do 1 thing: straighten, I’ve finally come to accept the frizz and be proud of my wild, natural style. Strangely, I get compliments frequently, because even though it’s frizzy, despite having used almost every product available, the layered cut keeps it full and looking like I have more hair than I do. I keep it well conditioned and focus on dimensional color. I think “frizzy” is actually a texture that people have been made to feel bad about.

Hi Justin, I’m so happy I found your channel! All my life I’ve straighten or blow dry my hair to eliminate my curls. But last year right before the lockdown (CA) I’ve decided to let it be natural. I have 3B &3A (Italian/Greek/Mexican), medium thickness & tons of it. Due to pandemic my hair is too long one length, which I hate because it’s very heavy. Would like to cut it to shoulder length with layers, that’s my go to but in the past I never allowed my curls to show. I’ve finally for the first time love my spiral curls💕 but don’t know if layers would work. Can you please do a video for curly gals, options? Please. Thank you. Stay Safe & Well!

Excellent information Justin! I’ve spent the last couple years growing my hair from a pixie cut to now collar bone length. I feel more feminine with the longer length and now just thinking about getting some layers to add dimension.

Hey Nancy, layers would be a HUGE gain in movement. I think you’d love them!

I’m 68 . My hair has always been chôme coloured dark brown . Last year I decided to have a balayage and then gradually became blonder with contrasting darker roots . It’s long , it’s straightened with bangs and I love it. You are absolutely right . It was if you were talking about me lol
