In the previous episode, I started my trip-pedaling from Jasper, Alberta Canada to Roosville, Montana. In this episode, I head south along the Divide through the bulk of Montana, visiting Whitefish, Big Fork, Ovando, the Llama Ranch (famous Divide trail magic stop), Helena, Butte, Basin, Wise River and Bannack State Park. I climb Stemple Pass and descend the treacherous Fleecer Ridge. I stay with generous Warmshowers hosts, meet other bikepackers and even ride with a new friend for a while. And-as you'll see-we encounter a rather dark situation!
I want to thank everyone who watched the first video, clicked that thumbs up, left a comment and subscribed. It's been incredible hearing from you and is so gratifying to learn that people are connecting with this story. I so appreciate you!
Thanks to fellow Divide rider Carl Schoch for providing a few additional photos and video in this episode. It's nice to not always be the one behind the lens.
If you missed Episode 1, you can watch it here: • Just Pedal: A Woman, a...
I also did a pre-trip interview, answering questions a lot of people asked me about preparing to ride the Great Divide: • Frequently Asked Quest...

The scariest part is really just the sections that are very remote, and those are only scary because it feels more secure to be near food and water. You will thrive out there. Embrace it!

The word that defines my existence is "Responsibility"...I'm not complaining & I'm sure that I'm not alone. This series reminds me that there is a word that has fallen into disuse - "Enjoyment". Tour Divide videos tend to be about overcoming adversity, pushing yourself to the limit, achievement etc. and I can identify with these. This series shows that a different approach is possible. I suspect (pure guess) that the local people are more open during the majority of the year when the Tour Divide isn't steaming through!

I'm in awe watching this. I just got back from riding for 2 months on the TransAm route. I loved it but I was very curious about the GDMBR. It would have been so great to have ridden dirt roads instead of the pavement that I was on, to be away from cars for the most part. But the GDMBR looks so much more physically challenging that I don't know that I could do it. I'd definitely need a different bike and would need to be realistic about how far I could ride in a day (nowhere near as far as you and with a lot more rest days). But that's okay. Maybe I'll just go for a couple of weeks, rent a bike, and be totally flexible and forgiving of myself for how far I actually get. Thanks for the inspiration! It's clear how much work you put into these 2 videos so far. They're fantastic.
@katrinahase
@katrinahase 7 месяцев назад
Congrats on the TransAm route! Your comment made me think of the bikepackers I met in Big Fork. One was piecing together the route a section at a time. Another was riding 40 miles/day. I thought to myself, “those are really pleasant ways to ride the Divide”. Ride it the way you want to!

Fantastic trip Katrina. How did you deal with potential or real encounters with bears or other wildlife???
@katrinahase
@katrinahase 3 месяца назад
I ran a timber bell (passive ringing) on my bike, sang/talked loudly to myself, and carried bear spray. Probably most effective, though, was I didn’t ride at night. That seems to be when a lot of people have animal encounters.
@princepage632

Look, i am impressed with your ride. I ride a lot, but never done anything like the divide. Look, I am gonna do something that i never do. it's a no -no in my book, but i have to know. by looking at you, i assume your in your 40's. that's an awesome ride for a lady in her later years. heck it's a ride for anyone in there 40's. All you have to say is yes in the 40's ,and you dont have to give exact numer. either way i am very impressed with you and your ride. if i had to guess, you must really tack on the miles each month. either on an indoor trainer or outside. you have to have a heck of a milage base to do that ride. anyhow, i really like the video.
@katrinahase
@katrinahase Месяц назад
I did the ride to celebrate my 50th birthday. I used Trainer Road to train for the Divide, working out consistently 4-5 days a week for an hour to 1-1/2 hrs per session. Workouts included a lot of sweet spot, threshold and endurance training zones. I did some long weekend rides as well, but that was supplemental. I also did weights twice a week and yoga. When you’re in your 20s or 30s, you may think of the 40s and older as “the later years”, but when you reach my age, you will come to realize that you are in your prime. I no longer have parenting responsibilities, so I’m free to spend my time devoting myself to cycling and other passions. And I have the experience and economic security to be able to take long stretches of time away from work, so I can take on epic adventures. You may also be surprised to learn that a great number of people riding the Divide that I met were in their 60s and 70s. At any age, the Divide-and many adventures-are attainable through discipline, planning and passion.

@katrinahase
@katrinahase Месяц назад
Overall, the traffic is pretty light along most of the gravel roads. Most people are pretty considerate. Keep your eye out for oversized pickup trucks…white ones are often the worst behaved. I have had people offer water and even ice, but that’s pretty rare while riding. Most trail magic occurs in towns.

@katrinahase

Thanks for subscribing! My goal was 60 miles (96 km) per day. I averaged about 58. But there turns out to be factors that influence daily mileage, like the amount of elevation, convenient places to resupply/camp/stay, and balancing a hard effort the day before or expected effort the next day.

@@katrinahase that's awesome. yeah i been biking seriously for over 30 years. i been lifting weights for that long to. i am in good enough shape stamina wise and esp. strenth wise i could just jump on the bike and go. i would not need to train for that. my issue is money. and i have an apartment i have to look after. i could not be gone that long. i am retired on a fixed income.I guess i could put all my furniture in storage and give up my home and do the ride, but i am not willing to do that.
