I think Ella actually switched with Catherine when she was being killed to spare her the pain of her death. she stated and I quote" I can bare the sharpest stones so you don't feel their pain", but another's free will is his alone(referring to George's will to murder his wife and she unable to do anything to stop him) that was somewhat her gift to cath as she was gifted same by the woman before her.
Yes! The ring falling off her ring at the end of the scene hints at that too cause earlier Catherine said it was a bit tight when trying to take it off to give it back to the long haired kid
No, she... well she did....... 🤔 So Cole could get paid? That's the best I can come up with. Oh! To say "Daddy's friend" at the library.... which, again, led to nothing. I concede. ✌
yes! I was so confused when they talked about it like it was a thriller/horror because it was obviously not. It was a drama with few ghosts. I think it was bad marketing and editing on their part.
Agreed but I'd throw in 'mystery' too, although they use 'mystery' to make a shitty screenplay seem deeper than it really is, which is a poo-encrusted toilet bowl.
might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure as Catherine is getting murdered, the previous woman of the house occupied her body, so although Catherine was murdered anyway, I think the ghost protected her to the best of her ability, by taking away the pain of the murder. but the spirits were pretty useless, could have just idk dropped a light on George's head or something lol
The movie is about women victims of domestical violence, with a lot of religious ideas like good people/martyr will go in heaven and bad people in hell. But on earth men are always the winners even when they don't deserve it, they say it at the beginning of the movie. So it is frustrating to see her die, but it's pretty logical.
@@rosesullivan i mean we've seen them shut and lock doors before (like when cath was in the bathroom) so why couldn't they lock him out of the bedroom that cath was in?
@@bizziegrace sprits/guardian angels can’t change the fate of someone’s death, which is pretty disappointing but they protected her by when she was getting stabbed with the axe, the spirit went inside her catherine’s body so that the stabbing will hurt less, which is why catherine’s body wasn’t moving at all when she was getting murdered.
Dude I have bad ADD and I get really bad anxiety, so sometimes I can’t watch movies LOL, but that’s why I love watching these because I can still hear about the movie, and what happens in it. I just don’t have to try and sit through a whole movie without getting up 20 times or having a panic attack lol
The spiritual weaving isn't as off the wall as you think. Both in Greek and Norse mythology the life story and faith of every living being is represented by a thread woven by the three godesses of destiny prepresenting birth, life and death, the latter tasked with cutting the thread when it's your time to eh well, kick the bucket. And all those individual threads together makes up the fabric of the world/reality/ cosmos and is a direct link to the gods and the spritiual life. That's probably where the writers got it from
I came here to say exactly this. It's also a big part of Mesoamerican spirituality, and along with midwifery and medicine one of the gifts given to the first woman from the gods. She, in turn teacher her daughters who teach theirs and on and on connecting this generation to the very first. Added to the symbology you mentioned, the thread of life is also related to the umbilical cord, which is again related to the above (a link of both blood and knowledge going back forever). And even today we talk about "the fabric of space and time."
Also remember about how weaving is a "women's craft" that's doesn't get acknowledged as a valid form of arm. This was a big part of 70's feminist art movement. ✌🏻
I would also think that not buying a haunted house would also have something to do with it. Remember, the husband only killed his wife because there was a power play at work between the ghostly couple. :/
@@sigmacademy the husband was a scumbag way before buying the haunted house. Forging his recommendation letter, stealing his brothers paintings and pretending they were his etc.
I actually kind of liked this one. I agree that it wasn’t a strict horror movie, but I kind of liked that? It kind of mixed genres and delivered on interesting themes.
I really liked it. I can't watch horror or really scary films because they give me night terrors. I was able to watch this with no issue. It is more of a story telling movie. I really like that ghosts are hinted about while the family goes on with their lives, and that ghosts can't necessarily do things but influence. Even though I wouldn't categorize this as horror, it has better story telling than a lot of scary/suspenseful movies imo. There's a lot going on at one time and in the background, and a lot of "suggests" things without having to show it.
I completely agree with all of your guys comments. I enjoyed the movie too. Sometimes I'll switch the play back speed on a movie to go faster because its snores ville. But this one kept me intrigued. I thought the writing was well done. I love when the story tells us that the husband took credit for his cousins artwork. I was like "O.m.g he did not!!!" lol
I completely agree. It’s more of a thriller movie. It’s the family drama that brought the real life “horror” and the ghosts were more of an element of aid and influence. It was the people story line that was the focus of the film.
I loved this one the hidden darkness of domestic violence The evil of those think they inherently believed they are owed everything for nothing I believe George killed his cousin Henry because he wanted everything he had like his talent he is bitter that he can’t live off his parent’s anymore he shows irritation and possessive behavior when Cat shows connections with anyone else ever their own daughter He is a self obsessed man child
I liked this movie, it didn’t end with a happy ending for the character which I was sad about. I was hoping she’d get out. He still got caught but still, at least Ella occupied her body while she was being hacked to death. She didn’t feel any pain. But she couldn’t do too much since she was being held back as well by her evil husband.
Tbh if my guy started speeding down a highway trying to scare me not stopping regardless of how often I tell him to, it’s over right then and there. If he can’t hear the words “stop” and “no” in my distress, it’s not gonna work between us
Entirely possible, but with due respect, you sound like the kind of person who 1. Would not marry a grandiose narcissist and 2. Said narcissist would sense that he could not dominate and control you to such an extent and would not be attracted to you.
even before then, he made comments about Justine scarfing down cake, knowing that Catherine has an ED. Thats when I knew he was an abusive controlling mf.
@@Goofycommentfinder abuse can be subtle. If he knows that she has an ED and makes comments about how much another woman eats to either make his wife self conscious or inspire competition between two women, he's doing that with an intent to illicit a response. You may not see it but as someone who has experienced and research abuse, that was a red flag in the context of their relationship.
Sooo, a different take on the Amityville Horror, then. A guy named George kills his wife with an axe because of a ghost, yeah, it’s the Amityville Horror 🤣
My thoughts exactly. As I was... dredging through this, I said "This is such a 'great value' Amityville Horror". Then realized that's giving it too much credit. At least Walmart puts the core ingredients into their stuff.
23:22 “theres no way to connect the dots” so autopsy’s just magically dont exist now? Even in the 80s you could clearly when tell a body has been sitting there all night🧍🏾♀️
@@rae9450. There's a conversation between the sheriff and the wife where she says "they said it's possible she was dead longer, right?" They normally do that stuff with liver temperature but considering she was gutted, it might be hard to tell. The internal body temperature wouldn't cool at a predictable rate because it's ... Open With that said... The drugs in her shake can, the smashed phone in the kitchen, no sign she fought back or even reacted to being chopped, the fact Cole was there most of the morning/afternoon (when would the 'burglary' have occured?), him leaving his classes early unexpectedly (explains motive - he caught her leaving), his fingerprints on the axe despite him having a hired hand to chop wood, the packed bags in the car, the separate checking account, the little girl possibly remembering that they were planning to leave, the drag marks in the yard, the bruises on her back and arms from being thrown around. There is literally so much evidence and he couldn't have hidden it all. Of course, everything above is circumstancial but with the two witnesses (I think Willis would come forward) you create a plethora of motive, opportunity is established by him leaving class early, and means via the murder weapon with his prints. A good defense attorney would suggest Eddie as thebkiller. The affair (motive), how his hands were on the murder weapon at one point (means), imply he was possibly involved with Willis too, etc (motive). Say Eddie had opportunity because of Cole babysitting, and sprinkle in a little of his troubled past. Imply he equated Cath to his mother and that's why he killed her in the same place his mom died. That would likely be enough reasonable doubt for an acquittal. Luckily the husband is facing trial with an omnipotent judge now
I actually took the time to watch this movie and the younger brother/babysitter could have given the police the letter that George left him and that would have been enough to hold him on suspicion of murder. A blood test would have shown wife had sedatives in her system - a Rx that was filled the day before (he called the police) by George.
_Oooohhhhhh! Someone's got a Creator-Crush!_ If I'm being completely honest...i don't blame you one bit, lol Like, _'Get in line, Lady, this'ere's MAH MAN!!_ lol 😄😄😄 Seriously though.... *Step off, I seent 'im 1st!* 😁
I don't think this movie should be seen as a horror. I think it's a spiritual/supernatural drama, and I loved it. I think it's about sisterhood, and just like in real life, sisterhood can't stop evil doings, but it can support you through it.
Same!! After awhile I was like wait.. if he killed 2 people in one night (only 1 eventually) then he HAD to have killed his cousin. Everything is lies!
I have a friend who's not married and she dealt with some crazy ass dude so it's not about being married it's about being careful who you deal with in general
I actually loved the movie. The philosophical themes and concepts really resonate with the way I see life and reminds me of reiki. And the whole thing about domestic violence was portrayed accurate and realistically. I think we are too used to monsters, demons and stuff that we don't understand anymore that the living, us HUMANS, are FAR SCARIER than ANY monster could ever be. The whole domestic violence thing IS scary, because it's REAL and it HAPPENS, and not long ago people would not care or not bat an eye to it! Of course I love demon movies as well, I like to keep my horizons broadened and open, hence why I think that when watching this movie one should keep an open mind and take it for what it is in essence rather that what we may have led to want or believe it to be. I think the movie is rather deep, and quite enjoyable. Justine is the MVP here lol. I hope some of y'all were able to enjoy it as I have. :)
I don’t think this review did the movie justice. I honestly thought this movie would be a waste of time but seeing the cast I thought I’d give it a try. The writers did a great job explaining the theology of Swedenborg and working his philosophy into the plot. George is also a well-written sociopath with the way he subtly controls his wife, love-bombs her, exerts his control over her “out of concern”. And having someone like Foyd affirm Cath’s beliefs that there’s a spirit present in her house actually made me cry a little. She has such a good support system from the community, which can drive a sociopath (like George) crazy because the stronger the victim’s relationships with others the less power he has over her. The characters drive the plot forward and it’s incredibly well done. It’s now on my spooky October movie list.
Just because it's labeled a horror doesn't mean they were trying to approach the film with jumpscares. Sounds like this was more of a drama/thriller with a supernatural element. Haven't watched the movie, but everything seems well thought out. I like it.
I JUST finished watching this and came to find out about the ending; this movie was actually phenomenal minus the ending, which is really unfortunate, because then you get reviewers shitting on the entire movie when in fact it was beautifully done. The movie really seemed to follow in the footsteps of other more supernatural dramas such as Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor, where you're forced to (or maybe not so much 'forced' if you're a little stubborn and ignorant) remember that ghosts were once living, breathing, feeling people with all their own stories and sadness. Anyway -- I actually recommend this movie, just don't get stoked about the ending because it is... strange.
So, I can agree with elements of your review, however I honestly enjoyed every beat of this movie, I never felt that it lagged for any moment of its run time. Now, my personal opinion, I think that George fed her eating disorder and continued to shame her about it because it allowed him another element of control. I think that Amanda Seyfried’s character has one of the best character arch’s that I have seen in a long long. Well done movie and well done review.
I love this movie. I don't think it was supposed to be horror per SE, i thing the "horror" lended to the plot. As a domestic violence survivor, i can really say thing movie was... absolutely captivating for me. I loved the movie. And i think it speaks to the bond between women who go through it. That guy. He really messed with me.
My favorite thing about your channel is I can't watch most horror movies without getting really freaked out an anxious. This tells me all the important parts without any of that thanks!
The ghosts in this movie were worthless. What’s the point of having ghost friends if they aren’t going to save you from being murdered from your husband.
The throwing up the food was a body image issue, the child was to illustrate her being a mom, and the move with him to the house was all to illustrate she was sacrificing for him and he didn't deserve any of it. Alternatively, and I believe this is the way the filmmaker intended it - was this was all the things that the man used to keep her a prisoner (as seen in the scene where she goes to an all female art group, and the guy is seen as hungry afterwards - why didn't he just make himself a sandwich, like any guy in real life would have?) The entire movie has an anti-male feel to it, not like other movies that illustrated similar cheating husbands or murderous spouses which always showed only the baddie in the story as being someone who is doing wrong. This movie went out of its way to portray most men as bad, to give support to a popular myth. :/
@@sigmacademy you’re just whining. Literally every other male in this film is portrayed as a good person. Floyd, the cop, the two boys that tend to the house, Dr Warden, etc. The only bad men are the narcissists from that family: the husband and his father obviously. You only see what you *want* to see
Eating disorders often arise as a coping mechanism or means of control, I think it was supposed to show how powerless she felt in the marriage so she was turning to maladaptive coping mechanisms to cope & regain some control
@@erin_the_extra2329 I dunno. You could just as easily argue that giving her body issues was another way for him to control her. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but when threads like these have such a vaguely defined connection to the overall picture, they may as well have not included them at all. Too many subplots could be easily stripped from the movie without a single thing being lost. No joke, you wouldn’t even need a rewrite. Just edit the scenes out and a new viewer would be none the wiser. This is not a cohesive film.
Am I the only person who actually liked this film? I mean, the ending was a little - eh. But otherwise, i felt it was well done and entertaining. I really enjoyed the process of finding out how much of a douchebag this seemingly nice guy actually was- with each twist and turn.
I was just about to suggest this for your next Ending Explained because we just watched it this weekend! I quite enjoyed it. It felt really long but really good. As I'm watching this ending explained, I'm realizing that there isn't one developed female character that I didn't like in this movie, and I loved that. I never really thought that Amanda Seyfried was a great actor but she did really well in this!
Awesome story! I love it in ghost stories where the ghosts are simply humans who have passed on and are benevolent towards the living-it just takes a while to figure out they're not harmful
Definitely not the movie I thought, but I really enjoyed it. The husband is one of the worst character ever and I was so glad that there was justice at the end.
I've been waiting for you to cover this film. This sounded completely like another film made years ago and thought I was tripping while reading the synopsis
I cannot determine whether he was fully aware of what would happen at the end of that boat ride and if he was headed into it willfully. He didn't let go of the tiller. It was forced out of his hand.
Would love to see you do an Ending Explained for ‘the Number 23’ with Jim Carrey It was a movie I personally enjoyed and it’s pretty trippy Great video as always :)
I just watched it for the 5th time I enjoy psychological thrillers as well! my favorite number is 23 my birthday has 23 in it I'm obsessed. I like Jim Carrey.
This movie is more of a softer 'Stepfather' vs 'What Lies Beneath'. It's a bit slow, but I enjoyed it and it has its moments like that unexpected axe scene. Amanda certainly knows how to marry the psychos, having done the same thing recently in 'You Should Have Left.'
I loved this movie so much! But I love everything with Amanda.. and I really enjoyed the ghosts not being the most important part of the movie, kind of like crimson peak.
I think the movie isn't even about fearing death which is why Catherine dying doesn't seem so devastating to me. Movie seemed more like it's about the connections and energies about how woven life is, in and after death. Justine's weaving skill might be a symbolism for that. And in the end justice is always served, may that be in or after life.
In the reviewers house, or in the film? I'd suggest checking out Benedetta (2021). It's kinda controversial, because it mixes religion (a nun proclaiming to have a connection with Jesus) with a love story with another nun, and based on the trailer - it wants to walk a fine line between playing on the controversy and being progressive. That's a very risky proposition, because unless you can walk it carefully, it can be seen as highly insulting, by any number of people and groups. :/
@@sigmacademy a nun in a relationship with a nun is purely controversial and not progressive. If they want it "progressive", they shouldn't have set them as nuns, meaning the production crew of that movie are just being uselessly woke.
I remember liking the themes and how the movie subverted the genre, but the ending was just so unsatisfying for me...like how the first ghost wife isn't free even in death her husband still harasses her. At first I thought the twist was gonna be that the ghost lady was the evil one and her ghost husband was trying to keep her away. Also they introduced aspects like having a child at a young age, and developing an eating disorder without really doing anything with it. It's a shame because I thought that could have been more interesting, but I suppose maybe the point was that (like in real life) things aren't always tied up neatly into a thematic bow at the end. The main character dies, and although not all the things that happened played into her character arc, they still happened.
what was even the point of the whole scene of the mother kissing the younger neighbour guy?? it served nothing? and those 2 brothers themselves felt like a useless plot, they knew about it and he didn't at all try to protect her lmao. plsu every one knew about the history & they all did nothing! sigh
Haha ”don’t marry a douchebag” sounds like a much more accurate title than this. I really hoped that Ella would protect her to get out so I was so bummed when she died in such a gruesome way! Then the husband swims into the gates of hell or something and disappears? Hmm. The ending left me both speachless and confused 🤷🏼♀️ It was so sad and beautiful in a way when Ella entered Kat’s body in her death so she wouldn’t feel any pain.
I enjoyed the movie, it was nice to see something good on Netflix. The beginning could have been different, once the movie gets back to the beginning point it was kinda boring. The family drama was my favorite part, it gave more story than just a ghost doing ghost stuff. The ghost aspect was the most lacking part.
The other night I went downstairs & they were watching this movie. It was when he killed her with the axe, so I was like ok I’m in. It was like 2 AM, but I guess I had a wild hair up my ass that night, because I went & watched the whole thing in my room. I really liked it. I have really bad ADD so I don’t watch a lot of movies since I can’t sit through them, but I sat through the whole 2 hours without getting up once. That’s how I can tell if a movie was really good or not, or at least good in my opinion. Did people not like this movie?
There was a mixed response to this one. Mainly because of its message that all men would hide abuse (which you can see in only a single man in the entire film trying to expose it getting murdered). Which's is largely untrue. But the filmmaker has is an "activist" filmmaker, and just like some documentarians, have an angle they want to push, facts be damned. What you have to ask yourself, however, is why having a grown woman getting it on with a boy is okay?
@@sigmacademy. I got the impression he was older, he just lived with his uncle still. I'm not sure how old the character is, but the actor who plays him is 23
I liked it and was surprised to read the reviews. I do agree it added some confusing supernatural elements when the main plot was really more drama/character driven. I might be blinded by my love for Amanda Seyfried. I also appreciated the message because although of course all men are not evil, men are more likely to kill and many female murder victims are killed by their spouse. This creates a shared experience the story tapped into. Lacrimosa, a requiem and an unfinished piece that reads "Lacrimosa, rises from the ashes to be judged. Therefore spare him o God. Grant them eternal rest." Someday You'll be Sorry by Louie Armstrong, waves pulling people back home, the tapestry of fate, Gemini - 'twins' uniting in power. The imagery in this movie is strangely well thought out for how disjointed some of the elements are.
I like how the whole theme was "justice for the women of this house," implying she was going to be the one to break the cycle, only to die and essentially have the ghost tell us in a voiceover "only a couple more need to suffer and be killed before we're strong enough to maybe do something." Also, the whole bulimia thing; you have the husband poison her in a way that you've established to us she's been basically preparing to prevent by purging for however long and being able to make herself vomit on command, making it seem like it's finally going to come into play/pay off...but nope.
Yeah I can’t get over all of the things that made 0 sense. How about the fact she could’ve easily left way before he came home and didn’t need to bring all of those suitcases? Just RUN you already suspected him of murdering one person and attempting to murder another, who gives a fuck about suitcases?
...I feel like he got off free. He didn't have to go to jail, or be executed, or have his future and reputation and career destroyed. He just got in a boat and sailed into a sunset...a hellish one, but just a sunset. Besides, isn't it kind of sexist to imply that it takes 3 females to overcome one douchebbag?
It took me, like, 2 weeks to watch this movie. About 6 weeks faster than usual, but only because I wanted to watch it before you made a video about it. Things Heard & Seen is good for background noise when you're cooking up some hamburgers. I don't know what's it's about, though. I'm not sure if I'm going insane or what, but does anyone else hear the music in his videos?
I felt like this one gave away that it was supernatural right from the start when she finds the ring so the end wasn't super out there for me. I did think it was focusing a lot on the catharsis of women wronged. It wasn't very scary though.
Lol I kept waiting for him to explain the ending but he just summarized the whole ass movie with his condescending little commentary speckled in. I recommend you watch Think Story’s video on this film. It’s much more insightful.
