Welcome back everyone! Aviation is definitely changing from my perspective over the last 30 or 40 years.
This is an intro of what I plan to start focusing on in some of my upcoming videos: how do we continue on with our dream/reality of owning an airplane?
As I move forward on this journey of exploration, it would be great to hear from all of you. I look forward to hearing about your ideas and suggestions on this topic. Please share my channel with anyone that you think could benefit. Thanks to all.
Blue (affordable) skies,
-Tony

As someone who just left A/C ownership, I can relate. If you want someone to interview, let me know!

AFTER the ban on smoking in airplanes people removed the cigarette lighters in their air-planes. When GPS Apps and cell phones became useful in airplanes. People wanted the cigarette lighter ports reinstalled back into their Air-planes. A popular aircraft supply retailer listed $28.99 (USD). A few weeks later I was In N.A.P.A. A popular auto parts retailer. I changed the name to (national air-craft parts Association). The same part, same box, same barcode except there was an (a.) in front of the part number online. The auto cigarette lighter didn't have the (a). Auto parts are 75% cheaper than air-craft parts. I started noticing there is a number of auto parts that are cross over to aircraft.

@kenstreet1769 perfect example. Truth is, that popular airplane parts supplier doesn’t only sell airplane stuff. I’ve built a few planes over the years and the running gag was, “I went to Canadian Tire (retail store in Canada) in the aviation parts department”. No different than online airplane parts suppliers. Same exact part.

Good video. Generally correct. We haven’t seen the correction yet. It’s coming. In the meantime, if someone wants to offer 180 for my Kitfox you’re welcome to it!

Great video, I totally believe in shared ownership It is the best way to be able to afford and own an aircraft. I also think it is great have a group chat with them and then you can post all your photos in the group and create friendships that will last forever.

Buying a plane today is imo worse than get-there-itis. I've been watching airplane prices for the better part of 10 years now and before the vid you could buy a very nice plane with low TBO that would last you or your family for many years for $20,-50,000. Anything above $50,000 would land you a beauty built in the 1980's. You could even find great deals around $50,000 for a multi-engine that would last you years if you wanted to fork out the extra cost for maintenance and annual inspections. Today, you would be lucky to find that same plane for less than $200,000 built in the 1950's or 60's and most are at or near TBO. Looking at airplanes near me in California. A 1950 Beechcraft 35 is running at $90,000. Which to me, is insane as this plane would cost about $35,-40,000 pre-vid. That's a 73 year old aircraft that some are way past what I would buy for the TT they have on the airframe. I'm hearing stories or people buying these kind of planes, and their first annual is costing them upwards of $20-30,000 on top of these already over-priced airplanes. My advice, do not buy a plane right now. If you have the money, put it in an interest accruing account and don't even look at it. Everything is overpriced. Homes, cars, supplies, airplanes, goods & services. It's insane. Once that bubble bursts though you'll see those $100,000 planes back down to $40,000 again. I bought a brand new Dodge Challenger in 2020 for $24,000 before prices started sky rocketing. Today I can trade it in for $29,000 which is crazy. I can guarantee you anyone who buys a house or a car or a plane today will find themselves upside down on their value in the next 24-48 months. DON'T DO IT! In California, legislation, in conjunctions with banks, are trying to pass a law that if you buy a house today for let's say $500,000 and the market crashes and home values drop and your house is now worth $250,000, the bank can come after you for the other $250,000 to be paid in full and if you can't pay it, they can legally EVICT you from your house and then turn around and re-sell your house for the current value of the home. Now it's said that this legislation is being shot down but that just goes to show you how freaking crazy everything is getting.

@kevin1873 excellent input!! I actually have been struggling with the fact that if I sell my Lancair and buy another plane (at the current high prices), I will lose big time when that market crashes and it’s time for me to sell that newly purchased plane because I decide to leave aviation. My bigger fear. Once I sell my plane I will get accustomed to the abundance of free dollars and “the simplicity of life” due to not having to worry about things like maintenance etc. And simply not buy another plane ever (like has happened to many of my friends). Thanks again for writing!!

Nice vid, good food for thought. I'm also Canadian and believe you are on track with your analysis on the impact of aircraft pricing. My concerns about the future of GA in Canada and possibly further abroad relate to carbon pricing (especially in Canada) and since AV is a niche market the availability of fuel. Hate the thought of owning a quarter million dollar aircraft that can't be flown or is too expensive to operate and maintain. Shop rates, hangar fees and insurance to name some of the issues have all gone mental.

@johnmackenzie5136 well now you brought up the worst concept in Canada. Carbon tax. Lol. I’m depressed. As for maintenance, I think that shopping around is possible here. There are some shops that price reasonably. The issue is getting everyone to go to that lower priced AME causing high priced AME to lower prices due to folks dropping his services to go to other guy. Quite the task!

Shared ownership, or a private flying club is one way that is being advocated by the EAA. They lay it all out for you and you can find a sample members' agreement. You can't fly your plane all the time, so why not let someone else in on the fun? By sharing the fixed costs and maintenance, you can get your hourly flying rate down to fuel and oil changes, almost. Be picky about who gets in and clearly spell out how to get out. There are a few examples running up here north of the wall too so we can see how our laws apply. It's still expensive, but sometimes you have put up with that to keep out the riffraff.

@jimboagogo thanks for writing. I am actually working on the shared ownership idea for a video. I’ll bring the EAA perspective into the mix as well. Thanks!!

Mr. Mann? Love flying in the pacer. Maybe a possibility. I'll keep it in mind for future vids

Isn't it all "market driven" just like real estate with the difference that GA Certified and Amateur built tend to be valued based on the US market (not Canadian). Of course Canadians now have the added cost of a luxury tax. I'll keep watching with interest. Plane shared ownerships certainly do seem to be an increasingly attractive option.
@HUDPilot
@HUDPilot 9 месяцев назад
Yes market driven to some extent and I do hold to my point that if someone is willing to pay for it, then by all means, let it happen. Cost, though have risen since Covid. However ONLY because of banks and flooding of the dollar, to compensate for any financially related reason. At some point it all goes to hell. I have a buddy that I was chatting just last week who decided to sell his project and mentioned the three folks he knows are “getting out of aviation while they still can”. They believed that cutting their losses before things got out of hand was their best course of action. Time will tell. Meanwhile, I am gonna hunt for the thriftier/safe options and share what I can. Thanks for stopping by.
