Phil's voice was absolutely amazing and one hell of a bass player. Thin Lizzy was so underrated the original line up was just unbelievable thank you for your contribution to Rock & Roll.
@@grrwuff4099 I always speak up for younger people and their new music, but I was in high school in the 80s, and that was a sad, difficult time for me too. I never though rock would die. It hasn't died, but it's gone from mainstream music for sure. A Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Howard Jones, nothing wrong with that music, but for a rocker, it was death. Grunge and metal lived on, but they were very narrow genres. My favorite music was gone from the charts, but that meant I had to create my own music. As musicians, it's ok, as long as we don't expect the pop world to like us.
I'm really tired of people writing this crap. There are lots of musicians out there NOW busting their asses without auto tune or backing tracks, me being one of them. Stop insulting and start supporting...
Phil was such a great performer with a tremendous voice. you see it especially in the front slow part of the Cowboy Song, he was really extraordinary. RIP phil
You know what?! As good as they were compared to others, they were not pushed and supported by the media like some who were after almost nothing, and the media kept them in the center for years.
@@beenaplumber8379I respectfully disagree. For example, if you mention, Dancing In The Moonlight, this band should immediately come to a serious music listener’s mind, but it’s not. They instead think of think of King Harvest’s version of a song with the same name but it’s a totally different(literally speaking) and inferior song. 99 out of 100 people stopped on the streets of hipsterville between 40 and 70 would not say “Tin Lizzie” if you asked who sang it. I think the reason that Thin Lizzy’s music is under appreciated is they simply lack an iconic catalog. The Stones have a million b-sides that never get heard on the radio and those songs are top tier songs and the reason they get the accolades. People would buy the album and surprise it has ten great songs on it (see Exile in Main Street). And that’s what separates them from TT. Led Zeppelin has a huge catalog, the Beatles, Grateful Dead, Doors, The Clash, and so on. That’s the difference I believe. Then again, I may not have any idea wtf I’m talking about. 😮
@@iantollefsen343 When I think of Dancing in the Moonlight I think of Grace Vanderwaal. A lot of time has passed, and we move on. That doesn't mean the bands whose deep cuts now elude us went underappreciated. I doubt I would recognize the names of more than 2 songs on any given Stones album either. Everybody knows The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak, many know Whisky in a Jar and Cowboy Song, and others. Thin Lizzy were giants, and people loved them! People knew who they were, and people now at least know they were a major, highly successful rock act back in the day. Do they remember Argent? Golden Earring? Focus? We get old, we forget things, but when we hear the music, we still remember it, and it makes us feel good. Thin Lizzy got the greatest recognition: Packed arenas, high record sales, and heavy airplay on both pop and rock radio. That doesn't happen when a band is underrated. It only happens when they have achieved massive success. In YT comments, people don't mean underrated when they use that word. It either means "I only just learned of them" or "I like them so everyone else should too, or else they're stupid." Often it means "Music was objectively better when I was a teenager," whenever that was. (We weren't all teenagers at the same time, so that can't be objectively true.) It's all usually self-centered commentary, not a true statement that some artist actually did not receive the recognition they deserved. Thin Lizzy was not as big as the Rolling Stones. Go figure. I like them more than I like the Stones, but that's subjective taste. It doesn't mean either deserved more or less credit than they got. It's my taste, which is a much more honest thing to say than they were underrated. I remember the 70s, and I know they weren't. They fell off the charts, quit making music, and Phil died. The critics have moved on.
Yes. Indeed. And also prisoners of their own choices during that era. Much like Hendrix and others. Drugs, booze..in excess, plus the wear of touring and the road. If not, consider.. McCartney toured and probably wasn’t pure. But he’s still going. Why? Just saying 🙂✌️ I don’t know. What’s the difference? Do you know? Regardless, RIP Phil. You rocked!
Phil was a cool dude, and the rest of the band was pretty damn good too. Knowing how Phil went out is truly heartbreaking, I haven't known anyone who shared his addiction, but I know most go out the same way. Gone WAY too soon, RIP Phil 🙏❤
He was the definition of cool in my junior high school. Thin Lizzy was one band that everyone could agree on in the late 70s. Just put Jailbreak on the turntable and keep flipping it till everyone's passed out.
Goddamn, they were so unbelievably good. I love how Phil let's the guitars shine, by stepping back and just being a bass player for a minute. What a badass he was.
And just think what a shame it is that this band is not in the Rock and roll hall of fame They should change their name to rock and roll hall of shame For ignoring this ban for so many years Unbelievable
There will never be another like Phil, or Thin Lizzy for that matter. Oh there is music now, some good some bad, but Originals, Legends are few and far between. (Put some respect on Phil's name)
Phil Lynott is the only black Irishman I've ever heard of; the world became bereft of his prowess way too soon. (Jan. of 1986) I was in 9th grade, I recall thinking a dynamic frontman is gone too damn young.
That "hall" in Cleveland is a joke and everybody knows it. All those rappers and no Thin Lizzy? Ridiculous. Did Deep Purple finally get in? Not for sure.
Love the album, must be said though, was heavily overdubbed and touched up by Visconti, so not a true live recording. Other than that, sounds near studio quality and it sold well.
I was lucky enough to meet them. A friend of mine used to jam with Thin Lizzy here in Tulsa. And back before Phil passed away they came to Tulsa to see Kenny and we all went to the bar. They just didn't want me to tell everyone who they where they just wanted to party and have a good time. So that's exactly what we did. There a awesome bunch of guy. Wish I could see them all again. Fly high Phil see you on the other side brother. Trooper
I have been listening since 1972 until today. I'll never get over it. Phil was special. The whole group is the best thing I can listen to. I have been listening to an incredibly wide range of all kinds of music for almost 60 years, but TL...
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW????From one deaf(ex Tommy) Scouser to another lol-Reside in US for the last twenty years plus-Miss home and our sense of humor more as time goes on -LIZZY RULES Timothy
What a great singer, lyricist, songwriter and performer Phil Lynott was and a fantastic band. Saw their blistering performance in 1980 at City Hall, Newcastle. 2 Gibson Les Paul’s through Marshall amps. No better sound. Orgasmic.
seen them back in the day in the kings hall in Belfast and the Antrim forum in the dark days of the troubles one of the few acts brave enough to play in Northern Ireland simply brilliant
kregory klements It appears you are lost living under a rock in a small PillBilly town which is very unfortunate. If you have questions Mr. Giggles try using google & enlighten yourself.
As much as I loved this band I still didn’t appreciate just how good they were until I was around 50yrs old. He had a unique and instantly recognisable voice. He/they were bloody awesome! One of his most brilliant performances was on Jeff Wayne’s musical version of War Of The Worlds. That was an awesome performance.
Best concert I ever went to, most fun and best live sound. They could really get a crowd going, like no other. NYC The Palladium, Oct 22,1977 with Graham Parker and the Rumor.
I saw them the next year, 78, on a 3 band bill with Blue Oyster Cult headlining at the Palladium. The Dictators were also supposed to play but their equipment, along with Blue Oyster Cult's, never arrived at the venue. Blue Oyster Cult played with some of Lizzy's backline equipment. I am pretty sure the next 2 nights were cancelled as I have seen all these shows listed in Lizzy concert dates as cancelled. But I can assure you, that Friday showed happened and Thin Lizzy was great!
I saw them in 74 tour with Gary Moore and Scott Gorham. It was $5 general admission for 5 bands. Thin Lizzy was the headliner. At the old Michigan Palace in Detroit.
Lizzy were one of the the best bands back in the 70’. Whiskey in the jar was one of the reasons I learned to play the guitar. Happy memories.👍👍👍🇬🇧🏴
When the lights go down when he starts singing, and and all you see is the bright, glowing whites of his eyes under that mass of hair, coolest shit ever
Wow wow wow. Somewhere in my past I ran across these guys - but never before did I enjoy them as they deserved and as I do now. Where’s the hall of fame? Geez these guys should be put on a pedestal for all to enjoy!
This is my favorite Thin Lizzy song . I recall a friend bringing the vinyl album over and a bag of weed when I was a teen . When this song played , I fell in love with it and had to go buy it , and I still have it ! It is strange that I can recall the exact moment when I heard certain music for the first time , like Robin Trower , etc . , most of the times it was smoking weed (weak stuff in those days ) .
@@frankpohl8746 lol, I just remembered them calling it homegrown as far as the cheap weak stuff . They called the better stuff Columbian , and later we were getting Red Haired Sess , as they called it . I actually stopped smoking weed way back in the early 90's when I smoked some tainted stuff my older bro brought over . I was really messed up from it , whatever it was laced with made me forget things . I literally would be driving somewhere and all of the sudden wake up out of a trance like deal . I did not remember getting out of bed , getting in the car , or driving to where I was ? did I run red stoplights ? I did not recall anything from that morning . That went on for several days , I asked my Bro what the hell was in it , and he said nothing , and he always goes through that ! I had smoked weed for may years and never went through anything like that . I was done , and never touched it again . Now that it's legal in Michigan , I may grow some of my own to be sure it's not messed with .
I saw Lizzy and Slade together. lt doesn't get better. Oh, and Alex Harvey and Slade. And Quo and Slade! Need l say more? 70,s rock is without peer and what any band with balls would aspire to.
They walked on stage at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in like 1979, said "we're Thin Lizzy and we're here to kick your ass" or some such and did just that. was on the front row.
I went and see them back in 1978 they were backing up Queen and I seen Queen 6 times I could not choose which band was better after seeing them one time most underrated band I've ever seen the Providence Civic center in Rhode Island was rockin so loud for this band what a concert packed God rest his soul
One of my most memorable gigs was Lizzy in Dalymount in 1975 or 1976...was about three rows back in an absolute surge...but I lasted...me and Maxer...RIP Phillo
I’m gonna say his drumming is off the fucking hook. Listen to what he does and some of the lesser known songs like Chinatown just do yourself a favor and listen to the drumming On that song
Stunning so clear and great sound Band at its best Phil Brian Scott and the most under rated guitarist never got credits he deserved Snowy .what a band
Smoked hash oil most that day & night but won't forget it. Heard my cousins car fly down the road, then a few minutes later out of the blue he knocked on my moms door. Invited me to go with him to see these guys at Center Stage in East Providence R.I. Had an extra ticket and knew I liked their music. I asked him when was it. Said look outside. Dons 70 Nova SS and his Chevelle SS there sitting there all packed with guys yelling come on let's go, it's now or never.
God how lucky was I to see these guys..saw them around 6 times with phil lynott..once seen never forgotten..this footage is tremendous thanks for posting...memories to last a lifetime..👍👍
I Love this song, it just gives you a good feeling. These guys were extremely talented. It makes you feel free, even justvfor that moment. Rip Paul and Gary. Peace
Already a statue of him in Dublin , i saw them play a small venue near me in 1980 Kirkcaldy in Fife Scotland ...I was thirteen years old and my life was changed forever that day ...a true rock star who never got the credit he deserved....
@@revwahfair I have a Phopto Album full of ticket stubs. Like Black Sabbath for $3.50 The Stones were the only band that charged $10 . Those were the best days. We could go to the Shows for $8. That included the ticket and drinks and a bus ride.
@@kurtsherrick2066 I got 1st row balcony for the Stones and a separate concert Lou Reed with 100 tv sets on white and black static. I remember what drugs I took. I wrote them on the stub. Both concerts I had Lilly F40 Reds. Wish they still made those. Valium is the only thing close.lol
@@revwahfair That is funny you meantioned the Reds. I had a friend I could see sitting a few rows over from me during the Todd Rundgren RA Tour he was he was on the front row of the Balcony and he slept on the front top of the Balcony. I think it was Secobarbital if I remember correctly. That is what I tell the younger people. We had real drugs back then. Glad we survived!! Iam sure you are like me and know so many that didn't make it through those years.
@@revwahfair By the way I lived in Memphis. I was actually at the first concert Mick Jaggar plsyed Guitar on Stage. Mick is a huge fan of Furry Lewis a real Delta Blues Artist. The Stones brought Furry a new Guitar. Mick said he wanted Furry to see him play on stage the first time. It was the Some Girls Tour in 78. We had a go through Hunfreds of Feminist to get into the Colosseum. They were protesting the Album Cover. It was a experience.
Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham on dueling guitars is amazing.. An Irish rock and roll band that truly ended 35 years ago when we lost Phil. January 4, 1986..
You are correct.. It's Snowy White. He was a second/back up guitarist on Pink Floyd's Animals Tour in 77. Gorham saw him play and asked him to join TL..
I loved Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, They were the greatest rocking band of all time, my 6 brothers and I were very lucky to get to see them play all during their touring and recording times. I still miss Phil and I always will
I really would have loved to have seen thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott. I was just a couple of years too young, and then he was gone.., but never forgotten. 🤘✌️
1982 Germany, Nuremburg, Monsters of Rock, still got the pic of him in the album, It was close to one of his last concerts, so many bands at 20 bucks total, open air concert and the sound mix was good too. Rest peacefully Phil, you were exceptional as you blazed by us...
Many of us couldn't have been at concerts back then (in Germany, as Germans), but damn we had the best live concerts in the 80s in our country (Lorely and Essener Gruga-Halle), via TV. I was at everxy TV Concert at the" Rote Punkt" in Freiburg, South Germany. Mani!, you made it happen!! Zottel and all the Gang! Best times ever! Wir bleiben ewiglich vebunden....
