Thank you! This is so helpful, I’m about to be a probationer in August and I still feel so all over the place. I have another placement at the end of Feb and I’m hoping to get a lot learning done. My placements have been impacted by COVID since my second year so I’ve missed a lot of placement/practice that would’ve really helped. My biggest question is how do teachers decide what to teach for the whole term or whole year? As a ST I’m used to a CT just telling me ‘next week could you teach writing?’ Like how and when do you know when to teach things/forward plan. Love the flexibility but also makes it so difficult for a first year teacher 🤣

This was a massive question that I wondered too. My experience so far has been that it really depends on your local authority and your school. In the council where I work, there is a basically a map of the areas to be covered over the course of the year e.g. for maths. Literacy can be a bit more vague sometimes but depending on your stage there will most likely be a phonics/spelling/grammar programme which the school use for you to work through. In my current school we actually have forward planners which basically plan literacy and maths topics for us so I just look at each week of term and what I’m supposed to cover that week which has made life so much easier! I’ve learned that some schools will have “topics” that each year group cover eg “Egyptians” or “Scottish Parliament” and might already have planners for this. Whereas in others it will be up to you to choose what to cover! Honestly try not to stress about it though. In my probation I didn’t have a lot of guidance for planning so I just did the best I could to cover relevant experiences and outcomes for my stage☺️ Hope this helps!
