Continuing on with our discussion of tom res heads, this week we’re discussing the benefits of going with thin (less than 10mil thick) res heads for greater tonal response and at lower dynamics and immediacy of tone across the dynamic range.
Note: 7mil = 0.007in (1mil is not the same as 1mm)
Toms: Pearl Masters Custom Extra Maple 8x12” & 16x16"
Batter Head: Evans G2 Coated tinyurl.com/Ev...

Pay attention to what he says and he's offering great advice. I've been playing since '65, and I've tried almost every combo there is and he's spot on. Double ply heads on the bottom do not project well and should be only used if you are miced.

Always great topics covered here! It interested me to see someone else testing this as well. I tested with 7, 10, 12 and 14 mil reso heads. Even though I liked the response/immediacy of the 7 mil, single ply heads I preferred the added depth of the 12 and 14 mil, single ply heads. All have their place though depending on your application.

Thanx for this awesome video. About a year ago I found a configuration I really liked with G2 coated on top with a small bit of muffling and coated reso 7s on the bottoms. This has been my favorite sound for my kit and now I have a better understanding of how the heads contributed to that sound and what about the sound I really liked.

Excellent demonstration of the subtle and not so subtle differences in tone. When I had a large kit 30 years ago, I used to use thinner coated reso heads on my 8" and 10" rack toms so they wouldn't choke (not sure how much tone i kept but I was inspired by Neil Peart and Gil Moore {who used 7 Mils on batter and reso for recording at the time). These days, I've considered a thinner coated reso for toms on my first kit,, a Mid 60s Ludwig kit (14x20", 14x14", 8x12" with my 5x14" jazz festival snare).

I’ve spent a lot of time and money “experimenting” with G1 and G2 clear and coated batter heads and Genera Resonant, G1 clear and coated and Reso 7 resonant heads. For the longest time I was settled on G2 coated batters with Genera Resonant reso heads. Not being totally satisfied with the tone, I went back and forth and round and round with all of the heads listed above. I finally settled on G2 batter for the “warmth and durability”, but am still going between the Genera Resonants and Reso 7s. Current I have G2 on the batter and Reso 7s on the reso for playing at home and church, but for when I play out with the band, I’ll change the Reso 7s out for the Genera Resonant…I think. I’ve become very proficient at changing and tuning drumheads 😂

Over the years I've run my Ludwig Epics 13x9 rack and 16x16 floor with G2 coated over G1 coated, Ec2 clear over G1 coated and Ec2 over G1 clear all sounded great , last nite I switched the resos to the thinner Evans Resonant with G2 coated on top and Oh freakin yeah !!! took the drums to another level !!! Reso heads are so important as you say and so often overlooked , keep up the good work dude your vids are spot on and I'm digging your playing by the way I watch your vids as much to see wot grooves I can lift from your playing as well as the info side , Peace and Respect to ya bro 👍

Man! These past few episodes have been mind blowing for me! I've always just used thin clear reso heads with coated G2s on top as I mainly record rockish stuff (usually I'm the engineer and not the actual drummer). But I am absolutely floored at how good those G1s sound as resos! Especially tuned in unison with the tops, which I have favored for a bit now. It definitely gets the Phil Selway Optomistic tom sound I absolutely adore! Great work!

Super helpful and informative! I've been playing for 25 years. I'm a decent player and very versed in tuning and maintenance as I should be by this point. I purchased a new set of Tama Starclassic performer Maple Birch last year. I've never had a maple kit before so I'm trying to figure out what's going to suit it best for my style and sound. I typically play rock or metal. I've definitely been an EC2/G1 clear kinda guy for a decade or so. I think the only other major factor that I'm having difficulty with is that I ordered hyperdrive size toms. They're very shallow depth. The reason I found your video is because I was looking into thinner 7-7.5 mil reso heads to help the drums open up and project. 8x6, 10x7, 12x8, 13x9 rack toms. I think I might give the resonant black glass or coated reso 7's a shot. Either way, thanks for the great video. You were very detailed and you broke it all down in a very easy to understand manner. I appreciate you sir.

Well this is usch a complicated topic! First of thank you for actually exploring this, its often overlooked. I think you missed a point here though... Let me try to explain: Since the mass of the reso would be higher with a thicker head, it would need more tension to get to the same pitch. A good analogy would be a bass string when tuned to a guitar range, it would also reqier alot more tension. With this tension, the sustain gets longer, which than changes the sound so much allready. So one aspect of the difference is like you mentioned, the longer sustain and slower response of the reso head. I think the real difference is that you can actually tune a thicker head lower, while retaining a playable tension. Again, just like a guitar string. And that for me changes the sound much more than the difference in sustain, that you get when tuning to the same pitch.

Man, I've really enjoyed your videos. First off, the snare sounds great with that configuration! 2nd, wanted to thank you for getting me more in tune with my tunings. I've been tuning so much since I started watching your vids, I can almost get my "usual" configuration in tune, just by feel. I've picked up several Bubinga kits the past few months, due to CITES, and tuning a brand new kit with perfect edges, has become super simple. W/Bubinga, I'll actually keep my reso a bit looser than my batter, as they can get out of control. Thanks again!

My favorite tom sound ever was Aquarian Studio X batters and High Frequency (7 mil) Video Gloss Black resonant side. I had them on a PDP CX from the early 2000's. It's a 6 ply maple and that combo gave them a birch like attack. Remo is what I use though... I may try Remo Diplomats again, but I'm really tempted to go back to that Aquarian combination.

Great video. I used the Reso 7s for a few months, but there was someone about the overtones, particularly on my vintage toms with round-over edges that didn't sit right. After hearing your comparison and explanation, it may be that the bottom head resonating so immediately was the issue. I've since gone back to coated Ambassadors which just seem to be right for me.

I’m using Evans Calftone tom batters as reso heads. Works great! 7 mil but I guess the coating adds some more mass than the regular white coating. Anyway, to me a happy medium between response for jazz and the rounder tone I like with thicker reso heads. Try it out!
@Medievalfan94
@Medievalfan94 2 года назад
Okay, from what I can hear: thinner head on the reso means more attack, a more warm and full sound, but significantly less sustain. I just looked into this matter because I want some resos for my meshkit, and I thought about thinner heads because, hey, the get moving quicker and bring out alot of tone in the lower dynamics. Maybe I found my match here... Remo Diplomats vs. G7?
@DeanMk1
@DeanMk1 5 лет назад
One point I didn't see addressed is that using a thin weight head on the resonant side of a drum can also give it a "bigger" sound. This is a nice fringe benefit when you have a drum that tends to have "focused" type of sound and you're looking for something with more of an "open" or "airy" quality while keeping the drum from sounding overly ringy. This "largeness" of sound is something that can easily picked up if you're playing the kit or standing near it. Unfortunately, you can't hear that aspect in a video.
@tim3308

Great channel! The headline got buried here somewhat: In seconds listening to this, I thought, "the toms sound really good" - then the ahh - you properly tune both heads to the same pitch. All tuning jacking around, I always come back to the even, satisfying (and better volume!) rich tone/sound of heads in phase w/ each other - batter and reso at same pitch. To further step on the gas w/ this use same thickness of head on batter and reso .... do a vid on "graduated" heads: 10 mil over 10 mil on the 10", 12 mil over 12 mil on the 12", and 14 mil over 14 mil on 14" & 16" (pssst, tune both heads to same pitch for the best sound, again ;) )

@jonneville2287
@jonneville2287 4 года назад
Many drummers believe that a thin reso will increase sustain, because it is more sensitive, but the opposite is true. A thin reso will be more sensitive to the vibrations from the batter, so will begin resonating sooner, making it more responsive, but the sustain will be shorter due to less mass = less inertia. When I was playing rock music, I used a thin 7 mil clear head as a FT reso to control the sustain, and some overtones, and it worked well. Now I play jazz, I use thin resos on all toms, but the warmer, coated version.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 4 года назад
Yep, there’s a lot of misunderstanding with the physics involved. While a thinner reso decreases sustain, it also increases dynamic range as it requires less force to set it in motion.

How much was the overall sustain reduced with the 7 mil head? With less mass is should have been reduced but it seemed negligible in the recording
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
Hey there! I'd have to say that the actual sustain itself isn't dramatically different between them, it's much more of a tone and round-ness in the note that changes. The growth/bloom of the note is longer because of how much more the thinner head can flex, but then it dies down smoothly. Hope that helps! -Cody

A bit thinner- 7mil instead of 7.5mil. This really only matters when we’re talking mass though because the films used for those two heads are generally very different.

The reso 7’s seem to have less sustain than the G1’s

Yeah the tone and behavior are different but to my ear it's less of an overall sustain difference and more about which components of the sound sustain. The physical feel of the drum is surprisingly different too. - Cody

Given the same tension and force applied when playing and they should have a bit less sustain, as there’s less mass present. The tone is more present upfront because it takes less force to set the reso head in motion, but once it’s in motion there isn’t as much mass to stay in motion. -Ben

I think I'd prefer the 7's for a hybrid with Gospel

Because this wasn’t a comparison video and that’s a whole different type of series we hope to produce at some point.

Thinner resos had more "wow" (overtones) -something I am trying to avoid.

Yeah, for optimum response I usually end up tuning them differently than I would something thicker. Every gauge has its own idiosyncrasies :) -Cody

Hey Ben and Cody, I was wondering how these thinner heads affect the volume and projection of the toms? I’m considering trying the Reso 7 and the genera Reso heads for my toms. I love the tone of them from the video, but I’m wondering if there’s any drawbacks for a live setting, such as noticeably less volume and projection. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
Good question! I feel personally like these thinner reso’s throw more tone in a live situation which can give the impression of a slight loss in attack but ultimately they seem to make a bit of a bigger sound to my ear for sure. The specific tuning scheme really has a lot to do with it to but overall I really like them for both loud and quiet situations. -Cody

Sounds Like A Drum thanks Cody! I definitely going to try the thinner Reso heads! I’m interested in both the Reso 7 and genera Reso for different applications!
